To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR K. DoWNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Opticians Pupillary Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to tools and more particularly to opticians pupillary pliers to be used in connection with the straightening or bending of the frames of glasses to set the pupillary width, or distance between the lenses in the frames to suit the distance apart of the individuals eyes. Heretofore, opticians have been using pliers of the character aforesaid for bending the bridges of the glasses and fitting the same to the wearer, but these pliers do not perform perfect work due to the fact that they mar or scar the metal of the glasses frame.
The object of the present invention is to provide improved jaws for Opticians pliers whereby the frames of eye glasses may be easily and readily bent to the desired configuration or they may be used for fitting the glasses to the individuals nose.
With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the simple and preferred form of the invention it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited but the right is hereby reserved to any changes or alterations that may be had and come within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof or sacrificing the efliciency of the same.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of the pliers embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views the numeral 1 indicates one arm of the pliers and the numeral 2 indicates the companion arm of the pliers which are pivotally connected as at 3. The inner ends of the arms 1 and 2 are curved outwardly to form the handles 4 whereas the opposite ends of the arms are made to form the jaws 5 and 6 of the pliers which are formed integral with the arms 1 and 2 respectively. At the pivot connection between the arms, the arm 1 is provided with an enlarged apertured portion 7 through which extends the reduced portion 8 of the arm 2. The forward end of the enlarged portion 7 is inclined as at 9 upon which the inclined portions ride or travel the inclined inner walls of the enlarged portion 10 of the arm 2. The rear walls of the enlarged portion 7 are also inclined and extend parallel with the inclined walls 9 and upon which travel the inclined walls 11 of the arm 2. By providing the inclined walls as heretobefore described, the arms may be swung upon their pivots 3 for opening the jaws 5 and 6 but when closing the jaws 5 and 6 the enlarged portion 7 and 9 form a stop for limiting the closing movement of the jaws whereby when they are closed, the jaws 5 and 6 will be held in spaced relation throughout their entire length as better shown in Fig. 1.
The jaws 5 and 6 are rounded and tapered to a point at their free ends, but their adj acent faces when the jaws are closed lie parallel with each other throughout their entire length and in spaced relation.
Formed integral with the outer extremities of the jaw 5 is a platform portion 12 being semicircular in cross section, having its upper face flattened and of greater width than the jaw 5. It will also be noted from Fig. 1 of the drawings that the platform portion 12 is raised slightly higher than the upper face of the arm 5 and this platform portion 12 also rests in spaced relation with the lower face of the jaw 6 when the jaws are in their closed positions.
By preventing the jaws 5 and 6 from contacting with each other when they are closed they will be prevented from gripping the frames of the nose glasses too securely, which would tend to soar or disfigure the frame of the glasses, and the platform 12 provides a broadened gripping surface affording a better bending agent of the pliers and permits the bending and twisting of the nose pieces of the glass frames to be done in regular CllI'Xi-BS without any niches or other imperfect wor Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described comprising a pair of pivoted arms, a jaw formed integral with each arm and each being rounded throughout their entire lengths, a platform formed integral with one of said jaws and having its upper face terminating above the upper face of the aw to which it is formed and means for limiting the closing movement of said jaws whereby the upper face of the platform will be held in spaced relation with the adjacent jaw.
2. An opticians pliers comprising a pair of pivoted arms, a jaw formed integral with the outer end of each arm and tapering toward at point, said jaws each being substantially semicircular in cross section, means for limiting the closing of said jaws whereby when the jaws are closed they will lie parallel with each other and in spaced relation, a platform formed integral with one of said jaws having substantially a semicircular configuration in cross section and being of greater width than the jaws, the upper face of said platform being slightly higher than the upper face of the jaw to which it is connected and the upper face of the platform adapted to be retained in spaced relation with the adjacent jaw when the jaws are in closed position.
