Be it known that I, ROBERT CORNELY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Paris, France, have invented a Improvement in Sewingwhich is fully set forth in the specification.
invention relates to sewing, hemstitching, embroidering and like machines working with several needles and has for its object to enable these machines to produce seams or embroideries of, different widths.
In the drawings the invention has been shown in combination with machine but as explained in the course of the present specification, the invention can just as well be used in combination with any kind of multiple needle sewing or embroidering machine.
Hemstitch seams are produced in the well known manner by the cooperation of two periodically spreading needles with a piercer which pierces the material.
The width of the hemstitch seam or em broidery depends not only on the amplitude of the oscillations of the needles, but also on the distance at which the needles perform their oscillations from each other, this latter distance will in the present description be called for more simplicityv the distance between the two inner rows of stitches.
In order to permit one and the same machine to produce seams of different widths, it is therefore necessary to regulate not only the amplitude of the oscillations of the needles, but also the distance between the two inner rows of stitches.
In some of the machines known heretofore this latter regulating of the distance between the two Machines, following The present inner rows of stitches was obtained by regulating devices located either on a lever which causes the spreading of the S. PcNo. 988,050) or between said lever and the needle spreading device according to U. S. P. No. 1,090,136, while on the contrary in the present invention both regulations are obtained by the ad justment of One and the same le er which actuates the lateral displacements of the needles by which a far simpler and more reliable regulation is obtained.
The drawings represent by way of example only a hemstitching machine in which the lateral'displacements of the needles are a hemstitchingstance caused by any one of the'knownmeans such as for instance as shownand described in United States Patents N 0. 988,050 and 1,090,136, but the invention may be used in combination with any other needle spreadlng devices.

.The regulating of the amplitude of the oscillations of the needles is also obtained by the means shown and described in the above cited Letters Patent by means of the displacement of bolt or 8 of levers 7 and 10.
But in the lating or adjusting the distance between the two inner rows of stitches is obtained inthe following manner: The position of pivot 11 upon which the lever 10 oscillates has been rendered ad.- justable and for this purpose it is for 'informed eccentrically with regard to its rear part 12 (Fig. 2) which can be turned within its bracket.

The contrary \x'll take place when according to Fig. 7 shaft 11 is turned upward. This adjustment can be obtained with the greatest precision by providing s with a sector 17 which bears divisions 18 and a slot 19 throu h which engages a screw 20 which is to be tightened after the adjustment has been made.
It is therefore clear that both adjustments, the one of the amplitude of the oscillations of the needles and the one of the distance between the two ,inner rows of stitches are obtained directly by the adjustments of the one and same lever 10 without making use of any other regulating device located upon said lever or between said lever and the needle spreading device.
Although the example represented in the drawings shows the invention in combination with a hemstitch sewing machineonly, it' is evident that the same invention can be used just as well in combination with a hemstitch embroidering machine.
When variations in the width of the seam are to be performed, certain of these machines, when for instance working with rotating shuttles, hooks or like, require that the positions of spend exactly with the positions of the needles for a correct formation of the seams or embroideries.
This regulating of the positions of the shuttles, hooks or like in conformity with the positions of the needles is in the present invention also obtained by the one and same above described lever 10 on account of its swinging upon in its position and this is obtained in the following manner:
At the other end of lever 10 is pivoted at 21 a rod 22 which by means of pivot 24 oscillates a double armed lever 23 which oscillates at 25 upon bracket 26 and thus transmits a to and fro motion to rods 27 and 28 but in opposite directions to each other, so that when rod 27 moves to the right, rod 28 moves to the left and vice -versa. These two rods 27 and 28 are pivoted at 31 and 32 to the shuttle or hook holder brackets 29 and which are independent haft 12 said shuttles or like COTTGP a pivot which is adjustable port, the movement of, which of each other and are connected slidably to the table plate 33 of the machine in any suitable manner such for instance as shown at Figs. 8 and 9.
It is therefore clear that by means of this arrangement the shuttles, follow automatically all. ments of the needles.
The shuttles, hooks be actuated by any of the known means in sewing machines, such as for instance from shaft 36 by means of cog wheels 37, 38, '39 and 10 but in this case cog wheels 37 and 38 must also be slidable upon shaft 36 so that they will follow the displacements of brackets 29 and 30 and for this purpose said brackets 29 and 30 are provided each with a fork 4:1 and 42 which engages a groove of wheels 37 and 38, while shaft 36 is also provided with a groove into which engage corresponding keys on wheels 37 and 38 which can thus follow the displacements of brackets 29 and 30 while they are rotated by shaft 36.
It is therefore clear that for regulating the machine a determined width of seam it is sufficient to adjust the pivots 9 and 11 of lever 10 so that simultaneously and automatically hooks or like are regulated not only into the right positions corresponding with the distance between the two inner rows of stitches, but follow also the oscillations of the needles, so that in all positions of needles the formation of the seams will take place correctly.
in the example shown in the up and down motion of the. needle-bars 43 and M is actuated by any one of the means used in sewing machines, such as for instance by a crank pin of main shaft 1 which by means of a pitman 45 transmits an up and down movement to bar 4:6 at the lower end of which are pivoted at 17 and 48 the needle bars 13 and 4A, while the take-up for the needle threads is moved by cam 19.
The piercer which works between the needles may be actuated by cam 50 of main shaft 1 as shown and described in Letters Patent No. 1,090,136.
What I claim is:
1. In a sewing machine, the combination of vertically reciprocating needle bars, needle separating and needle oscillating means including a lever having a crank pin support, the movement of which support effects simultaneous adjustment of the separating and oscillating means to produce-seams of different widths.
