specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 1?, 1917..
Application filed July 12, 1am. Serial in. l08,966.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, Gnome F. Pioxnrr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borou h of Brooklyn, in the county and State 0% New York, have invented a new and Improved Shaft for Paper-Rolls, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description;
v This invention relates to supports for paper rolls and has particular reference to means for making a quick, easy, and effective gripping connection between the .roll of paper, or its equivalent, and the supporting shaft.
Among the objects, therefore, of this invention Is to provide a air of cones for cooperation with the sha t, said cones being movable freely inwardly fromthe ends of the shaft into enga ement with the roll of paper, and each of t e cones being provided with a dog or pawl cooperating with a t to prevent accidental outward movement thereof.
a Another objwt of the invention is to provide for at least one of said cones, an improved means for projecting it forcibly into the adjacent end of the roll to ,set up the desired amount of'frictional grip.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein,
still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section indicating my improvement applied to a roll of paper, the intermediate portions thereof being broken away; and
Fi 2 is a verticaltransverse the me 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The roll of paper is indicated at 10 and as usual. has an open center 10' through which the shaft 11 is ada jected. The shaft is provi ed on one side with a lo itudinal groove or keyway 12,
section on and along t e opposite side or any other convenient portion, the shaft is provided wlth. a series of teeth 13 at each end the teeth being'inclined toward the midle of theshaft from both ends.
At one-end of the shaft is shown a head vided at its out er end ted to be pro 1 1 having a-cane 15 extending toward the other end oftie shaft and adapted to proect into the opening of the roll. This head is adapted to be shoved into or toward the .roll as faras convenient by direct operation and 'will there be locked from outward movement by means of a dog 16 having teeth en aging one or more of the teeth 13 of the a t, the dog being projected into such engageme. it automatically b means of a spring 17 carried by the bee and prowith a finger-piece 18 for releasing it when desired.
For the other end of the shaft, is provided another lead 19 havin a cone 20 1'0- jectabie into the other end 0 the roll. he outer end of tie head 19 consists of an extension 21 in tle nature of a sleeve fitted to the shaft and provided with an external screw thread 22, preferably of left 'hand character. Bei ween the threaded portion and the cone 2b is a reduced zone 23. The cone members 15 and 20 are held from rotation around the shaft by means of keys 24 and 25 of any :uitable character projecting into the keyway 12.
26 indicates LII abutment member fitted slidably upon the shaft adjacent the outer end of the extersion 21 of the head last described. The abutment carries a dog 16, spring operated in a manner described in connection with the head 14, adapting the abutmentmemb er to be forced directly toward the roll, but preventing movement thereof in the other direction. The abutment carries a flan e or collar 27 at its inner end, and just within this collar the face of the abutment is provided with a ball race 28.
' 29 indicates a iand wheel secured to a hub 30, the main portion of which is threaded tocooperate dire ctly with the threaded portion 22 of the e: :tension. The outer end of the hub is provided with a circumferential groove 31 into which screws 32, or their equivalent, project from the collar 27 of the abutment, and at the end of the hub is. ro-' or screws 32. The length of the hub is eubstantially equal to that of the threaded extension 21 and the smooth zone 28, and when the. parts are assembled, .the hub is turned around the head so as to bring the inner end thereofclose to the cone or with the outer ends of the head and extension lying substantially in the same plane. One or more set screws 35 are projected through the mner end of the hub into easy 006 ration with the smooth zone portion 23 of e head. These set screws limit the outward movement of the hub with respect to the head extension. v
A series of dowel pins 86 are secured in the head extension 21 parallel to the axis of the shaftvand projecting into corresponding sockets 37 forms in-the 'abutment member 26 and serve to prevent relative rotation of the abutment member. -'These dowel. pins do not revent, however, the movement of the he 19 forwardly away from the abutment member.
This portion of the invention just described will be' forced directly into contact with the end of the roll-of paper similarly to the setting of the head 14, and then to tighten the heads inthe ends of the roll, the
operator will turn the hand wheel and hub toward the right, causing thereby the cones to approach each other forcibly, the head.19 being moved directly by the threads of the extension, the abutment member being stationary with respect to the shaft, and the other cone bein drawn into the roll by virtue of the reaction of the shaft and the abutment member. The cones obviously may be of any desired length or inclination, and the threaded portion 22 of the head extension will be long enough to effect the desired tightening lg a single direct operation. To remove the is very sim 1e and. consists essentially of turning the and wheel, first, to the left to relieve the pressure upon the ends of the roll and then by releasing one or the other of the dogs, 16, the adjacent head may sllhipfied directly from the-shaft and then the with the other head-attached may. be
the shaft if desired.
aft from the roll, the operation slipped freely in the opposite direction from the roll, or both heads mayflae removed from I claim:
\' I 1. The combination with a shaft for paper rolls or the like, a lead secured to one end head having a conical inner 65 of the shaft,
end slidably fi d upon the other end of the shaft and adapted to be moved by hand directly into contact with the roll, the latter head being provided with an extension hav ing a threaded exterior surface, a hand wheel having an internally threaded hub cooperating with said threaded surface, an'
abutment member slidable longitudinally of;
the shaft freely in one direction, means to control the sliding movement of the abutment member in the other direction fromthe Y shaft, means connecting the abutment member and wheel hub to prevent endwise separation, but permitting relative rotation of the hand wheel, and means to prevent rotation of the slidable head.
2. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a shaft having a head secured at one end thereof, of a head slidable along the other end of the shaft, said head 76 having at its outer end an extension havin a threaded ortion and -a smooth reduce ortion, a hu fitted upon said extension and aving an internally threaded portion cooperating with the threaded portion of the ex- 80 tension and having means projecting. inwardly from the other portion of the hub into contact with the reduced smooth portion of the extension, the hub serving to force the head in'one direction until limited by said inwa'rdl projecting means, an abutment slidably tted u on the shaft, means to connect the hub wit the abutment member for free rotation but preventing endwise displacement of the hub, and means extend- 00 ing between the head extension and the abutment member preventing relative rotation of these parts but permitting endwise movement of one with respect to the other.
