PLOW.
Application filed Beceinber 9, 1916.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, FRED SIMrsoN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Lone Grove, in the county of Carter and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful llow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows, one of its objects being to provide a plow which can be readily adjusted relative to its beam for use as a hillside plow and as a middle buster plow.
A still further object is to provide improved means for locking the plow in any one of its positions.
Another object is to provide a structure of this character which is simple, durable and efficient in 'construction and the beam of which can be readily unlocked and shifted so as to bring it to a desired position relative to the moldboards.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of thel invention.
ln the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :d
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the structure, a portion of the beam and standard being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view.
Fig. 3 is an elevation illustrating that side of the structure opposite to the side shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a top plan View.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 Fig. 1.
Referring to the gures by characters of reference 1 designates a substantially triangular plow share, the diverging portions 2 of which are connected by a landside 3, there being a bracing portion 4 connecting the middle portion of the landside to the apex portion of the plow share. A plow point 5 is pivotally secured to the apex portion of the share and can be of any form desired. Moldboards 6 extend upwardly from the share and meet along a line 7 inclined up- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

wardly and backwardly from the apex of the plow share.
Secured to or formed integral with the plow share is a standard 8 having a circular head 9 at its upper end. A connecting bolt 10 is extended axially through and from the center of the standard 8 and also through a beam 11, this beam being provided with a wear strip 12 upon the bottom face thereof and one end of which bears against the front end of the beam and is secured thereto as shown at 13, while its other end terminates in an eye 111 depending from the lower portion of the beam adjacent the rear end thereof. This wear strip rests directly on the head 9 and retaining brackets 15 are secured to the sides of the beam and engage opposed portions of the head 9 so as to hold the beam against lateral tilting relative to the head. That portion of the wear strip 12 forming the eye 14 is extended forwardly to form a retaining bracket 1G which engages the rear portion of the head 9 as shown in Fig. 1.
Formed within thehead 9 at diametrically opposed points are openings or recesses 17 adapted to receive locking pins 18 which are pivotally connected to a lever 19 fulcrumed at 2O upon a bracket 21 upstanding from the rear portion of the beam 11. This lever has a handle portion 22 at the back end thereof and said lever is adapted to work upon a guide pin T23 pivotally connected to the beam and on which is arranged a spring 24E which bears upwardly against the lever. This spring exerts a constanty pressure against lever 22 so that the pins 1S are thus held normally pressed into the sockets 17 or else onto the upper face of the head 9.
A bolt 25 is extended transversely through the eye 14 and is used for securing to the beam 11 the lower forward ends of the handles 26. These handles are connected to the sides of the beam by braces 27 and may be suitably connected to each other as by means of cross strips 28.
Extending downwardly from a restraining bracket 29 which is secured to the beam 1 and engages the front por-tion of the head 9, are spaced ears 30 between which is mounted a latch 31. This latch has a longitudinal slot 32 for the reception of a holding pin 3?) and the latch is adapted to be shifted longitudinally toward the standard 8 so as to enter a recess 34 formed in the stan dard and in line with the ridge 7.
A clevis of suitable form is connected to the front end of the beam 11, as indicated at 35.
Secured to the landside of the plow is 'a colter blade 86 having a curved cutting edge projecting beyond the edge of the moldboard and plow share, this colter having an arm 37 detachably bolted to the landside, there being also other fastening bolts 38 extending through the colter. A colter such as described is adapted to be placed at each end of the landside or if preferred, it can be used in connection with a colter 39 attached to the other end of the landside and which colter has a 'curved cutting edge and is adapted to be detachably bolted to the standard 8 and to the landside. If preferred, two of these eolters 39 can be used, one at each end of the landside.
When the device is used as a hillside plow it is drawn along the ground as ordinarily and when the end of the furrow is reached, the lever 19 is depressed at the handle end thereof so as to withdraw the pins 18 from the recesses 17. .Beam 11 can then be swung about the bolt 10 as a pivot and after it has moved through 180 degrees, pins 18 will spring back into the recesses, whereupon the plow can be drawn back to its first position without, however, turning the plow shareand moldboards.
When the device is to be used as a middle buster plow, the beam is swung to a position so that it will extend forwardly from above the point 5, whereupon the latch 3l can be pushed baclrwardly into the recess 34.
The colter blade 36 is designed for ordinary plow use, whereas where heavy work is to be done by the plow, the colter 39 is preferably employed. As before stated, however, both colters can be attached at the same time to the landside for alternate use.
What is claimed is 1. In a plow, the combination with a V- shaped plow share and a landside connecting the outer ends of the share, of a standard projecting from the landside, a head thereon, a beam mounted for horizontal turning movement upon the head, and separate means carried by the beam and cooperating with the head and standard respectively for holding the beam in line with the landside or at right angles thereto respectively.
2. A plow including a V-shaped share, a landside connecting the ends of the share, a standard, a head on the standard, a beam resting on. the head, said standard having a recess therein, means carried by the beam for engaging the head at diametricallf,l opposed points to hold the beam against tilting relative to the head, a locking lever, locking pins carried thereby and extending through the beam, there being recesses in the head for the reception of the pins when the beam is extended in the same direction as the landside, a latch slidably mounted `on the beam, there being a recess in the standard for the reception of the latch when the beam is extended at right angles from the landside.
3. In a plow, the combination with a V- shaped plow share, moldboards extending therefrom and meeting to form a ridge, and a landside connecting the ends of the share, of a standard, a circular head thereon, a beam, a wear strip extending longitudinally under the beam and bearing on the head, means carried by the beam and engaging the head for holding the beam against tilting relative to the head, a bracket integral with said wear strip and engaging said head, separate means for locking the beam against rotation relative to the head and with the beam extending in the same direction as or at right angles to the landside, and handles extending from the beam.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED SIMPSON.
