TINTTED %iiATlEf% PAENT CULLEN L. LYTTON, OF WITHERS, NORTH CAROLINA.
CU-SI-IIONING DEVICE FOR COMBING-NIPPERS.
Application filed August 17, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1 CULLEN L. LYTTON, a. citizen of the United States, residing at \Vithers, in the county of Gaston and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cushioning Devices for CombingNippers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention. is to provide a simple and durable device for cushioning the closing action of the nipper in cotton combing machines; and it consists of certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing annexed:
Figure l is a side elevation, and
Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved device.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, a designates the usual nipper rod which when pushed upwardly closes the usual nipper knife against the usual cushion plate, the nipper knife and nipper plate not being shown in my drawing. A machine of this type is now being put on the market by The Whitin Machine Works of llfhitinsville, Massachusetts, and one machine of this general type is illustrated in U. S. patent to Owen, No. 1,157,083, patented October 19, 1915. The lower end of this rod is threaded 7 to enable it to be adjustably clamped, by
means of nuts 6 to a rocker ring 0, pivotally mounted on the ends of screws d threaded from opposite directions into the horizontal arm of an angle lever c. This angle lever is pivotally connected by means of a pivot f, to one end of an arm 9 affixed to the usual rocking nipper shaft it, which is journaled in the frame in the usual manner. Carried by the arm 9, in a position substantially at right angles to the nipper rod a, is a tube 2'. The end of this tube nearest the rod or is closed by the upwardly extending arm of the angle lever e, and the opposite end of this tube is closed by a cap 7'. Inclosed in whose opposite ends are connected to bolts Z, one of which extends out through a hole in cap and the other of which extends out through a hole in lever c. On the outer threaded end of 4 each of these bolts Z is a nut m by means of Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Apr. 17, 1%17. Serial No. 115,457.
which the desired tension is maintained on the spring is.
In machines of this class, when the shaft 72. is rocked to pull down the nipper rod a, the nipper knife is opened 6. moved away from the nipper plate) and when the rod (4 is pushed upwardly upon the opposite rocking of the shaft 71., the nipper knife is closed against the nipper plate. It is usual to cushion this closing action by a coiled spring arrangement and I therefore make no broad claim to this cushioning idea. With my device, it will be observed that when the rod a is pushed upwardly, the spring will be distended and thus cushion the closing action of the nipper knife in the usual manner. The advantage of my device is that the spring is inclosed on all sides, so that it will be impossible for lint to collect upon the coils of the spring and thus interfere with the action thereof. By thus keeping the lint from between the coils of the spring,.it will be observed that the tension of the spring will at all times be uniform, so that frequent adjustment of the tension spring will be rendered unnecessary and, obviously, the spring will have a greater length of life.
I claim 1. In a device of the class set forth, a rocking shaft, an arm carried thereby and provided with a tube, an angle lever pivoted to one end of the tube and having one of its arms adapted to close the adjacent end of the tube, a nipper rod connected to the other arm of this angle lever, a closure means at the opposite end of the tube, a coiled spring inclosed within the tube, and tensioning means for the spring connected to the arm of the angle lever which closes one end of the tube.
2. In a device of the class set forth, a tube carried by the rocking nipper shaft, a spring inclose'd therein, means for closing the ends of the tube, a nipper rod, and means connecting the same to one end of said spring.
3. In a device of the class set forth, a nipper shaft, a nipper rod and means connecting the shaft to the rod for operating the same, said means embodying a tube arsaid closure to the upstanding end of the 10 ranged above the shaft and fastened thereto lever, for the purpose set forth.
so as to rock therewith, an angle lever piv- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my otally connected to the tube and having an signature in the presence of two witnesses. upstanding arm adapted to close the adja GULLEN L'LYTTON cent end of the tube, and another arm connected to the nipper rod, a closure for the Witnesses: opposite end of the tube, and a coil spring J. A. HUNTER,
inclosed Witlnn said tube and connecting Jon S. WRAY.
