One object of niv invention is to improve the construction of press rolls.v particularly those used in paper machines, so that the roll `will not deflect at the center under pressure.
further object -of the invention is to construct the roll so that it will be supported on its shaft some distance from each end in order to keep the face of the roll in au absolutelvY straight: line so that the pressure will be the saine from one end of the roll to the other.
A' still further object of the invention is to provide for a slight movement where the' shaft supports the shell.

Referring to the drawings, l is the shaft on which the shell Q of the press roll is mounted. T his shaft has trunnions 3 at each end. The shaft, in the present instanee..is greater in diameter at the center than at the trunnions and has a tapered section 5 at each end connecting with a section (3 of even diameter. Keyed to each of these sections 6 is a ring 7 which must turn with the shaft. The periphery of each of these rings 7 is slightly rounded. as cli-Pari)7 shown in the drawings, and the shell has a coinlnu'atively neat lit at this point on the rings. Fitting within each end of the shell is a ring 8,.
which is keyed to the shell and connecting this ring and the ring 7 is a flexible coupling in the forni of a shell 9, which encircles the shaft and fits snugly on the portion 6 of the shaft and within the ring` 8 secured to the shell. Any suitable fastening* are provided so that the flexible couplings will turn with the shaft and with the ring 7 and will turn the shell Q. i

The caps also prevent dust and dirt from entering the space-between the roll and the shaft. The roll consists of two sections, in the present instance, a cast body portion 10 and a face section 11 of rubber ornietal, which is.

The usual practice is to run two of these rolls'together under heavy pressure on the trunnions, and it will be noticed that the shaft 1 supports the roll at a distance froin each end so that the shaft ina)Y deflect considerably without affecting thc face of the roll, the objectbeing to keep the face of the roll in`an absolutely straight line so that 'the pressure will be the saine from one end of the roll to the other.
It will be noticed that the shell has a comparatively loose fit on the ring 7 mounted on the shaft-and is driven through the long coupling sleeves 9 so that the shaft mayY he considerably deflected without affecting the face of the roll, but this driving connection is substantial and will resist the strains to which the roll is subjected.

The combination in a press roll, of a 4tubular shell; a shaft considerably less in 10 diameter than the interior of the shell and having two rings secured thereto some diftance from the end of the shell,4 the periphery of each ring being rounded and thel bearing portion of the shell being flat; tubular couplings connecting the lshell near its outer end With the rings on the shaft so that theshell will turn with the shaft, but will have a slight movement thereon.
