FENCE-POST.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Lewis H. Fnnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residin at Huron, in the county of Beadle and tate of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fence posts of that type formed of sheet metal, one of the objects being to provide improved means for attaching fencing thereto.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

In said drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a post having the present improvements combined therewith, a portion of the post being removed and a portion of a fencing being shown connected to the post.

Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the upper portion of the post, said section being taken on the line AB Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a section on line C'D Fig. 1, said section being on an enlarged scale.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a post made up of sheet metal such as galvanized iron bent to triangular form, one edge of the sheet of metal being bent to form a lip 2 lapping the opposed edge of the metal, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, thus to prevent the post from spreading. The bottom end of the post has its faces pressed inwardly, as at 3, thus to provide a reduced end portion which can be driven into the ground readily, the faces of said depressed portion co'dperating to form a triangular wedge which will easily enter the ground so that the dirt will not pack in the post and tend to split it while it is being driven.

Out from one face of the post are ears 4 of any desired contour, each ear having an opening 5 therein designed to receive a locking rod or Wire 6. If a fence fabric is to be secured to the post the same is laid against the apertured face of the post and the locking wire 6 is inserted downwardly through the ears so that the strands of the fencing will extend between the wire 6 and 21 the post. The lower end of the wire 6 is bent around the lower strand of the fencing and then twisted as shown at 7 in Fig. 1, while the upper end of the wire can be twisted after passing through the upper most ear 4, thus to prevent the wire 6 from becoming displaced. Furthermore, the car i can be bent upwardly and inwardly, thus to position the locking wire 6 against the fencing so as to hold said fencing securely between the wire and the post.

Where the barb wire such as shown at 8 is to be connected to the post, one of the cars is extended between the strands, as shown in Fig. 1 after which the wire 6 is 7 passed through the opening in the ear. Where the barb wire is arranged in engagement with the uppermost ear, the top loop 9 of the wire 6 can be extended around the barb wire as shown. 8

It will be apparent that the post herein described can be cheaply manufactured and will constitute efficient means for supporting fencing of different kinds. It is further more advantageous because it can be forced 3 readily into the ground without being spread by the dirt packing therein.

What is claimed is 2* A fence post formed of sheet metal and having flat faces, longitudinal series of out- 9 struck apertured ears on one of said faces, all of the apertures being in alinement, and a locking member extending along a straight line through the apertures in all of the ears, each end of the locking member being 9 looped about the adjacent end ear and constituting means for engaging the upper and lower strands respectively of a fence fabric extending between the locking member and post, the terminals of the member being wrapped about the member and extended toward each other between the end cars.
