To all whom it may camera:
Be it known that I, LYNDON C. PALMER,
a citizen of the United State residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the 7 following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in but more particularly to that type of box usually made of paper, and used for holding finely divided material, such as powder.
One object of the invention is to provide a .box in which the contents may be effectively carried, and at the same time substantially prevented from sifting out, as happens in devices of different construction. 1 U
A further object is to provide a construction whereby theabove objects will be attained, and in which the component parts of the device may be readily assembled in preliminary relationship, after whichwhen the box'has been filled they may be unite permanently by a simple operation.
Uther objects of the invention will be in part obvious andin part pointed out hereinafter.
, The invention accordinglv consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified. in the construction hereina after set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the fol lowing claimsl- In the accompanying drawings, forming ,part of this specification, and wherein similar' reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views;
Figure 1 represents the lid of a box embodying one form of the invention;
Fig. 2 represents the base thereof;
Fig. 3 represents the cover or container adapted to be fitted within the base;
' Fig.- 4. is a cross sectional view of the assembled structure; and
Figs. 5 and 6 represent modifications. Referring now more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a box head and 2 a box fla secured t the head, these two elements forming a box, orbase, and being preferably made of relatively stifi material such as cardboard, strawboard, etc-., as is usual in paper boxes. This box is to be assembled with a protective lid 3, made of slmilar material, this lid being adapted to retain the contents of the box. There Wlll be a joint, as at 4, between the lid and box, and when the box contains finely divlded material, as, for instance, face powder, some of it may drift through this joint, resulting' in loss of powder and soiling of surrounding objects. One of the main obects of the present invention is to avoid or mlnimize this loss, and to retain the powder in that part of the box provided therefor. To this end a box element, or
cover, is provided which overlies the contents of the box between the lid and the base. The overlylng portion, or head, of this cover is indicated at 5, in Fig. 3, being made of an lmperforate frangible fabric, as thin paper; and at 6, in Fig. 5, where it is made of thin paper twisted'or interfolded so as to confine the powder therebeneath, but WhlCh may be unfolded to permit access to the powder. The form illustrated in Fig. 3
is preferred, and the further description will be dlrected more particularly thereto, reference being made to the similar parts of other forms, where the context requires. The cover is mounted on the box preferably nside thereof, as shown, and sealing or packlng material is interposed between the box and cover where these parts are joined.
"In the preferred embodiment this sealing mater1al 1s disposed between the box and cover, and preferably between the flanges of such elements. In Fig. 3 the packing or sealing material is indicated at 7 where it is -formed by an extended portion of the material of the frangible head 5, whereas in Fig. 5, it is-a continuation of the twisted or folded head 6, and indicated at 8. In each form illustrated the sealing material is adhesively secured to the box, preferably to the flange thereof, thereby practically preventing the powder drifting out at the joint. The head 5 is composed of any suitable frangible material; that is, material which may be readily ruptured or perforated or torn, as by pressing thereon with a finger of the hand.
In order to brace the sealing fabric so as to restrain it peeling away from the box flange, and to assist in holding this material adjacentthe joint between it and the box, a brace member is employed. In Fig. 5, this member is indicated at 9, lying on a the folded fabric around the inside of the box, whereas in Fig. 3 the brace member comprises a multiple-ply flange of the cover, the plies of which are indicated at 10 and 11, the material of the head of the cover extending down between these plies, and at' the lower part being folded so as to extend to position between the lower edge of the ply 10 and the head 1, underlying said ply and thence extending upwardly, as at 7, the outer ply 10 thus extending into the fold of the sealing fabric. The plies 10 and 11 are made of relatively stifl' material, like that of the box, and serve to stiffen .and shape the flexible paper of which the head of the cover is made, so that the'downwardly extending side portions of the thin cover paper are held in upright position. Thus in the preferred embodiment shown in section in Fig. 4, the flange of the cover comprises a relatively stiff member lying within and fitting the flange of the box, and
extending upwardly above the upper edge" 12 of the flange of the box, so as to form a neck over which fit the sides of the lid.
In preferred practical operation, the base,
. cover and lid are assembled, as shown in Fig. 4, with the sealing fabric not fasi tened to the base, and they are shipped to the dispenser in this condition. In order that the frangible head 5 may not be accidentally punctured or broken, the covers may, at this time, be provided with a reinforcing head 13, underlying the head 5, and fitting inside of the cover flange. The dispenserremoves the lid, the cover, and the reinforcing head 13,'fills the receptacle with powder, applies adhesive to the outside of tight fit will hold the lower portion of the outer ply l0 and to the sealing material at 7, and replaces the cover. and the lid, omitting the head' l3.
The adhesive soon sets, the cover being thus fastened to the box in a manner to practically-prevent the escape of powder out of the containing chamber until the box is operatedin the manner intended by the user.
'In boxes wherein the cover flange fits tightly in the box flange, the adhesive may be dispensed with, as the sealingmaterial will restrain the escape of powder, and the the parts in. assembled position. 1
, InFig. 6, is illustrated a further modification wherein sealing or packin material, as raw cotton, felt 14 etc. is lnserted between the cover flange and the box flange.
, The lid 3 cooperates with the base to close the box, and in. the present embodiment the flange 15 of the lid surrounds the cover flange and makes a joint 4:, with the upper edge of the box flange 2.
Thus by the above described construction are accomplished, among others, the objects hereinbefore mentioned.
As many changes could be made in the above .construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of t is invention could be made without departin from the scope thereof, it is intended that a l matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to coverall of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the S00 e of the invention which, as a matter 0 language,-might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described myinvention what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a box, a frangible head having a stiff flange fitting the flange of the box, and a removable reinforcing head beneath and supporting said frangible head.
2. In a device of the character described,
I in'combination, a box, a frangible head havto prevent the escape of material from the box where so. connected, and a brace lying on the fold of said fabric.
4. In a" device of the character described, in combination, a box, a cover for the material in the box, a folded sealing fabric conncting the box and cover and adapted to prevent the escape of material from the box where so connected, and a cover stifl'enin member extending into the fold of sai fabric.
5. In a device of the character described,
in combination, a box, an im erforate frangible cover for the material in the box, and a foldable sealing fabric connecting the box and cover inside the box and adapted to prevent the escape of material from the box where connected to the box.
6. In a device of the character described, in combination, a box, a cover for the material in the box, a folded sealing fabric connecting the box and cover inside the box and adapted to prevent the escape of material from the box where so connected, and a brace lying on the fold of said fabric inside the box.
7. In a device of the character described, in combination, a box comprising a head and a flange, a cover comprlsing a fran ble head and a relatively stiff flange, t e

In a device of the character described, in combination, a box comprising a head and a flange, a cover comprising a frangible head and a relatively stiff multiple-ply flange, the flange of said cover fitting inside the flange of said box, said frangible material extending between the plies of said cover flange and to position between the edge of one of said plies and the head of said'box.
9. In a device of the character described, in combination, a box comprising a head and a flange, a cover comprising a frangible head and a relatively stifl multiple-ply flange, the flange of said cover fitting inside the flange of said box, said frangible material extending between the plies of said cover flange around the edge of one of said plies and between said flanges.
10. In a device of the character described,
in combination, a box comprising a head and a flange, a cover comprising a frangible head and a relatively stiff multiple-plyflange, the flange of said cover fitting inside the flange of said box,-said frangible material extending between the plies of said cover flange around the edge of one of said plies and between said flanges, and adhesively secured to said box flange.
11. In a device of the character described, a box element comprising, in combination, a two-ply flange, and a frangible head, the material of the head extending between the plies of the flange, and underlying the edge of one of said plies.
12. In a device of the character described, in combination, a box comprising a head and aflange, a cover comprising a frangible head and a relatively stifi' multiple-ply flange, the flange of said cover fitting inside the flange of said box, said frangible material extending between the plies of said cover flange and to position between the edge of one of said plies and the head of said box, and a protective lid overlying said frangible head and having sides adapted to surround said cover flange.
