RAIL-SUPPORTING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, EDWIN G. BUSSE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Supporting- Devices, of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention has for its object to provide a rail supporting device or tie plate for supporting adjoining rails (such, for example, as a main line rail and a guard rail) of a railway track. One of the main objects of the present invention is to provide a device which will enable adjoining rail sections of different sizes to be readily and firmly connected together and supported. The present invention is particularly ap x-licablo for supporting the mainline rail and adjacent guard rail. Heretofore .it has been customary to use the same size or weight of rail both for the guard and main rails. An objection to such construction is that in order to hold the rails in proper juxtaposition, it is necessary to cut away more or less of the inner flange of the guard rai.l,an operation involving considerable time, trouble and expense. By my present invention 1 am enabled to employ a guard rail materially smaller than the main line rail and to so support and connect it with respect to the main line rail that the cutting of the inner flange of the guard rail is avoided. My invention also presents other features of advantage all of which will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

The lower portion of the filler block C has its bottom reduced, as at 0, to admit the inner base flange b of the guard rail B, a shoulder c of the filler block prefer-- ably abutting against the edge of the base flange 6. As shown, a fishplate or washer E is arranged on the outside of the web of the guard rail B and against this washer bears the head of the through bolt D. Beneath the bases of the rails A and B extends the body portion of my improved plate F, the upper surface of which is formed with a fiat portion to bear against the base of the main rail A and with raised part F on which rests the base of the rail B. This raised part F is preferably formed by stamping or bumping up the plate F by suitable dies. The raised or arched portion F is of less width than the body of the plate adjacent thereto, thus leaving the flat portions of the plate to bear against the tie and prevent the spreading or flattening of the arched portion F. As shown, the plate F projects beyond the main and guard rails and at one end this plate F is provided. with a shoulder adapted to engage the edge of the outer base flange a of the main rail A. This shoulder f is formed by stamping or bumping up metal from the plate F. The opposite end of the plate F is folded over upon itself, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and this folded over portion is formed with a raised part to engage the guard rail B and resist the side thrust thereof. Preferably, the raised part of the plate F is stamped upward about its central portion to form a rail brace F the inner and upper end of which extends to and bears beneath the head of the guard rail B. At each side of this brace por tion F the metal is bent inwardly and upwardly, as shown in Fig. 1; that is tosay, the metal at each side of the raised part F preferably extends for a short distance parallel with and rests directly upon the end portion of the plate F and then bends upwardly to form the shoulders f adapted to engage the edge of the outer base flange 6' of the guard rail B and is bent also inwardly, as at 7, to overlap the base flange b of the guard rail. Suitable spike holes are formed at the opposite ends of the plate F, the spike holes adjacent the raised part F 2 passing through the reverted portions of the plate, as clearly shown in the drawing.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A' brace plate for railway rails formed of a'single piece of metal having a lower portion adapted to extend beneath and sup' port one rail and having adjacent thereto ahollow arched portion rising from said plate andof less width than said plate, the crown of said arched portion forming a raised seat for a supplemental raila'nd being materially narrower'than the base of said supplemental rail, said brac'e'plate having at the outer side of said arched portion a-raised brace adapted to extend over the base flange and engage the upper part of said supplemental rail.
2. A brace plate for railway rails formed of a single plate of metal and comprising a base having a struck up portion forming a raised'seat for a supplemental rail and having adjacent thereto a flat portion forming a seatfor the main rail, said metal plate being folded inwardly upon itself and bent upwardly at the end adjacent said raised seat to forma brace adapted to engage the base flange and upper portion of the supplemental rail.

A brace plate for railway rails formed of a single plate of metal and comprising a base having a struck up portion formin'ga raised seat for a supplemental rail and'hav- 'ing'adjacent'thereto a flat portion forming a seat for the main rail, said metal plate beingfolded inwardly upon itself and bent upwardly at the end adjacent said raised seat to form a brace adapted to engage the base flange and upper portion of the supplemental rail and said plate being provided outside said main rail seat'with an integral struck up part adapted to engage the base flange of the main rail.
4:. The combination with a main and a supplemental rail of a brace plate having a lower portion adapted to extend beneath and support the main rail and having adjacent'thereto a raised portion of less width than the plate from which it is raised and adapted to extend beneath and support the base of the supplemental rail, said brace plate having also at the outer side of said raised portion a brace adapted to engage the base flange and upper portion of the supplemental r'ail, a-filler block extending between the main andsupplemental rails, and a bolt passing through said main and supplemental rails'and through said flller block and serving to unite said parts.
