JOHN D. JOHNSON, OF AURORA, NEBRASKA.
PACKAGE-TIE.
Application filed December 4, 1915.
provide an improved buckle on one end of the tie strap whereby the strap may be very tightly bound about the package of envelops without liability of the buckle tearing or otherwise mutilating the paper.
It is another and more specific object of the invention to provide a buckle for the above purpose which is of exceedingly simple construction, strong and durable in actual use, and capable of manufacture at small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved package tie applied to a package of envelops;
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the buckle;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view through the buckle.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates a strap or tape which may be of any desired material and either flat or of cylindrical form. The buckle, indicated at 6, is formed from a single metal plate having a slot 7 in one end thereof through which one end of the strap or rope .is passed and secured. Adjacent to this slot 7, a transverse slot 8 is formed in the metal plate opening upon one of the longitudinaledges of said I plate, as shown. A second transverse slot 9,
extending in parallel relation to the slot 8, is also formed in the plate and opens upon the relatively opposite longitudinal edge of the plate. From this slot 9, the end portion of the plate is angular-1y bent and obliquely Specification of Letters Patent.

disposed, as indicated at 10, and the end edge of this oblique portion of the plate is toothed or serrated, as at 11.
From an examination of Fig. 1 of the drawing, the manner of using the device will be readily understood. The metal buckle is placed upon the center of the package of envelops and the strap or cord connected thereto is then passed around the package and first forced into the transverse slot 8 in the buckle plate. The strap is then brought over the intermediate portion of the plate and inserted. downwardly through the open ended slot 9 and under the oblique end portion of the buckle plate. The strap is then tightly pulled and the teeth 11 on the end edge of the buckle plate bite into the strap and hold the same securely in its adjusted position so that the strap cannot loosen. It is to be particularly noted that, when the strap is properly applied as shown, no portion of the metal buckle plate contacts with the paper envelop to which it is opposed so that all liability of tearing or mutilating the envelop in transportation is obviated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of my invention will be clearly and fully understood. It is apparent that the buckles may be constructed in various sizes for use for various purposes.
While I have shown and described the preferred form and construction of my improved buckle, it will be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is A tie buckle consisting of a fiat metal plate provided with a slot in one end to which one end of a tie strap is adapted to be permanently connected, said plate having additional spaced parallel slots respectively opening upon the opposite longitudinal edges of said plate at one of their ends, for the insertion of the strap therein in a lateral direction, from opposite sides of the plate, ferent angular planes with respect to the said plate at the inner end of one of said tie strap. 1 slots being angularlybent to provide an In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my obliquely disposed transverse end portion signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
5 having teeth or serrations on its outer edge JOHN D. JOHNSON.
for biting engagement with the terminal of Witnesses: the strap, the body of the buckle plate and CHARLES W. WENTZ, said end portion extending in relatively dif- CLARA LEEPER.
I flopies ot'this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
