To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LYNN P. MGEACH- RON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoosick Falls, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New Yorlnliave invented certain new and useful improvements 1n rfool-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tool holders and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device for holding tools in proper position when the same are being sharpened.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device by which the tool may be accurately ground and held in proper position during the sharpening probess.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a device having suitable dials arranged thereon by means of which the user may readily determine the proper position in which the tool is to be held.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of clamp for holding the tool supporting head in variousad] usted positions.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which z Figure l is an end view of a tool holder constructed in accordance with this invention.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates one of the supporting legs of the device provided at its upper end with an enlargement 2 having an aperture 3 formed therein. The opposite supporting leg is designated by the numeral 4t and is provided nearits upper end with an enlargement 5 having an aperture 6 arranged therein. The lower ends of the legs are tapered as at 7 to form slides upon which the device is slidable. The apertures 3 and 6 are preferably circular to receive the trunnions of the rotatable shaft which will be more fully hereinafter described. Forined near the eXtreme upper end of each of the enlargements 2 and 5 are suitable rectangular apertures 8 for the reception of the ends of the connecting bar which will be more fully hereinafter .described. Attached to thefaces of the enlargements 2 and 1 are suitable blocks 9 provided with rectangular apertures which aline with the apertures 8 and the connecting bar designated by the numeral 10 is provided with squared portions 11 at opposite ends which terminate in threaded portions 12 and project through the openings in the seen upon reference to the drawings. rfhreaded on to the portions 12 of the bar are suitable nuts .13 by means of which the whole is held in assembled position.
The shaft for supporting the tool head consists of two sections 14C and 15 having their adjacent ends threaded while the opposite ends are formed with hubs 16 and 17 respectively which in turn terminate-in trunnions 18 and 19 respectively which are received inthe openings 3 and 6. The trunnion 18 has attached to its outer end a disk 20 which is formedv withv a plurality of graduations 21 adjacent its periphery and it will be understood that when the shaft is rotated the disk will also rotate. A suitable mark 22 is formed on the outer side of the enlargement 2 of the supporting leg 1 and cooperates with the graduations 21 in indicating the proper position at which the head is to be set. J
In order to hold the head at various angular degrees, a suitable band 23 surrounds the hub 16 and is provided with suitable eX- tensions which are apertured to receive the bolts 24 which in turn extend through an opening formed in the lug 25 formed on the inner face of the leg 1 as will be clearly seen upon reference to Fig. 5. A suitable thumb nut 26 is threaded on said bolt and is adapted to adjust the pressure of the band on the hub. It will thus-be seen that as the thumb nut is 'tightened the band will be drawn tighter on the hub thus locking the shaft against rotation. The opposite shaft y blocks 9 and the openings 8 as will be clearly f section provided with a hub 17 is held against rotation by a band 27 which is preferably tensioned Vso as 'to only retard the movements ofthe shaft and this band, like thatpreviously described is controlled by means of a thumb nut 28 on a bolt 29 which extends through the lug 30 formed on the inner face of the leg 4.

, provided at one end with a flange 32 having 32 are radial openings 42 and 43. These openings are arranged at diametrica-lly opposite points and lare adapted to receive the screws by means 'of which the jaw members arie-retained in place. j The jaw comprises a i jaw member 44 'and a jaw 'member 45 andthe jaw member 44 comprises a semi-circular plate'provided with recesses 4G formed in its flfat-fac'e-whi'ch recesses are adapted to slidably receive the pins 47 carried by the jaw member 45. The aw member 45 like the jaw member 44 comprises a semi-'circular plate and the adjacent faces of these jaw members kare each formed with V-shaped notches 48 which when the jaw members are assembled form a rectangular lopening through which the tool projects. A suitable screw 43 is threaded into the jaw member 44 and projects through the 'opening 42 in the flange 32 while a screw '50 is threaded into the jaw member 45 and projects through the opening 43 in the flange '32. It will be 'Seen 'tha-'t the screw -50 will when turned cause the jaw members lto 'open orV close according to the direction-of rotation yof the screw. j i 1 v It willy be apparent from the foregoing that inuse the tool is inserted-in the opening formed by the notches 48between the jaw members 44 and 45 andthe screw 50 is then tightened thus causing the jaw members vto move into clamping position whereupon the device is vswungto the proper'position and the set screw 40 is then released so that the tool may be turned after which the Ascrew is tightened and it will be seen that the device may be Aused in the mann'er illustrated in rigs. 1, 2 and 3.k
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment Vof this invention",l it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangementV vof parts as willfall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:-
l.V A device of the class described comprising a pair of legs, a connecting bar connecting the upper ends of said legs to provide a U-shaped frame, a shaft journaled to said legs, a sleeve secured centrally of said shaft, a tool socket rotatably supported in said sleeve, a dial carried by said tool socket and positioned exteriorly of said sleeve to indicate the various positions of the tools carried by the tool socket with relation to said sleeve.
2. A'device of the class described comprising a pai'r of supporting legs, a connecting bar connecting the upper ends of said legs to provide a U-shaped frame, lugs extending inwardly from the legs near their upper ends, a shaft rotatably mounted between the legs, bands surrounding the shaft near opposite ends, bolts extending through the lugs and through the bands to tighten the lsame on the shaft and thereby hold said shaft in various Vadjusted positions and a tool holder mounted centrally of the shaft for supporting tools to be sharpened.

A device of the class described comprising a pair of legsl a connecting bar connecting the upper ends of the legs to provide a U-sh'aped frame, the said legs being apertured slightly below the connecting bar, a shaft journal'ed in the apertures, a tool holder centrally of the shaft, means to h'old the shaftA in various adjusted positions and 'a dial at the end of the shaft to indicate the various degrees of adjustment.
4. A device of the class described comprising a pair of legs, a connecting bar connecting the upper end of the legs to provide a U-shaped frame, the said legs being apertured slightly below the connecting bar, a shaft journa'l'e'd in the apertures, a ytool holder centrally of the shaft, means to hold the shaft in various adjusted positions and a dialv at the end of the shaft to indicate the various degrees of adjustment, means to adjust the tool holder on the shaft and a dial on the tool holder to indicate the various positions of the `tool within the holder.

A device of the 'class described comprising a pair of legs, a connecting bar connecting the upper ends of 'said legs, a shaft journaled between the legs, a tool holder centrally of the shaft, a dial on one end of the shaft 'to indicate various positions of the tool holder, hubs formed on the 'shaft near opposite ends, lugs extending inwardly from the legs immediately beneatl'i the hubs, bands surrounding the hubs and bolts extending through the bands 'and through the lugs to adjust the tensionof the bands on the hubs and thereby hold the tool holder in various adjusted positions.
6. In a device of the class described, a
tool holder comprising a sleeve, a flange at one end of the sleeve, jaws adapted to fit within the flange, guide pins carried by one of the jaws and extending through the opposite jaw, the flange being provided with a pair of diametrically opposed apertures, a screw carried by one of the jaws, a reduced extension on the end of the screw adapted to fit in one of the apertures, a shoulder formed by the reduced extension to limit the movement of the screw and a screw extending through the opposite aperture to move the coperating jaw toward or away from the first mentioned jaw in order to clamp a tool in place.
7 In a device of the class described, a tool holder comprising a sleeve, a flange at one end of the sleeve, jaws adapted to fit within the flange, guide pins carried by one of the jaws and extending through the opposite jaw, the fiange being provided with a pair of diametrically opposed apertures, a screw carried by one of the jaws, a reduced eXtension on the end of the screw adapted to t in one of the apertures, a shoulder formed by the reduced extension to limit the movement of the screw and a screw extending through the opposite aperture to move the coperating jaw'toward or away from the first mentioned jaw in order to clamp a tool in place, and means to rotatably support the sleeve in various adjusted positions.
