IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 122,123, dated December 26, 1871.
To all whom lt may concern.-
Be it known that I, J osErH M. LoEWENsTEIN, of the city ofNew Orleans, in the State of Louisiana, have invented certain Improvements in Disinfecting and Deodorizing Closets for Houses; and do hereby declare that the fcllowin g description, with the accompanying plate of drawing, is a full specification of the same.
My invention relates to improvement in disinfecting and deodorizing closets which are so constructed that the fecal matter deposited preferably in an upper story of a house may be disinfected and deodorized at the instant of such deposit a nd then conducted through a conduit or pipe to the basement of the building and into a suitable air-tight receptacle provided for said purpose, and which latter is designed for its re- It consists of the various parts and details represented in the accom pauyin g plate of drawing forming a part of this speci'cation, in which- Y Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sections. In the drawing referred to, letter A designates the hopper, in which is put the disinfecting material, constructed high and wide in front and declining towards a point in the rear thereof, in shape similar to a pear cut in half longitudinally, in order to cause the disinfecting material to fall towards the opening a., and from thence into the trough, or conducting-slide, to prevent the waste of the disinfecting and deodorizing compound. Said hopper closes air-tight upon the seat. B designates a slide or trough, which is linked to the seat at a point derent from that of the hopper, whereby it is caused to oscillate by the motion of the latter, thus closing and opening the aperture a provided in the base of the hopper. Said slide is provided with the openings c c for the admission and egress of the compound which falls upon the apron D. The bar or projection H is rigidly attached longitudinally to the bottom of the slide or trough B, and operates the perforated apron I, pivoted to the frame K at a suitable distance beneath the opening in the privy-seat and the opening c in the slide or trough. The rake C extends into the hopper or lid A, and is hinged at ein the rear of the hopper, the elevation and depression of which causes the rake to move back and forth so as to agitate and prevent clogging of the compound.
The conduit or pipe E is 'funnel-shaped at the top, and is located immediately beneath the aperture of the closet-seat, and the funnel M at the mouth thereof, which is the narrowest part of the conduit, is linked by the catch f to the pipe below, and from the mouth of the funnel to the bottom of the conduit the pipe continues to flare or enlarge in order toV prevent any stoppage therein. To the conduit E is also attached the combined cover and link F, which is provided with the flange G projecting into the cask L. The said link at its apex being smaller than the lower end of the pipe or conduit it is only necessary to elevate the same when it is desired to remove the cask L with its contents.
