To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HUGO C. WELL, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Internal-Combustion Engine, of which the following is a full, clear, andl exact description.
My invention relates to engines, and itv has for its object to provide one of the internal combustion type which has a piston with a rotatable valve member with a port which is adapted to receive the combustible mixturev through a port in the side of the cylinder, the rotatable valve member also having ports which are adapted to register with ports in the piston to permit of a quick circulation of air in the cylinder to cool the cylinder and clear it of all products of combustion.
Other objects of the invention are to direct air to one of the ports in the piston, to lead the air. from the other port in the piston and out of the cylinder, and to rotatethe valve member in the piston.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specifica tion, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
Certain features of this invention are disclosed in applicants co-pending application having Serial No. 778,075.

In the cylinder 5' there is disposed a piston 14, having ports 15 and 16, which are commanded by the valve member 17, this valve member 17 having ports 18, with which the ports 15 and 16 are adapt'- ed to communicate. Integral with the piston 14, 'there are two conduit members .19 and 20, the conduit member 19 `communicating with the port 16, and the conduit member 20 communicating with the port 15. The lower terminal 21 of the conduit member 19 is dis` posed outwardly, affording communication between the scavenger ports 8 andthe conduit 19. The tube or conduit 1 3.4 is disposedy in and telescopes withthe'c'onduit 20. The

' the conduit 13 and the port 7. The cylinder is cooled by this circulation of air therethrough.
As will be seen by referring to the drawings the ports will be in this position after the explosion, and with the movement of the piston 14 in the direction of the cylinder ead the ports 15 and 16 will be closed by the valve member 17, when the piston is at the end of the return stroke. As the valve member 17 rotates on the piston 14 the port 26fwill be moved into position to receive the combustible mixture from the port 6 which combustible mixture is compressed by the movement of the piston toward the cylinder head when itis exploded in the usual manner. While I have shown my invention as applied to a four-cycle engine it will be understood that it may be used on. other engines.
. In the operation of the engine the ratchet tooth 31 moves the ratchet disk 22 and the valve member 17 one-eighth of a revolution at every revolution of the main shaft so that with every second revolution of the main shaft one of the ports 26 will be disposed opposite the port 6. In this way the cylinder is charged with the combustible mixture with every second revolution of the main shaft and the combustible mixture is compressed and fired as is customary in 4-cycle engines. When the pistonis moveddownl again the main shaft has made a complete revolutlon and the valve member 17 has made one-eighth of a revolution which hasl moved two of the. ports 18'into communication with the ports 15 and 16 to clean the cylinder of the products of combustion.
Having thus described my invention I' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
' 1. In an engine, a cylinder having a port a conduit disposed in and longitudinally oi y the cylinder, and communicating with the port, a piston having a port and a conduit' cylinder through one of the orts for carrying out of the other port t e products of combustion.
3. In an engine a cylinder, a piston for moving in the cylinder and being provided with two scavenger ports, a valve member mounted to rotate on the piston for commanding the ports, and means for directing a supply of cleansing fluid into the cylinder through one of the ports, and carrying out of the other port the products of combustion'.
4. 6. In an engine, a cylinder, a piston for reciprocating in the cylinder and provided with a scavenger port, a valve member mounted to rotate on the piston for commanding the scavenger port, a ratchet member mounted to rotate with the valve member, a piston rod connected with the piston and having a sleeve, a ratchet tooth disposed for moving longitudinally in the sleeve and adapted to engage the ratchet member, and

7. In an engine, a cylinder having a port, a piston with a port and a valveA member mounted to move on the piston for com.
manding the piston port and having a rim wlth a port with which the cylinder port is adapted to communicate.
8. In an engine, a cylinder having two:
ports, a conduit disposed in and longitudinally of the cylinder, and vcommunicating with one of the ports, a piston havingqtwo ports and two conduits communicating with the piston ports, one of the last-mentioned conduits having a sliding engagement withthe firstmentioned conduit, and the other of the second-mentioned conduits having a lateral port for communicating with one of the ports in the cylinder, whenthe piston in a predetermined position relatively to the cylinder, a valve member for commandingthe ports in the piston, and means for operating the valve member.
9. In an engine, a cylinder having two ports, a conduit disposed in and longitudinally of the cylinder, and4 communicating with one of the ports, a piston .havingtwo Y ports and two conduits communicatingwith g the piston ports, one of the last-mentionedv conduits having a sliding engagement with the first-mentioned conduit, and the other of the second-mentioned conduits having a lateral port for communicating with one of the ports in the cylinder, a valve member for'V commanding the ports in the piston, and means for operating the valve member. a

In an engine, a cylinder having two ports, a conduit disposed in and longitu-v dinally of the cylinder, and communicating with one of the ports, a pistonhaving two ports and two conduits communicating with the piston ports, one of the last-mentioned conduits having a sliding engagement withv the iirst-mentoned conduit, and the other of the second-mentioned conduits having a lateral port for communicating with one of -the ports in the cylinder, when the piston is in a predetermined position relatively to the cylinder, a valve mounted to rotate-on the piston for commanding the ports in the piston, and means for rotating the valve v 11.
