RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedMar. 2'?, 1217,
Applicationled July 31, 1916. Serial N o. 112,337.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, EMIL GEMEINDER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 1238 North Tenth street, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacles and, in the present instance, is shown as embodied in a garbage receptacle. It is, of course, understood that my invention, in its useful application, is not limited .to garbage receptacles.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a receptacle whe-rein the cover may be removed and the receptacle swung to dumping position quickly and conveniently and wherein the cover of the receptacle may automatically seat itself upon the top of the receptacle when such cover is released andthe receptacle suspended from the bail.
With Vthe above and other objects in view, the 'invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling-within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing;
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a receptacle constructed in accordance with my present invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional. view therethrough.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a receptacle constructed of any suitable materialand having the lower end closed and the upper end open. Fastened to the receptacle 1 at diametrically opposite points adjacent to the upper end of the receptacle are guide strips 2 having the central portions thereof offset outwardly from the receptacle as at 3 and the olfset portions vformed with vertical slots 4, respectively.
5 designates a bail for the receptacle. The lower extremities of the limbs of the bail are equipped with inwardly extending headed studs 6 that work within the slots 4 and the headed ends of the studs 6 are disposed in the space between the side wall of the receptacle and the offset portions 3 of the respective strips 2. 7 designates a cover for the receptacle. In the present instance, this cover comprises a bottom section 8 having the peripheral edge thereof formed with a 'depending flange 9 adapted to enter the open end of the receptacle 1 and frictionally engage the side wall of the receptacle at the open end thereof to close the receptacle, and an upper section 10 riveted to the lower section 8 and formed at diametrically opposite points with outwardly extending lugs 11 formed with openings 12 through which the limbs of the bail 5 extend` In the present instance, the interconnecting member of the bail 5 has the central portion thereof offset upwardly as at 13 to form a handle, while fastened to the cover 7 at the center thereof is a handle 14 adapted, when raised to open position, to enter the handle 13 so that both handles may be grasped in one hand. Secured to the side wall of the receptacle adjacent to the lower end thereof and disposed at a point between.
the strips 2 is a handle 15.
The studs 6 lie at the lower endV of the slots 4 in the offset portions of the respective strips 2 and the interconnecting member of the bail rests upon the cover 7, the oiset handle 13 accommodating the handle 14. When it is desired to move the receptacle from place to place, the handle portion 13 of the bail is grasped and the studs 6 slide upwardly within the slots 4 and engage the upper ends of such slots and in the continued lifting of the bail the receptacle is elevated and may be carried about. When it is desired to remove the cover from the receptacle the handle 14 is grasped. and the cover pulled upwardly and in the upward movement of the cover the handle 14 enters the space formed by the offset handle 13 so that both handles, being disposed in juxtaposition, may be grasped in one hand. The handle 15 is now gripped by the other hand and the receptacle swung about the studs 6 on the lower extremities of the limbs of the bail to discharge thev contents of such receptacle. When the handle 15 is released the receptacle gravitates to normal position and when the handle 14 is released and the handle 13 held the cover drops onto the open end of the receptacle and the iange 9 may be forced into the receptacle to effectively close the latter.
I claim:
A receptacle having the lower end closed and the upper end open, strips fastened to the side wall of said receptacle at diametrically opposite points adjacent to the upper endI thereof and having the central portions thereof offset outwardly and formed with vertical slots respectiyely, a bail7 inwardly extending headed studs secured to the lower extremities of the limbs yof said bail, a cover for the upper end of 10 wardly centrally to form a handle, and a handle on said cover adapted to enter the space formed by the offset handle portion of said bail.
In testimony whereof I aiX my signaturev in presence of two Witnesses.
EML GEMEINDER.
