LAIDBIROOK H. FREEMAN, 0F CIlfiEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIIIGrN'OIB. TO THE GUGGENHEIM LAUNDRY MACHINERY COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF To allwkom'z'tmay concern;
Be it known that I, LADBROOK H. FREE- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing Presses, of which thefollowing is a specif O This invention relates to laundry maand waist presses.
chinery' generally and particularly to shirt More specifically the invention relates to means forv ironing .the entire shirt bosom and the portions of the yoke lying between the rear curved corners of the neck band and the folding line.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting intheyconstruction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawlngs and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the machine provided with, my invention; Fig. 2c is an enlarged detail view of the device applied to parts of the mechanism;.Fig. 3 is a top plan view of, the device showing the neck band former; Fig. is a side elevation of the device looking to the right in the direction of the line 44 of Fig. 3; .and Fig. 5 is a section upon the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
- -In carrying out the invention any preferred'form and construction of parts may be employed so long as they possess the necessary characteristics, but I have shown one form and construction-in the drawings, which is highly efiective in operation, and
in such embodimentl represents the frame provided with an ironing board 2 having formed integral therewith a yoke ironer member 3 havinga' yoke 'ironer plate 4 -mounted thereon with aportion 5 extending up above the surface of the board and back of the neck" band former to be described. The frame isalso provided with suitable brackets 6- havingsockets 7 for receiving the movable iro'mng'member to be later described. Secured to the ironing board is a neck band forming mechanism which may be of any preferred form except that it mustcomprise a main body portion 8 with. a curved front edgeand backwardly diverging sides as; well. as movable foot portions 9 which are mounted on slides adapted to operate in a diagonal direction 7 monme rnnss.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pmtentqgfl Map, 27 1191317,, Application filed July 5, 1912. Serial No, 707,887.
in and out from the main body portion 8. The mechanism for performing the movement of these foot portions does not constitute any part of the invention and it is able bed 11 supporting a movable yokeironer 12 adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with theyoke ironing plate 4 by any suitable mechanism, not shown.-
Secured to the side of this bed and on each side of the machine are suitable bearing blocks 13 which supportmovable arms 14 provided with bearing portions 15 for receiving rods 16 pivoted at their upperends to brackets '17 both firmly secured to the ironing plate 18. This ironing plate conforms to the general configuration of the ironing board and has a recess19 at the and near the brackets 17 curved toward the body of the plate to conform to the curve of the .body portion of the neck band former 8 and having diverging side edges in parallel alinement with the side portions of the body portion of the neck bandformer.
The mechanism thus far described represents the' type of machine to which the invention is applied and the description will now be confined to the mechanism which forms the subject of this invention.
One of the devices is secured to each innercorner of the ironing plate at the straight side edges of, the recess 19, and a descrlption of one will sufiice for both.
This mechanism comprises a plate member 20 secured upon the upper surface of the ironing plate in any suitable manner, and havin along the edge adjacent to the straight e ge offihe recess 19 an upwardly extending guide 21 having an undercut edge 22 and a straight ed e on the opposite side flush with the straig t edge of the ironing plate at the recess 19. Slidably mounte on this guide 21 is an ironing member 23 having a recess 24- for receiving the guide 21 and extending over and under the undercut portion 22 'so' as to be held upon the .guide. This member has a curved face 25 which conforms to the configuration of the stud and adjusts the neck band former to,
the neck band in the usual way, the forward curved portion 8 of the neck band.
former moving down the board, and the rear portions 9 moving outward to fill the neck band. The yoke ironer is-then moved in place to-iron the yoke and establish the folding line in alinement with the rear curved foot portions of the neck band former. The ironing plate is then lowered upon the work and the ironing members 23 are moved inward so that their curved faces 25 engage the outside of the neck band at the foot portions 9, the under surfaces of these members lying over the-portions of the yoke arranged between the curved rear" corners of the neck band and the foldin line. The ironing chest is then lowered upon the work so that it engages the ironing plate. At the same time the lugs 27 project inward from the side walls of the neck band recess, engage upon the tops of the pins 26 and force the corner ironin devices down upon the portions of theyoie below them. In this way the entire bosom, the side portions of the yoke, and the corners between the back corners of the neck band and the folding line are ironed throughout. In ironing shirts with the neck band formed in substantially a circular arrangement there is a foldin line established and this folding line touc es the neck band at the back, the curve of the neck band forming with this folding line angularly shaped portions which are normally left untouched by any of the ironing machines employing the U-shaped or V-shaped recess in the ironing chest. This device is designed for completely ironing the entire exposed bosom and yoke portion to the folding line.
