Description

A. A. ANDERSON.
NEEDLE THREADING THIMBLE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 10. 1915.
1,220,387. Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
ALLEN ANDERSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
NEEDLE-THREAIDING TI-IIMBLE.
Application filed February 10, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN A. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N eedle-Threading Thimbles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved means associated with a thimble for threading a needle mechanically with any number of strands of thread desired. The mechanism in this invention is so associated with the thimble that no inconvenience is caused to a person wearing the thimble upon a finger, and furthermore there is no possibility of the needle threading mechanism interfering with the work or becoming caught or tangled in the fabric.
Itis an object therefore of this invention to construct a thimble equipped with a needle threading device which is simple and practical in design and eflicient in operation.
It is also an important object of this invention to construct a thimble which, on one wall, is creased or grooved inwardly to afford recesses in which a stifl wire hook is mounted, adapted to receive a needle threaded thereon, so that after engagement of the thread in said hook the needle may be removed and mechanically drawn over the thread engaged on said hook, thus threading the needle.
It is furthermore an important object of this invention to construct a combination thimble and needle threading device wherein a needle threading mechanism is mounted in a recess provided in the thimble in a manner to permit a thread to be engaged thereon after a needle has been inserted over said mechanism, so that removal of the needle from said mechanism causes the needle to be drawn over the thread, thus threading the needle.
It is finally an object of this invention to construct a simple, compact, easily operated needle threading device which is associated with a thimble, permitting convenient application thereof for the purpose of thread- Specification of Letters Patent.
thereon into the position Patented Mar. 27, 191?. Serial No. 7,219.
ing a needle without removing the thimble from the finger.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a needle threading thimble embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof away and shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a front view similar to Fig. l, but partly broken away.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional detail of one of the walls with the needle threading mechanism mounted therein showing the needle being inserted thereon in the first operation for threading the same.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary front face view of the part of the thimble shown in Fig. 4, showing the thread being manipulated into place in the second operation of threading the needle.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4, illustrating the third operation of the device in threading the needle.
Fig. 7 is a detail 7-7 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary detail of the threading mechanism detached from the thimble.
As shown in the drawings:
The reference numeral 1, indicates as a whole a thimble provided with a lower rolled or beaded edge 2. On one side on the exterior wall of said thimble, the metal is partly broken section taken on line creased inwardly, forming one horizontal.
and one vertical groove at right angles to one another, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5, and denoted by the reference numerals 3 and 4, respectively. Mounted in the vertical groove 4, which may be termed the needle groove, and secured at its lower end, is a relatively stiff fine wire hook member 5, the hooked extremity of which terminates substantially in line with the axis of the horizontal groove 3, which may be termed the thread groove, as clearly shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6. In threading the needle, which is indicated by the reference numeral 6, the eye thereof is first inserted over the upper looped or hooked end of the member 5, as shown in Fig. 4, and moved downwardly shown in dotted lines. After the needle has been so placed upon the member 5, the thread, which is indicated by the reference numeral 7, is laid I Fig. 5.
The needle then is moved from the dotted line position shown in Fig. 4, upwardly into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 6, thus being drawn over the thread 7 after which of course the thread may be detached from the hook-member 5. In the construction illustrated in Fig. 8, I have shown the hook member 5; associated with an integral wire ring 8, which may be sprung into the beaded extremity 2, of the thimble to hold the hook member in proper position. However, it is obvious that the hook member 5, may be secured in its recess in the wall of the thimble in any suitable manner.
The operation is thought to be obvious from the description. However, it is apparent that my device is capable of many variations in form and construction without departing from the principles thereof, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
In a device of the class described, a thimble having needle and thread grooves at a right angle to one another in the outer wall thereof, and a looped needle-threading member mounted in one of said grooves below the outer surface of said thimble, said member having the extremity of its loop terminating in line with the other of said 7 grooves, thus permitting a needle to be engaged thereover and to be drawn therefrom and over a thread which has been passed through the looped extremity of said memher.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALLEN A. ANDERSON.
