FLAG-HOLDER.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
Application filed August 14, 1916. Serial No. 114,709.
To all whom it may concern:
simple and comparatively inexpensive de-' vice for attaching a flagto a movable vehicle, automobiles and the like, and it pertains more especially, among other things, to the peculiar construction of the clamping bracket. First. whereby the flag staff is inclined at an angle to its vertical support; second. to the peculiar shape of the clamping members, whereby the same is made slightly eccentric to such support. and is adapted to impinge more firmly upon supports of different diameters. and third, to the construction of one-side of the clamping members, the same being preferably made slightly conical. In other words, the diameter of the space between the two clamping members is preferably slightly greater at one end than the other, whereby-such clamping members are adapted to fit a greater variety of sizes of supports.
My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of a portion of a wind shield and flag staff in connection with my clamping device.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section, drawn on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 represents one of the clamping members removed from the other.
ing device. Attention is called to the fact that the circular clamping members 7, 7, which surround the staff 5, are inclined. at an angle to the vertical. as indicated in Fig. 1, whereby the upper end of the staff 5 is preferably inclined forwardly. The clamping members 2 and 3 are preferably slightly eccentric to the members 6. with which they are connected. and said clamping members 2 and are also preferably slightly conical. In other words. they diverge from their lower toward their upper ends, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. By this arrangement, it will be obvious that my clamping members may be connected with standards 6 of different diameters or sizes, and are adapted to fit any size according to the length of the bolt 4. The clamping members and 3 are both preferably formed of resilient metal which yields sufiiciently to permit their respective ends being brought firmly together around said stafl 5 and standards 6.
While I have described my device as being connected with the wind shield of an automobile I wish itto be understood that the same may, if desired, be used with any other moving vehicle.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In adevice of the described class, the com bination of a pair of clamping plates, each provided with a single central aperture, a clamping bolt located in said apertures, the ends of said plates being clamped together forming tubular bearings, one ofsaid bearings being conical and inclined at an angle to the other for the reception of a flag-staff, the other of said bearings being formed eccentric to its longitudinal center, and converging downwardly from its upper toward its lower end.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
SAMUEL C. VIDEY.
