Description
No. 121,985. Patented Dee.19,171.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STAMP-GUIDES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,985, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
` Beit known that I, HENRY BoLTHoFF, of Gentral Cit-y, in the county of Gilpin and Territory of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stamp-Guides, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in a new way of preventing the friction and expensive wear of stampstems upon their ordinary metal packing by interposing between the stem and guide any cheap elastic packing; by adjusting a follower to take up the wear, and by enabling them to mutually support one another, when arranged horizontally in a series by a peculiar construction, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the guide with the stem and stamp in place. Fig. 2 is a cross-section ofthe guide.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the stem. l B is the guide, with wings C VC projecting therefrom for bolting the guide to the timbers. D represents holes through the wings for the bolts. The body ofthe guide B is chambered out or made tubular for containing hemp or other elastic packing, and on its upper portion on the inside a screw-thread is cut, as seen in the drawing. E is the follower, which has a screw-thread which engages with the thread within the guide. F represents the packing, which is compressed around the stem by means of the screw-follower. Gr is a collar around the upper portion of the follower, which collar may be in any form for allowing the follower to be turned down by a wrench or otherwise. The inner portion of the follower is in the cup-form to allow of the introduction of oil or other lubricating material. The stem passes through the bottom of the chamber and through the follower loosely, so that the full bearing of the stem will be upon the packing.
When the packing is worn so that the stem has become loose, the follower is screwed down so as to compress the packing around it. New packing may be introduced from time to time, as occasion may require. By this improvement on the guides for stems of stamping-mills the stems are protected from wearing against metallic surfaces, and are, con.- sequcntly, rendered more durable than they have heretofore been.
It will be observed that one of the wings C has a projecting ear, H, and the other a cavity, I, of corresponding size and shape. This is for the purpose of having the wings fit into each other and be made self-supporting when a number of stamps are placed side by side.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination ofthe stampguide B, filled with elastic packing F, with the threaded follower E, when constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the stamp-shaft A, of the guide B, having projection H and correspending cavity I on the opposite sides of wings C C, as shown, and for the purpose specified.
HENRY BOLTHOFF.
