To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. WIE- sncnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hagerstown, in the county of Vashington, State of Maryland, and Gnonen O. SCHIMPF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Curtis Bay, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Fasteners; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention has for its object to provide means for locking flush doors within their frames and for automatically shifting them respectively into and out of said frames when the locking means is applied and released. l/Vith this general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this application and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view showing a car door locked in closed position by the improved locking means;
Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the manner in which one section of the door is automatically moved outwardly when the looking means is released;
Figs. 3 and i are vertical sections on the planes indicated by the lines 3-3 and H of Figs. 1 and 2 respectively;
Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section on the plane designated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a detail vertical section on the plane of the line 66 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 7 is an elevation of the keeper and the part of the door section to Wll10l'l it is secured; and
Fig. 8 is an edge View of the parts shown in Fig. 7.
Throughout the several views, the nu meral 1 has reference to'the side of a car having a door frame 2 in which a door is received, the outer face of said door being normally flush with the outer face of the side 1, said door being shown in the present embodiment of the invention as formed of two sections 3 and 4 although the latter could well be employed without the former. flanges 6 adapted to guide the sections 3 and 7 i on said tracks when said sections are moved forwardly out of the frame 2 and then shifted between the tracks.
A look member 7 is pivoted to the door section l near the inner edge of the latter on a horizontal axis 8, said member being preferably in the form of a disk having an operating lever 9 and a horizontal finger 10 extending rearwardly across the inner edge of said section 4, this finger cooperating with a keeper 11 inset in the inner edge of the door section 3. Keeper 11 as shown most clearly in Figs. 7 and 8 is provided in its outer corner with a notch 12 and at the inner edge of this notch a cam groove 13 is formed, said groove increasing gradually in depth from its outer to its inner end and being formed on an are described around finger 10 will travel on the cam-like bottom of the groove in question and will thus force the section 4 of the door outwardly as shown in the last named figure. Lever 9 is preferably held in its uppermost position by means of a spring detent 14.
Vertical bolts 15 are mounted slidably in bearings 16 on the upper and lower ends of the door section 4, the outer ends of said bolts having shoes 17 equipped with inclined cam faces 18 for contact with the flanges 6 to force the door section 4 into the frame when the upper and lower bolts are respectively shifted upwardly and downwardly. For so shifting the bolts in question, links 19 are pivoted thereto and are also pivotally connected with the locking member 7 on opposite sides of the axis of the latter, whereby movement of said member will simultaneously operate the shoes 17.
The lowermost link 19 is preferably provided with a pair of ears 20 to receive therebetween the lever 9 when the latter is positioned to lock the door, the usual seal 21 being then passed through said ears as indicated in Fig. 1.
For slidably supporting the door sections 3 and iany appropriate means may be employed but balls 22 are preferably mounted in socket members 23 carried by the lower ends of said sections as shown most clearly in Fig. 6.
The locking mechanism so far described vill hold only the inner edges of the door sections 3 and 6': within the frame 2 and for the purpose of preventing the outer edges of these sections from moving outwardly before the locking means is released, the vertical sides of the frame are preferably undercut as shown at in Fig. 5, the outer edges of the door sections 8 and f being beveled accordingly.
In operation, assuming that the door is looked as shown in Fig. 1, the shoes 17 will then rest behind the flanges 6 as will be clear from Fig. 3 and thus outward shift ing of the inner edge of the door section a is prevented by said shoes, the finger 10 and keeper 11 serving to prevent the inner edge of section 3 from moving in this manner, while the beveled outer edges of the sections 3 and i so contact with the undercut sides 24 of the frame 2 as to prevent outward movement of said edges.
When the door is to be opened, the seal 21 is broken and lever 9 is swung upwardly and held by the detent 14c in the position shown in Fig. 2. This operation causes the finger 10 to engage the cam bottom of groove 13 and thus forces the inner edge of the door section 4. out of the frame 2. By now exerting an outward pull on the free end of lever 9 the outer edge of the door section at will be moved forwardly from the frame and said section may then slide laterally along the tracks 5. If the door section 3 is to now be opened, it is first shifted forwardly and then moved along the tracks 5 in the opposite direction from the section 1-.
When again closing the door, the section 3 is first moved into place and the outer edge of section a is then forced into the frame. This having been done, the lever 9 is pulled down. *ardly, thus forcing the shoes 17 apart so as to bring the cam faces 18 thereof in contact with the flanges 6, said faces 110w serving to force the inner edge of section linwardly, and when said edge reaches the limit of its inward movement, the shoes 17 will be located behind the flanges 6 as indicated in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing, it will be clear that although the construction of our invention is rather simple, it will be efficient and durable and for these reasons the arrangement of parts shown and described constitutes the preferred form of the improved locking means. It is to be understood, however, that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made without sacrificing the principal advantages.
We claim:
1. In a flush door, the combination of a frame, horizontal tracks at the upper and lower ends thereof, a door mounted for sliding on said tracks and for lateral movement therefrom into said frame, upper and lower horizontally elongated shoes mounted on the upper and lower ends of said door. said shoes extending at right angles from the door and having respectively an inclined upper face and an inclined lower face extending longitudinally thereof and contacting'respectively with the lower edge of the upper track and the upper edge of the lower track, and means for forcing said upper and lower shoes respectively upwardly and downwardly to cause them to slide. laterally on the tracks to move said door into the frame.
2. In a flush door, the combination of a frame, tracks above and below said frame, a door mounted for sliding between said tracks and for lateral shifting therefrom into the frame, the upper and lower tracks having longitudinal flanges on their outer edges respectively depending and rising from said tracks, vertically disposed guides secured to the outer face of the door adjacent the upper and lower ends thereof, vertical bolts mounted slidably in said guides,
a pivotally mounted operating member carried by the door between the two guides, links pivoted to the inner ends of the bolts and extending to said operating member, said links being pivoted to said member on opposite sides of its pivot, and horizontally elongated shoes on the outer ends of the bolts having inclined faces for contact withthe edges of the track flanges for forcing.

3. In a flush door the combination with a door frame, tracks above and below said frame, and a door mounted for sliding between said tracks and for lateral shifting therefrom into the frame; of vertically moving cams carried by the upper and lower ends of the door for forcing the latter into the frame when projected, links extending toward each other from said cams, a rotary member mounted on the door and pivotally connected with the inner ends of-said links at points spaced diametrically o in from its turning point, and a relatively fixed cam cooperating with said rotary member to force the door from the frame when said member is turned to retract the first named cams.
4c. In a flush door the combination with a door frame, tracks above and below said frame, and a door mounted for sliding between said tracks and for lateral shifting therefrom into the frame, of vertically movable cams carried by-the upper and lower ends of the door for forcing the latter into the door frame when projected, links extending toward each other from said cams, a rotary member mounted on the door and pivotally connected with the inner ends of said links at points spaced diametrically opposite from its turning point, a finger projecting inwardly from said rotary member, and a cam inset in a relatively fixed part of the frame, said cam and finger cooperat- 10 ing to force the door from the frame When the aforesaid member is turned to retract the first named cams.
