Description

0. c. GESSLER.
COMPOUND TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED APR.8. 1916- 1,218,757. Patented Mar.'13,1917.
amen/to;
OTTO C. GESSLER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
COMPOUND ILOO'L.
Specification of Letters Latent.
Application filed. April 8, 1916. Serial No. 89,738.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Orro G. GnssLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compound Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to cork screws and cap pulling devices, and the object of my invention is to provide a cork screw with a head so constructed and mounted on the shank of the cork screw that in addition to the function of assisting in the operation of withdrawing; or extracting a cork from a bottle it may be used for removing seal caps from the tops of bottles.
Another object of my invention is to furnish a cork screw with a member which may be fitted on the head of the cork. screw and utilized as a hand piece to facilitate rotating the cork screw and extracting a cork from a bottle.
The above and other objects are attained by a simple, durable, inexpensive device that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the cork screw as inclosed by a tubular member, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the tubular member' utilized as a handle to facilitate the extraction of a cork from a bottle.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a cork screw having the shank 2 thereof provided with a head 3. The head 3 for the greater part of its length is cylindrical and has an extension or holder 4, set to one side of the longitudinal axis of the head and somewhat in the form of a ring or band having a small opening 5. The outer side of the holder 4, diametrically opposite thehead 3, has a prong 6, and at the juncture of the holder 4 and the head 3 there is a hook projection 7. This hook projection is in the same plane as the longitudinal axis of the opening 5 of the holder 4, but sets in a plane at right angles to that of the holder 4, relative to the longitudinal axis of the head 3. The hook projection 7 has a bill 8 thereof extending substantially in the same direction as the prong 6.
When the cork screw 1 is not in use it is housed or inclosed by a tubular member 9, said member fitting upon the head 3, and having the end thereof cut away, at one side, as at 10, to provide clearance for the hook projection 7, thus allowing the member 9 to fit well up on to the head 3 of the cork screw. The member 9 is cylindrical and of a diameter corresponding to the opening 5 of'the holder 4, whereby when the member is removed from. the cork screw, it may be snugly fitted in the opening 5 of the holder 4 to serve as a hand grip or cross head to facilitate rotating the cork screw and extracting a cork. The hook projection 7 does not interfere with the insertion of the member 9 in the opening 5 and said member may be easily positioned, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the cork screw can be rotated to anchor the same in a cork and then pulled upon to extract the cork from a bottle.
With the member 9 inclosing the cork screw 1, it still serves as a hand grip when Patented Mar. 13, 1917.
the device is used for removing a seal cap from a bottle. Such use brings the prong 6 into play as a pivot or fulcrum upon the top of the cap, while the hook projection 7 engages under the crimped edge of the cap and permits of the remainder of the device being used as a lever to pry the cap from the mouth of a bottle.
The member 9 is formed with a side projection or teat 11, intermediate the ends thereof, and this projection limits the insertion of the member in the holder 4 and correctly positions the same as a handle for facilitating rotation of the cork screw.
The device can be made of a non-corrodible metal and of such size as to be conveniently carried in a vest pocket, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the construction of the device is susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is j 1. A compound tool having a head, a holder carried thereby at one side of the longitudinal axis of said head, a prong on said holder opposite said head, a hook projection carried by said head and adapted to cooperate with said prong in the removal of the cap, and a member normally fitted on said head and having an end thereof out away to provide clearance for said hook projection.
2. A compound tool comprising a head, a holder carried thereby, a prong on said holder, a hook projection on said head fldillfil". ed to cooperate With said p'rong in removing a bottle cap, a member normally fitted on said head and adapted for insertion in said holder, and a side projection on said member for limiting the insertion of said member 10 1n said holder.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of-two witnesses.
