VACCINATIN'G-TABLE.
Specification ofLetters Patent.
Patented Mar. 6, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMEs A. DRAGOO and DICKMAN D. DRAGOO, citizens of the United States, residing at Connersville, in the county of Fayette and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vaccinating-Tables, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention has relation to veterinary appliances with special reference to vaccinating tables and the nature and objectsthereof will be apparentto those skilled in the art, in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawings, illustrating what we now believe to be the preferred embodiment, or mechanical expression of our invention, from among other forms within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims. v
However, an object of theinvention is to provide a vaccinating table upon which to support, and securely hold hogs, pigs, and other small animals for the performance thereupon of operations incidental to the practice of veterinary surgery.
Another object of the invention is to provide a table of the character describedwhich is portable, and which may be disassembled and its parts conveniently packed for transportation.
In addition to the foregoing our invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. 7
In the accompanying drawings in which similar and corresponding parts, are designated by the characters of reference through out the several views in which they appear,
Figure 1, is a view in side elevation of a vaccinating table constructed after the man-.
ner of my invention, 7
Fig. 2, is a plan view thereof,
Fig. 3, is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and .1
Fig. 4, is a similar section onthe line 4L' 1 ofFig. 1.
This invention finds its greatest degree of employment in the vaccination of hogs. In hog raising countries, especially the middle Western States, the disease known as hog cholera is widely prevalent, and occasions at times losses of considerable magnitude to breeders of these animals. It has now be come the practice to vaccinate, or inoculate the hogs with anti-toxinwhich mitigates the contagious properties of the. disease. It i is evident that if a herd of swine comprising great numbers is'to be inoculated some means must be provided for holding them conveniently, without discomfort to theoperator, and whereby they may be 'quickly placed into position and as quickly released.
We have devised an arrangement for car rying out the operations mentioned above, and which comprises a supportingelement formed-'of'a'pair of longitudinal members 1 of galvanized iron or the like, and disposed with their lower longitudinal edges in proximity but slightly spaced, and their sides diverging upwardly to form a V-shaped trough. Hinges 2 are provided for connecting together thelower'edges of the members 1 whereby said members may be folded together for packing. I
One extremity of the trough element is supported upon a member formed of a transversely extending strap iron having a V- shaped bent portion 3 the sides 4 of which are adapted to support the members 1 in Vshaped'relation,sa'id strap iron being continued at the upper edges of the members 1 iii'a'horizontal direction to form portions 5, and then downwardly as at 6 to form supporting legs. The opposite terminal of the trough shaped member is preferably dis- 7 posed at a higher elevation so as to incline said trough shaped member and to that end is supported upon a member formed of strap iron, and having-a V shaped-bend at 7 and upwardly diverging portions 8 upon which are supported the members 1 in V-shaped relation. The strap iron member just mentioned is continued downwardly and longitudinally for a distance beyond the terminal of the trough shaped member to form supporting legs 9. p l
The members 1 and theportions 1 and 8 of the strap iron support are provided with registerable openings in which are seated bolts 10 having flattened rounded heads 11 disposed on the adjacent faces of the memare seated in apertures in the horizontal portions 5 of the trough support. Thumb nuts 15 are applied to the threaded terminals for securing'the same in any desired vertical adjustment in conjunction with nuts 16.
In use the hog is laid upon its back in the ll-shaped trough with its head directed toward the lower portion of the trough, and is slid downward until its nose and head is caught beneath the transverse bar 13. The assistant then catches hold of the animals hind legs whereupon the animal is rendered absolutely helpless and is unable to free itself, or change its position. I-Ieretofore the method of securing the animal during operation was to either suspend it from its hind legs or hold it to the ground upon its side; in either of these positions the animal exerts considerable efiort in attempting to release itself. In our experience in the use of this invention we find that the animal remains quiet while on its back, and one assistant is enabled to hold a two hundred pound hog where heretofore three men were necessary besides the operator.
While our invention is intended primarily for use in vaccinating hogs, it nevertheless finds ready employment as a general operating table for the performance of various surgical operations upon hogs, pigs, and other small animals. Various ways of constructing our invention will occur to those, skilled in the art to which it appertains, and we therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details and otherwise altering the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent'is:
1. A vaccinating table comprising a trough shaped member, means for supporting the same at an inclination, a transversely extending support at the lower end of the member having an aperture at either end adjacent the upper longitudinal edges of the member, a transversely extending rod above the trough member, adjacent the support to retain the head of an animal under said rod and having down-turned threaded ends which enter the openings, and nuts applied to the threaded ends above and below the support to retain the rod in any vertically adjusted position.
2. A vaccinating table comprising longitudinal members hingedly connected at one of the longitudinal edges, supports formed of strap iron and provided with V-shaped bends for supporting the longitudinal membore in angular relation, and in an inclined position relative to the ground, the longitudinal members and the V-shaped bends of the supports having registerable openings, removable fastenings extending through the openings for securing together the members and the supports, a rod, having parallel threaded terminals for engagement in the support at the lower end of the members, and nuts engaging the threaded terminals and theisupports for maintaining the rod in adjusted position. 7
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
