Description

H. BRUGGE.

APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 23. 1915.

HERMANN BBfi'GGE, OF.H'ANOV ER, GERMANY.
DETACHABLE COVER FOR OPEN MOTOR-CARS.
Application filed September 23,1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hanan-xxx Bnt' ocn,
- a citizen of Germany. residing at Ludwigstrasse l2, Hanover, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improved Detachable Cover for Open Motorars, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide an easilydetachable cover or top portion, by means of which open motor cars may be quickly and conveniently converted into closed cars or carriages. The covering is constructed so as to save weight and at the same time to provide sufficient strength. The novel feature consists in having the covering constructed with a hinged rear part so as to enable this part to be thrown open if desired.
In order to render the present specification easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawing. in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views. a Figure ,1 is a side elevation of the body-of j the car-with vthe covering attached, and ,fshowing'the rear section in the open position 1in dottedlines. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan showing onehalf of the'cover seen from above and theother half from underneath;
Figs. 3 and tare two part'sid e elevations showing two d flerent'forms of constructing the movable art of the cover and Figs. 5. and 6 illustratein side elevation and plan respectively means for securing the movable partof the covering in position;
The roof framing a is supported on the transverse frame (1 mounted at the back of. the drivers seatand on the window frames (Z at either side of the back seat, these uprights being connectedby the top framing a stiffened by cross ribs or bars b. The whole of this light framing is fastened to the upper edge of the car by means of lugs or lashes 0 0 and screws, or any other suitable connection. The rear section is covered in at the back and sides by suitable flexible stuff or leather coverings or the like, attached to the rear edges of the body of the car.
' I n order to enable the-back part or section of the covering to be thrown back or Opened, the roof framing is divided trans- Specification of Letters Patent.

versely at the rear of the back uprights d of the windows so that the rear part a ot the, covering may be thrown back'as 1nd1- cated in dotted linesin Fig. l, and the movable s'ection is provided with rigid frame pieces (Z hinged at m to the stationary framing d of the windows.
When closed the rear part a", (Z, s is locked to; the fixed parta' by means ofknown clamping devices u. These locking devices connect up the transverse bars I), b. (Figs. 5 and (3) of the roof frame. \Vhen thrown open the rear part a may be supported on the back of the car or by means of chains In (Fig. 1) or other flexible or foldingmembers (Fig. 3). Instead of the latter a curved telescopic member t may be provided on one part. which works in a sleeve 1 on the other part, the movement being assisted by means of a spring 0. Means are provided-to enable the movable rear part to be closed tightly against the fixed member. \Vhen the parts are closed one against the other the whole flexible part of the covering is, of course. properly stretched.
It is of course known to mount heavy box like coverings on cars and 'it is also old to make the rear part of permanent oar covering capable of being turned back. But the object of the present invention is to provide a simple framework covered with flexible iaterialand having a rear frame also cov red with stuff and capable of being thrown open.
I claim as my invention In combination with a motor car having a body, a top detachably mounted on sald body, the forward portion of which is rigid
