Appucanon mea November 16, 1916. serial-No. 131,658. i
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. RANDALL,
a citizen of the United States, and a resi` dent of IVest I-Ioboken, in the county of Hudson and State of'New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Fly-Paper Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a fly paper holder but it is not limited to this use as the device is suitable as a stretcher for holding any article in stretched relation, as for instance, lace curtains.
The invention has for its general objects to provide a holding frame of simple, novel and inexpensive construction which effectively holds a strip of ily paper stretched flat with the frame protecting the paper, so that it cannot come in contact with other articles or be torn, and the frame forms a convenient means for enabling the paper to be leaned against or hung on a wall in vertical position, or enables it to lie flat on a table or other support.
A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a frame or holding device having novel means for clamping the ends of the fly paper or article in the frame, one of the clamping means being adjustable toward the other for adapting the device for fly paper or articles of dierent sizes.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,
Figure 1 is aperspective view of the device lying flat and supporting a fly paper; and
Figs. 2 and 3 are detail sectional views taken respectively on the lines 2-2 and 3 3, Fig. 1. Y
Referring to the drawing, A designates the frame or holder in which is clamped or stretched al strip of fly paper B, or other article. The frame A comprises side bars 1 and 2 and cross bars 3 and 4. These bars 3 and 4 have longitudinal grooves 5 and 6 into which clamping strips 7 and 8 are forced with the ends of the fly paper dis posed under the clamping strips so that they .will be forced into the grooves 5 and 6. The
cross pieces 3 and 4 are connected with the side bars 1 and 2 by corner blocks 9 and 10, which have recesses 11 and 12 in `their inner faces for receiving the ends of the bars 3 and 4, respectively. The bars 3 and 4 do not extend fully into the recesses and the blocks, so that passages 13 and 14 are provided for the side strips 1 and 2 to pass longitudinally through the blocks. The blocks 9 are rigidly fastened to the side strips 1 and 2 and the cross bar 3 is rigidly fastened to the blocks 9, but while the cross bar 4 is rigidly fastened to the blocks 10, the side bars 1 and 2'p'ass loosely. through the blocks 10, so that the cross bar 4 can be adjusted toward and from the cross bar 3 to thereby vary the effective length of the frame or holder. The clamping strips are long enough to lit into recesses 15 and 16 in the top'faces of the blocks 9 and 102 The side bars 1 and 2 are each provided with a series of notches or recesses 17, and by adjusting the blocks 10 longitudinally of the strips 1 and 2, the recesses 16 of the blocks can be brought into registry with any recess in the strips 1 and 2, so that the clamping bar 8 can be forced into the recesses 17 to hold the blocks 10 as well as the cross bar 4 in adjusted position. lIhus the clamping bar 8 performs two functions; that ofV clamping one end of the article B, and that 0f holding the adjustable bar 4 in Xed position with respect to the side bars 1 and 2.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A holder of the class described comprising side bars, cross bars, blocks fastened to the ends o f the cross bars, the side bars being rigidly fastened to one pair of the blocks and slidable in the other pair, lneans for clamping an article to one of the cross bars, and means for clamping an article to the other Cross bar and also clamping the blocks of said cross bar to the side bars.
2. A holder of the class described comprising a frame consisting` of side bars, a cross bar having a longitudinal groove, blocks 0n the ends of the said cross bar and through which the side bars slide, said blocks having recesses disposed in line With the said groove, and the side bars having a plurality of recesses, and a clamping strip adapted to Wedge into the groove and to engage n the recesses of the said blocks and side bars.
