Description

vT- MARTIN. COMBINATION TOOL. APPLICATION FILED MAR- 12, x915.
Patented Feb. 27, 1917.
INVENTOR RTIN 1 ATTORNEYS THOMAS MARTIN, or HOMESTEAD, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION-TOOL.-
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, THOMAS MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homestead, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a jar opener and closer, and has for its object to provide an implement in a manner as hereinafter set forth for use in uncapping that class of fruit jars provided with screw caps for tightening the cap in position upon the jar.
Further objects of the invention are to provide an implement for the purpose set forth which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, adjustable, readily set up in operative position with respect to the cap, convenient in its use and in expensive.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Fig. 3 is a top plan.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view illustrating the positioning of the elements when removing a cap. I
Referring to the drawing in detail 1 and 2 denote a pair of parallel members and which form the handle shank of a tapering handle 3.
The handle 3 rear thereof, cut away and a pair of shoulders rear of the handle 3, is a pin is pivotally mounted a gripping has its upper face, at the to provide a seat 16 17. Carried at the 19, upon which member 20, having a'segmental gripping jaw 21, and further provided with a depending p1n22, which limits the shifting movement of the gripping member 20 in either direction.
Fixedly secured to the upper face of the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 27, 1917, Application filed March 12, 1915. Serial No. 13,998.
members 1, 2, at the rear thereof, is an inverted yoke 23, and adjustably mounted upon the arms ofthe yoke is an adjustable gripping member 24, having a segmental gripping jaw 25, which is oppositely disposed with respect to the gripping jaw 21.
The member 24 is longitudinally shiftable.
upon the handle 3 and the latter is cut away to provide a seat 26 for said member 24. The member 24 has a pair of oppositely disposed triangular shaped slots 27 and through said slots the legs or arms of the yoke 23 extend and said yoke 23 and slots 27 provide means for adjustably connecting the member 24 to the handle 3.
When positioning the wrench for use, it 1s placed upon the top of the cap, with the members 20 and 24 engaging the periphery of the rim of the cap 28. As the member 20 is pivoted and the member 24 slidably mounted, it is obvious that they can be shifted to a position at an inclination with respect to the handle, so that said members will engage the periphery of the rim of the cap 28. Then by turning the handle, the members 20, 24, will tightly grip the rim and the cap can be released from the jar. WVhen the members 20 and 24 are adjusted to engage the rim of the cap 28, one of the arms of the yoke 23 is at the inner end of one of the slots 27, as indicated in Fig. 4, and the other arm of the yoke is positioned intermediate the ends of the other slot and during the cap removing operation the member 24 has a tendency to bear against that arm of the yoke 23 which is positioned at the inner end of the slot'27, whereby the member 24 is maintained in gripping position during the cap removing operation.
What I claim is 1. A jaw wrench comprising a handle shank, a jaw-carrier projecting therefrom, a gripping member pivotally mounted upon one end of said jaw-carrier and provided with a jaw, a gripping member formed with a pair of triangular-shaped slots mounted upon the other terminus of said j aw-carrier, a yoke connected to the jaw-carrier and having its arm extending through said slots for shiftably connecting said slotted gripping member and the j aw-carrier, and a pin carried by the first mentioned gripping'memher and capable of engaging the jaw-carrier to arrest the pivotal movement of said member.
2. A. jaw wrench comprising a handle shank, a jaw-carrier projecting therefrom, a gripping member pivotally connected to the outer end of said jaw-carrier, provided with a jaw and having means to limit the pivotal movement thereof, a gripping member shiftably mounted upon said carrier and having a jaw opposing the jaw of the first mentioned gripping member, said jaws being segmental in contour, said shiftably mounted gripping member provided with a pair of triangular-shaped slots, and a yoke carried by the jaw member and having its arms extended through said slots and in connection with the sides of these latter setting up a locking action to prevent the shifting of the slotted gripping member when the latter is in engagement with the cap of a ar.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
