Description

N. H. HAAPANEN. STOVE LIVD LIFTER.
APPLICATION FLn APRA. 1916.
1,217,758. Patented Feb. 27; 1917.
NORMAN H. I-IAAPANEN, OF SOUTH KANGE, MICHIGAN.
STOVE-LID LIIE'TER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatcntedFeb. 27, 1917.
Application filed April 4, 1916. Serial No. 88,961.
To all whom it may ooncem:
Be it known. that I, NORMAN H. HAAPA- NEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Range, in the County of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lid Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved lid lifter embodying in connection with the lifter, a guard which is pivotally connected thereto and extends forwardly therefrom and also embodying a spring to cause the guard to bear on a lid, When the lifter is in use and thereby hold the lid firmly on the lifter and prevent it from dropping therefrom.
The invention also embodies alid lifter and a pivotally connected guard, each provided with an asbestos handle.
The invention consists in the features of Construction, co'mbination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed..
In the accompanying drawingsz- Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of a lifter constructed and arranged in accordance with my nventon and showng the same in use.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
The lifter 1 is provided with a point 2 which is adapted to be inserted in the recess of a stove lid and to engage under the side ledges or stops of the recess. The shank 3 of the lifter is eurved and is formed with a shoulder 4 and is also formed with an arm 5 which passes through an asbestos handle 6 and is provided at the outer end With a Washer 7, which is swaged to the arm and bears against the outer end of the handle.
I also provide a guard 8, the shank 9 of which is bifurcated as at 10 to receive the shank of the lifter and is formed With forcopies of this patent may be obtained for lid, the guard being pivotally connected to the lifter by means of a bolt 14. The guard also has a' rearwardly extending arm 15 on which -is an asbestos handle 16, Secured by a Washer 17. A spring 18 is Secured on the under side .of the guard as at 19 and bears and presses upwardly under the shank of the lifter at a point in front of the pivot, and as shown, so that the spring; when the lifter is engaged with a lid, presses the guard downwardly and causes the guard to bear firmly on the lid and hence prevent the lifter from slipping therefrom, or the lid from dropping from the lifter. While lifting a lidby* means of the lifter, the user of the device grasps both of the handles as will be understood.
Owing to the provision of the guard, and
'the forwardly eXtending fork arms thereof which project forwardly from the lifter, the guard will press on the smallest member of a three piece lid, when the outer or larger piece is engaged by the lifterand hold all of the pieces of the lid in place and without dropping them. I V V The asbestos handles with which the lifter and guardare provided are non-conductors of heat and enable' the devce to be used withoutburning the hand of the user.
Having described the invention, what claimed is:
In combination with a lid lifter, a guard having a rearwardly extending arm provided with a handle, said guard being bifurcated and conprising a pair of forwardly diverging arms and a cross bar connecting the front ends of said arms, said lifter being arranged between the arms of the guard and pivotally connected thereto, and a spring to engage the guard with the upper side of a lid when the lifter is in use.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. r
u NORMAN H. HAAPANEN.
