MONTIEVILLE POWELL, OF SOUTH LEBANdN, OHIO.
NEEDLE-THREADER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 13, 1915'. Serial No. 21,099.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONTIEVIL E POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Lebanon, in the county of WVarrenv and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle- Threaders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to needle threaders, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple device, of comparatively few parts, which can be manufactured at a slight cost, and which will be reliable and eflicient for its purpose of threading needles.
The above and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a needle threader made in accordance with this in-' vention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section through the needle hole portion of the device and showing a needle connected to the point or hook in position for threading the same, and the gage for the button hole cutter being removed.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a fiat blade tapered toward a point 2, and provided with a cutting edge 3 and a dull or non-cutting edge 4. The cutting edge 3 is beveled on both sides of the blade, thus insuring a straight out through the fabric or material. The edges 3 and 4 taper to the point 2. A longitudinal slot 5 extends from near the point 2 backward throughout the greater portion of the blade. A gage comprising an outwardly extending member 6 and an angular member 7 which is provided with lips 8 extending through the slot 5, and provided with a screw 10 thereon and having a milled head. The gage may then be moved along the slot 5 to determine the length of the button hole to be cut by inserting the point 2 in the material and pushing it in until the material meets the gage member 6, as will be understood. To the outer end of the blade. 1 is secured a needle threader comprising a tube 11 having a slot 12, saidtube having parallel members 13 extending therefrom and said parallel members being secured with the blade 1 between them by means of suitable rivets 1-1. An inclined slot 15 is formed in the upper edge ofv the members 13, and extending across and near the end of the slot in a vertical position is a threading hook 16, said hook having a downwardly extending point or member 17. To thread a needle a the eye of the needle is inserted over the hook member 16 the shank of the needle extending through the slot 12. The thread is looped in the slot 15, and as the needle is drawn outward the hook 17 engages the thread and as the needle is drawn off the hook, the thread is drawn through the eye I) of the needle.
Slight changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in. the claim.
What is claimed is:-
A needle threader comprising a tube, said tube provided with an elongated slot therein, parallel members spaced apart at their outer ends and formed integrally with the tube, and oppositely disposed from the elongated slot, said parallel members provided on their upper edges with downwardly and inwardly directed slots, a hook formed on said. parallel members and extending across and adjacent the ends of said downwardly and inwardly directed slots and adapted to receive the eye of a needle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
