`IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICATORS FOR CAR-AXLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,575, dated December 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BARBER, of Bridesburg', in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Car-Axle Lubricator, of which the following is a specification: UT
My invention consists of a spirally-ground roller arranged on spring-bearings, working in vertical guides, and all mounted on a plate, which is screwed up against the bottom of the axle-box, which has a large hole to admit the roller and 'its support into it from the bottom, the plate holding the roller up against the under side of the axle and made fast by bolts, which hold said roller against the axle to be revolved by the contact of it, and caused to carry the oil up to said axle. The said lubricating-roller is made large enough, -as others have been, to extend from the journal nearly to the bottom of the. box, so as to insure the carrying up of the oil to the journal when but little remains in the box.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved lubricating arrangement, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
A is the axle; B, the axle-box; G, the spiral- 1y ground lubricating roller; D, the vertical guides for the bearings of the roller and holders for the springs E; F, the plate on which the whole is mounted; and G, the screws for bolting the plates to the under side of the caraxle box, which has a large hole, H, adapted to allow the roller to be inserted from below, and removed at any time without interfering with the axle. The plate is made broad enough to lap the bottom around the hole, where packing may be introduced, to make a tight joint. The arrangement of the apparatus on the plate F affords a most ready means of taking it out for repairs, cleaning, and the like.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plate F, carrying the spirally-grooved roller O mountedin spring-bearingsarl arranged in connection with and attached to the under side ofthe axle-box, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
