FRAME FOR SUPPORTING GRINDING-STONES.
Specification of Letters Fatent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1917.
Application filed May 25, 1916. Serial No. 99,885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WI LIAM A. YAR- woon, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Salle, in the county of Niagara, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Supporting Grinding-Stones; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in frames for supporting grinding stones, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which can be held in engagement with a wall or support and the grind stone supporting shaft rotated through themedium ofa conventional form of brace.
A further object of the invention is to provide a frame ,of this character which supports the grinding stone operating shaft, said shaft being so constructed that the grind stone can be adjusted longitudinally thereof.
WVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view.
Fig. A is a sectional view on line H of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the frame which is preferably formed from sheet metal and consists of a side bar 2 and end 3.
.The rear end bar 3 is provided with a bearing 4 which is engaged by the shaft 5, said shaft having its rear end provided with a head 6, the purpose of which will appear later. The shaft 5 is threaded for a major portion of its length and has its forward end provided with a reduced extension 7 which is adapted to rotatably engage the bearing 8 carried by the forward bar 3.
Mounted on the threaded part of the shaft is a grind stone 9, which may be formed from any suitable material, said grind stone being held in adjusted positions on the shaft 5 by jam nuts 10. It is obvious that the c0 31" 01 this patent may be grind stone can be readily removed from the shaft should it be desired to substitute another one.
- A shank 11 is carried by the forward end bar 3 and has its outer end provided with spurs 12 which are adapted to bite into a suitable support, whereby the forward end of the frame will be held properly. When the spurs 12 are engaged with the support the brace chuck 13 is engaged with the head 6. Thus it will be seen that upon rotation of the brace the shaft 5 can be rotated so as to rotate the grind stone 9.
A spring pressed hook 14 is connected to the bar 3 having the bearing 1, and is adapted to engage the shaft 5 so as to retain the shaft in the bearing, and since the other end of the shaft is removably engaged in the bearing 8 it is obvious that the shaft can be easily removed.
A bar 15 is provided and has its ends pivotally supported in the ends of the bars 3. Engaged in one end of the bar 15 is a clamping nut 16, which serves to retain the bar 15 in any desired adjusted positions A plate 16 is adjustably connected to the bar 15, and serves to hold the tools to be sharpened in clamped engagement with the bar 15, and in proper relation to the grindstone.
What is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a frame, a shank associated with the forward end of the frame and having spurs carried thereby, bearings carried by the ends of the frame, a shaft rotatably engaged in said bearings, the forward end of said shaft being detachably engaged with the bearing carried by the adjacent end of the frame, a grind stone adjustably connected to the shaft, a head carried by the rear end of the shaft, a bar pivotally and adjustably connected to the end bars of the frame, a clamping plate adjustably connected to said bar, said spurs being adapted to be engaged with a support, and means detachably en-' gaged with the head to rotate the shaft and to aid in holding the spurs engaged with the support.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. YARWOOD.
