Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE IVALKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scales, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to that type of article commonly known as an ice scale, since it is scales of this kind which are usually used by the retail distributors of ice. The object of this invention is to provide a scale of this character having a novel and convenient method of adjustment, and of new and improved construction, particularly as regards the materials from which it is made, which among other things reduces its cost of manufacture.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a scale embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, a denotes the head of the scale, provided in its upper portion with a loop I), and in its lower portion with a flange c. The head is axially bored and threaded to receive the adjusting I nut d, the upper end of which is exposed in the loop so that it can be turned by a suitable instrument. It is held in adjusted position by the set screw 6. This adjusting nut is centrally bored and supports the swivel 5 which is free to turn relative to the nut and to which the upper end of the spring 10 is secured. To the lower end of the spring there is secured the tail-piece 15 which as shown is formed of sheet metal folded upon itself and provided with riveting projections 16, by means of which the,
pointer bars 17 are secured thereto. At the upper ends of these bars and offset therefrom are formed the pointers 18.
The barrel, indicated generally at 20, is made up of two semi-cylindrical shells 21, 22, formed up to shape from sheet metal, their abutting edges being spaced slightly apart to provide a space within which the pointers 18 may move. At the lower end these shells are mounted in a sheet metal base ring 25. The upper end of the barrel fits over the flange a on the head and is secured thereto in any desired manner. A scale plate 30 is secured at opposite sides turbing the assembly of the scale; that this adjustment can be locked in position and the spring and tail piece swivel in the adjusting nut without disturbing it. The sheet metal construction of the barrel and of the tail-piece permits of a very economical manufacture, a simple assembly, and greatly reduces the Weight of the complete device.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
I claim as my invention 1. In a device of the character described, a scale head axially apertured, a tubular member adjustably mounted in the aperture in said head and projecting to the exterior thereof, a headed spring support carried by said member and with its stem extending therethrough, and a spring carried by said support.
2. In a device of the character described, a scale head provided on its upper side with a loop and axially apertured between the branches of said loop, atubular member adjustably mounted in the aperture with its end projecting into said loop, a headed spring support carried by said member and with its stem projecting therethrough to a point below said head, and a spring carried by said support.
3. In a device of the character described, a head provided at its upper end with a loop and having a threaded axial aperture, an adjusting member threaded into said aperture from the underside of the head to present an operative part between the branches of the loop, and a spring supporting member carried by said adjusting member.
4. In a device of the character described,
' A hook a head, a barrel formed of two semicylindrical sheet metal shells secured at their upper ends to said head, and with their abutting edges slightly spaced apart, a base ring to which the lower ends of said shells are secured, a spring located within said barrel and supported by said head, and cooperative indicating devices on said barrel and spring.
5. In a device of the character described, a head, a barrel formed of two semicylindrical sheet metal shells secured at their upper ends to said head, a base ring to which the lower ends of said shells are secured, a spring located within said barrel and supported by said head, a sheet metal tail piece secured to the lower end of said spring, pointer bars secured to and upstanding from said tail piece, and pointers at the ends of said bars cooperating with the scale on said barrel.
6. In a device of the character described, a head, a barrel secured at its upper end to said head, said barrel comprising a pair of semi-cylindrical sheet metal members arranged with their abutting edges slightly spaced apart, a base ring in which the lower ends of said members are secured, a spring located within said barrel and supported from said head, and pointers carried by said spring and movable in the spaces between the edges of said barrel members.
