To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD E. STRAUSS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display- Stands for Swatch-Books, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to cabinets or stands for swatches and the like, for use in cus tom tailoring establishments, and, more particularly, to a cabinet that is adapted to store the samples and provide means whereby the large and cumbersome book, wherein are contained said samples, may be supported for the purpose of conveniently displaying and examining the same. One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a swatch cabinet and stand that is convenient for the purposes for which it is designed, so that the large swatch books may be handled with ease when being displayed to a customer. Another object of my invention is the provision of a stand of this character that is strong and durable, and is comparatively inexpensvie to manufacture. A further object of my invention is the provision of a stand wherein the necessary squares and measuring tapes, measure blanks and the like, of tailoring establishments, may be conveniently and neatly stored so as to be al ways ready for use. i

I prefer to accomplish the divers objects of my invention by the means and in the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which,

struction similar to that shown in the drawings, and provided with a central boss 11, in which the standard, 12, is mounted. The base, 10, is preferably rectangular in shape and is supported above the floor by suitable feet, 9, and at one edge the base is provided with an upstanding flange, the purpose of which is to provide a rest or shelf for one or more measure books, swatch or sample books.

The upper portion of the standard, 12, is screw-threaded internally and is adapted to receive an exteriorly screw-threaded stud, 14, depending. from the lower central portion of a boxlike cabinet and lectern. This cabinet is rectangular .in shape, excepting that the upper edges, 15, of the vertical walls thereof are inclined or oblique, as shown in Figs. 3 and a of the drawings, and is preferably made of .a single piece of metal, of U-shape crosssection, as shown, and has its corners reinforced with angle metal strips, 16, 17. A suitable shelf, 18, constructedof a flat piece of metal of L-shape cross-section, is secured to the taller or rear wall of the cabinet and extends forwardly thereof to approximately the center of the compartment. A lectern, which comprises a cover plate, 19, is mounted upon the top or upper edges of the cabinet by means of hinges, 20, secured to the rear wall of the cabinet and tothe under surface of the cover plate, 19. Said plate, 19, at its lower forward edge is provided with an unturned flange, 21, that extends from near one transverse edge thereof to near the opposite transverse edge, and its ends taperdownwardly, as at 22, so as to merge into the front edge of the plate, 19. Suitable lips, 23, are provided at the end portions of the front edge of plate, 19, that are formed integrally from the said plate by bending a small portion thereof back upon itself so as to provide a means whereby the binding or cover of the swatch books may be conveniently inserted thereunder when the book is opened for use. The rear or uppermost edge of the plate, 19, is bent downwardly to form a V-shaped flange, 24, so that when the cover plate, 19, is raised, the longitudinal edge of this flange will abut the rear wall of the cabinet (as shown in Fig. l of the drawings) and prevent the further rear ward movement thereof and the consequent overbalancing of the stand. To assist in retardin the movement of the cover plate, 19, I provide a suitable chain, 31, anchored respectively to the cover and side wall of the box member (Fig. 4).

Secured to the outer surface of the flange, 24, are suitable uprights or posts, 25, that are connected at their upper ends by a horizontally disposed connecting plate, 26, and secured to the central portion of this plate is a suitable metal frame, 27, of any desired shape, preferably rectangular, and having a central open portion that is provided with a mirror, 28, secured therein by means of suitable clips, 29, to prevent the accidental removal thereof. This frame, together with the posts, 25, is made of angle metal, the posts being of U-shape cross-section and the frame of L-shape cross-section, and rein forced with corner plates, 30, of triangular shape.

If desired, the frame, 27, may contain advertisements or signs, the same being secured in the frame by the clips, '29, in the same manner as the mirror above described.

While I have herein illustrated and described a preferred manner of constructing this device, it, of course, will be obvious that divers modifications thereof are possible without materially departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore desire it understood that such changes are contemplated as coming within the scope of my invention as expressed in the appended claims.

What I claim is 1. A stand comprising a base, a post arising therefrom, a substantially rectangularshaped cabinet supported upon the upper end of said post and provided with an open upper portion, a hinged closure for said cabinet consisting of a rectangular metal plate provided at its lower edge with an upturned flange intermediate its ends, a lateral member depending from the upper edge of said plate, whereby when said closure is raised the lateral member thereof will engage a wall of said cabinet, and a display structure secured to said lateral member and extended above the upper edge of said plate.

2. A stand comprising a base, a post arising therefrom, a substantially rectangularshaped cabinet supported upon the upper end of said post and provided with an open upper portion, the side walls of said cabinet increasing in height toward the rear wall thereof, a hinged closure for said cabinet consisting of a rectangular metal plate pro vided at its lower edge with an upturned flange intermediate its ends, a lateral member depending from the upper edge of said plate, whereby when said closure is raised the lateral member thereof will engage a wall of said cabinet, and a display structure secured to said lateral member and extended above the upper edge of said plate.
