EIEr. I
' DAVID ERIKSON, OF DRAY'ION, NORTH DAKOTA.
PENCIL-HOLDER AND ENVELOP-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 191%.
Application filed May 17, 1916. Serial No. 98,139.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID EnIKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Drayton, in the county of Pembina, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Hold ers and Envelop-Openers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for pencils and the like and has special reference to an improved pencil holder and envelop opener combined.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an economical and simple device which may be attached to a pencil or the like and which, when so attached, will constitute a clasp for retaining the pencil in the pocket of the owner and at the same time be provided with a device which, when the clasp is in position on the pencil can be used as an envelop opener.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel de tails of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as attached to a pencil and showing the manner of using the same to open an envelop;
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the a device removed from the pencil.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the blank from which the device is made.
In the construction of this device there is provided a blank having an elongated body portion 10, and on each side of this body portion between the ends thereof is a latorally extending wing 11. The bowed end of the body portion is provided with a sharp point as at 15.2 for the purpose of engaging in the wood of the pencil and preventing the device from slipping. The rear or lower end of the body 10 has its extremity bent back as at 13 to form a knob which engages the clothing of the wearer between itself and the body of the pencil when in use. This blank has one of the wings 11 punched as at 14 to provide perforations and between these perforations the blank is struck up as at 15, to form a hinge eye. After the blank is formed the wings 11 are bent so that the body of this blank, together with the wings practically forms a circle the ends of the wlngs being slightly spaced. It is to be noted that this part of the device is made throughout of spring metal or other desired spring material so that when applied to a pencil, the wings may grasp the same tightly and the knob 13 be effective in holding the clothing.
Extending through the perforations 14 and lying in the eye 15 is theshank 16 of an envelop opener, this envelop opener be ing formed of wire and being first bent at an obtuse angle to form a lateral portion 17 and then bent back to form a terminal portion 18.
Thus the bar has formed at its extremity a laterally opening V-shaped end or hook and the point of this hook lies closely adjacent to the side of the pencil when the device is applied thereto.
When it is desired to use the device as an envelop opener the point of the arm 18 is inserted between the body of the envelop and the flap and the pencil grasped near this point and moved along so that the arm 18 tears the envelop open along the flap.
There has thus been provided a simple and etficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefoie desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
What is claimed is An attachment for pencils and the like comprising a spring material clasp consisting of a body portion arranged to extend alongside of the pencil and having intermediate its ends a pair of wings bent into substantially circular form to embrace the pencil, a member having a shank connected to one of the wings and having a hook at its free end, one of said wings having a pair of spaced perforations and having the material between the perforations bent to form,
a hinge eye, and a Wire member having one end passing through the perforations and held in the eye, the other end of said memher being bent to form a laterally opening V adapted to lie with the extremity of the Wire close to the side of the pencil When applied thereto.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, 1'11 the presence of two wltnesses.
I. STEENsoN, KARL Nrrz.
