EDWIN S. MATHESOIN, OF 'WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA.
NECKTIE-I-IOLDER.
Application filed February 29, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN S. MATHESON, a citizen of United States, residing at lVest Palm Beach, in the county of Palm Beach, State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in necktie holders.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a simple device of this character which will hold the ends of a four-in-hand tie in position, and which will be completely hidden thereby.
)ther objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and with particular reference to the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the ends of a four-inhand tie and the front portion of a shirt, showing my holder in position, Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the holder, Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear elevation of the holder.
Referring particularly to the accompany ing drawing the preferred form of my holder is illustrated, and consists of a pin portion 10 which is adapted for penetrating engagement with the ends of a four-inhand tie, from the rear.
The holder is formed of a single piece of material, preferably wire of sufficient stifiness to resist bending to a great extent. At the upper end of the pin portion the wire is bent outwardly at right angles at 11, and again laterally at right angles at 12, thence downwardly to a point 13, where it is bent to extend upwardly at 14 to form one leg of the loop 15. The other leg of the loop is bent similarly at 16 and 17 and has its upper end coiled around the pin portion at 18.

Serial No. 680,611.
Thus is formed an approximately rectangular frame having an upwardly extending loop in the central portion thereof. The lower portions of the legs of the loop are closer to each other than the upper portions, so that bowed portion 19 is formed to receive a button of the shirt, the narrow portion of the loop permitting the slightly forcible entrance of the stitches of the button, but preventing the accidental displacement thereof.
The operation may be briefly described as follows: The pin portion of the holder is first; engaged in the ends of the tie from beneath, and in a position directly opposite one of the buttons of the shirt front. The loop portion is then slipped over the button, so that the button will snap into the upper portion of the loop. The resiliency of the loop will hold the device to the button, so that upward pull of the tie ends will engage said ends more firmly with the pin.
The device is simple in operation, and cheap to manufacture, and can be worn to effectively hold the ends of the tie in place without being seen, as is the case with the tie clasps now in use.
What is claimed is:
A device for holding a necktie from rising on the wearer, consisting of an approximately rectangular spring wire frame, one end portion of which is re'e'ntrant and ineludes an inwardly broadening throat, one end of the wire of the frame terminating in an eye and the other end of the wire passing through the eye and extending thence longitudinally and centrally of the rectangle behind and in spaced relation thereto.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN S. MATHESON.
