at Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES SAMUEL BERRY, a citizen of the United States, ing at Tuckerman, in the county of Jackson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mentholated or Minted Cathartic Salts; and I do hereby declare the following to be 'a and exact description of the invention, such. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use'the same;
My invention relates to a pharmaceutical preparation and a special method of treatment of a medicinal agent whereby sai agent will be rendered much more eficient in character and my invention consists in a new and useful method or process and also in a new and useful product as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
The prime object of my invention among others is to disguise the normal taste and impart an agreeable odor or smell to salts commonly employed as a cathartic, whereby the salts treated by my method will be rendered pleasant in taste and smell or in other words rendered very pleasant and palatable, where without my treatment it would be more or less disagreeable and nauseating in its effects, asfor instance Epsom and other salts.
A further object of my invention is to utilize the salts, commonly employed as a cathartic, as a vehicle to carry thoroughly incorporated with it an antiseptic and an anesthetic agent whereby the administration of the salts as a cathartic will also act beneficially upon the entire digestive tract.
. Other objects and advantages will be hereand also '8 drops of oil of peppermint and 8 drops of Spearmint. Orrin other words, the composition consists of equal parts of menthol crystals, oil of peppermint, and oil of Spearmint, to approximately one thousand parts of cathartic salts.
It is very important that' the above shall- M be. thoroughly triturated in order "to iii-twat resid-' d tals will be -will also be in its modified state,
Specification of Letters Patent; Pat-(emigrant Jan 116, 1%1L't', 1 Application filed July 5, 1916. Serial No. 107,690.
the perfect incorporation of said parts with each other and I, therefore, menthol crystals to a fine powder which is then thoroughly mixed with the salts, after which the mixture is preferably reduced to a uniform powdered consistency as by grindingor by mortar and pestle.
It will, of course, be understood that the thorough commingling of the powdered menthol and salts may be accomplished in any preferred manner deemed most efiective for the purpose, the object being to produce an admixture of the character stated wherein the powdered menthol crysmost thoroughly incorporated with the-salts when the result will be found to be a most agreeable and palatable article, having not only the cathartic medicinal property of the salts but also a decided antiseptic character which will also possess a sufficiently anesthetic and analgestic power to be of important and valuable service in its action upon the nervous system and the intestinal tract, whereby cramped and spasmodic conditions are. at once relieved with a resulting cure of flatulency, indigestion, sick and sour stomach, echo and the destruction of worms, etc.
ll, therefore, desire to call particular. attention to the fact that l have provided a new and useful method of treating cathartic salts in such a *mannerthat they will not 'only be rendered agreeable and pleasant to menthol crystals with oil of peppermint and spearmint substantially as ereinbefore specified. It has been found in practice that menefficacious for the treatment not only primarily of constipation but will also prove a very agreeable cooling agent in its action on the stomach and bowels, but the salts and palatable.
The administration or use of my mentholated salts will be substantially as follows; I z. e.: one to two tablespoonfuls in sufficient water every three hours until desired efiect is obtained; dose for children proportion to age. 1
first reduce the due to the thorough incorporation with the salts of powdered] pleasant L; be fo to he a safe a m idta .1116 i thartic for constipation, sick-headache, foul breath, heart-burn, dyspepsia and kindred disabilities of the alimentary canal.
I reserve the right to prepare myxmentholated orminted. cathartic salts in saturated solution form if desired.
Having thus described my improved I method of preparing cathartic salts, What I claim and desire 1SI 1. ThG PI'OCGSS of making mentholated cathartic salts, consisting of taking equal to secure by Letters-Patent,
parts of menthol crystals, oil of peppermint, and oil of Spearmint, adding the menthol to approximately one'thousand parts of ca thartic salts and then .triturating the same,
name to this specification.
\ CHARLES SAMUEL BERRY.
