To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, M. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aliquippa, in the county of Beaver and- State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Internal Combustion Engines, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to internal combustion engines, and has for its principal objects to produce a simple and practical valve mechanism whereby the intake charge and exhaust discharge may be controlled by one and the same valve. To increase the efiiciency of the engine by providing large port areas and disposing said ports in the cylinder head in line with the travel of the piston, and to provide a valve mechanism that will be as silent as possible when in service, and consists in certain other features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein an example of my improvement is applied to an internal combustion engine of the single cylinder type, in which drawings Figure 1 is a horizontally disposed longitudinal section through the cylinder and piston of the engine. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, in section, on the line IIII of Fig. 1 showing the valve therein. Fig. 3 is a plan of the cylinder head removed from the cylinder. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan of the head removed from the cylinder showing the intake and exhaust passages. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan of the valve for controlling the intake and exhaust passages.
Referring to said drawings, 1 is the cylinder surrounded by a water jacket 2, of any conventional form as may also be the piston 3, but the head 1 of the cylinder I prefer to be separately formed, principally for convenience in machining, and for the purpose of applying the head to the cylinder, to form a tight joint, the end of said cylinder is provided with an annular seat having tapered portions 4 and at.
The cylinder head, 4:, has its peripheral portion formed to correspond with and form a tight joint about and within the cylinder end, the means here shown to secure the same in place being the spaced bolts 5 in the cylinder end passing through straddle bars 6. Said cylinder head has formed within the inner portion thereof opposite spaced and like formed sectorshaped intake port 7 and exhaust port 8, the intake port tapering to and adapted to be connected at the opening 9 with a suitable intake pipe and the exhaust port tapering to and adapted to be connected at the opening 10 with a suitable exhaust pipe, the hollow spaces 11 and 12, between said ports, forming water-cooling spaces, each communicating with the water-jacket about the cylinder by suitable passages 13.
The valve for controlling the intake and exhaust ports of the cylinder comprises a disk 14 engaging the inner face portion of the head and is mounted. on a stem 15 passing through an opening formed in the center of the head and its external boss 1, said valve having formed therethrough a sector-shaped port 16 corresponding in form and approximate dimension with that of the cylinder intake and exhaust ports.
The valve stem is provided with a fixed sleeve 17 having a beveled face corresponding in form to the face cavity in the boss 4 of the cylinder head.
While the valve is of such form and arrangement that it may be either rotated or oscillated upon its axis to control the intake and exhaust ports I prefer that the valve be oscillated, and for the purpose of ac comlnodating a preferred form of mechanism for converting a reciprocating motion into an oscillating motion, as later described, I have provided the boss 4 of the cylinder head with a concave face and fixedly attached a sleeve 17 to the valve stem, the enlarged face portion of which is tapered to correspond to the face of the cylinder boss, the face of each having a groove formed therein into which are placed balls 18, thus forming an anti-friction thrust bearing.
The preferred form for oscillating the valve comprises a member, 19, rigidly fixed upon the end of the valve stem and provided in its face with a plurality of grooves, 19, disposed spirally thereabout which engages in a socket 20 rigid upon the end of a suitably reciprocated rod 21, said socket being arranged to operate in a suitably fixed bearing 22 and is provided upon its interior with ribs 20 corresponding to and back to its normal position by a return reciprocation of the rod 21 until after the usual compression and ignition occurs, then at the proper moment the reciprocating rod 21 still further reciprocates in its return direction until the valve port registers with the exhaust and when the exhaust is completed the said rod, 21, reciprocates toward the cylinder suflicient to again bring the valve to neutral position.
.Vhile I have shown and described a particular form and structure of my improvement it is to be understood that the same is intended to serve only as an example and that in practice said form and structure may be changed or modified in detail without departing from the spirit of the invention herein claimed.
I claim as my invention and desire to se-' cure by Letters Patent:
-1. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a cylinder of a uniform bore and having its head provided with a central valve-stem opening and with an intake port and an exhaust port, said ports being disposed beyond said valve-stem opening, a disk valve mounted on a stem extending through said opening and disposed on the inner face of said head, said valve having a port formed therethrough to control both the intake port and the exhaust port, and reiprocating means disposed in alinement with the stem of and adapted to impart an oscillating movement to said valve.
2. In an internal combustion engine, the combination with the cylinder having a uniform bore of a removable head provided with a central valve-stem opening and with an intake port and an exhaust port, said ports being disposed beyond said valve-stem opening, a disk valve mounted on a stem extending through said opening and disposed on the inner face of said head, said valve having a port formed therethrough to control both of said intake and exhaust ports, and reciprocating means disposed in alinement with the stem of and adapted to impart an oscillating movement to said'valve.

6.
