RAILWAY-RAIL.
Specification bi Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 2, 191 7.
Application filed February 2, 1916. Serial No. 75,815.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOVAN DROBAG, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Lackawanna, in the county-of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway- Rails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in means for connecting the meeting ends of railway rails, and the object of the inven tion is to construct the ends of two rails in such a manner as to provide an interlocking engagement between the same so that the said rails will be prevented from independent lateral movement but will be permitted alimited movement in a longitudinal direcion.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and fall ing within the scgipe of the appended claim.
In the drawing-'2 Figure 1 is a perspective view of two rails-constructed and connected in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through transverse sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a perspective View of=one of the rail ends, Fig. 5 is a similar view of the end of the other rail, and Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken approximately centrally through the lead portions of the connected rails.
In the drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 I? designatoftwo rails and 3 the ties upon which the rails rest. The rails 1 and 2 are cf the ordinary construction and the rail 1 has one of its ends provided with a web extension 4: that enters the head of said web or in other words the portion i of .the web is of a greater height than the Web proper, the upper edge of the same terminating a suitable distance below the hearing surface of the head of the said rail 1. The upper edge of said extension e is horizontally straight, and the same is formed at its upper corner with a nose 5;; The nose is flat in plan and has its edges of an arcuate formation, the said edges projecting laterally beyond the the same, Fig. 3 is a sides of said extension 4. The flange 6 of the rail 1 is formed with a reduced extension 7, the same terminating in a laterally extending nose 8, and this nose has its opposite edges curved, the said nose being disposed directly below the nose 5, so that the web extension 4 is provided with spaced parallel lateral extensions.
The rail 2 has its web out at a suitable distance from its end providing the same with a vertically straight shoulder 9, the flange of the said rail 2 having a rounded opening 10 to receive the nose 8 of the rail 1, the reduced portion provided by the opening receiving the flanged extension 7 of the said rail 1. The underface of the head of the rail 2 is formed with a pocket 11 which has its side walls rounded, and which is adapted to receive the nose 5, a restricted passage 12 entering from the end of the head of the rail 2 to the said pocket 11 to receive the portion of the web extension 4: between the nose 5 and the end of the head of the rail 1. The pocket and opening in the rail 2 is arranged to have the walls provided thereby. engage with the side walls of the nose members of the rail 1 to hold the rails against independent lateral or side movement when assembled, but a limited longitudinal movement is permitted to allow for the expansion and contraction of the rails. The engaging ends of the rails rest upon one of the \ties 3 and with a construction as above described, it will be noted that the employment of splice bars or other connecting means is dispensed with. It is, of course, to he also noted that the depth of the pocket, 11 corresponds with the thickness of the nose 5 so that the heads of the rails 1 and 2 will be maintained in proper alinement when assembled.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a rail joint, two rails, onehaving a,95 web extension which has its upper edge horizontally straight, said web extension from its uppercorner being "formed with a nose} which is flat in plan, the flange of the rail being formed with an extension terminating in a nose disposed below the first mentioned nose, the other rail having its flange and head extending beyond the Web portion, said nose, the extension of the flange of the first flange at its end formed With a vertical mentioned rail being provided with an openopening to receive the Web extension of the ing to receive the second mentioned nose to 10 first mentioned rail, the Web being cut to re prevent lateral movement of the rails when 5 ceive the extension of the first mentioned assembled.
rail, the underface'of its head being formed In testimony whereof T affix my signature. with a pocket to receive the first mentioned JUVAN DROBAC,
