cleansing the vagina, and for bathing the same with medicated liquid. rI he objects of the invention are to obtain a device which can be used interchangeably as a bulb syringe, so called, or as a fountain syringe; thus permitting the person using it to apply it for cleansing purposes or for medical uses, or both.
Other objects are to obtain a device which can be changed from a bulb to a fountain syringe, and back, by persons not particularly skilled in mechanics; to obtain a device which is simple in construction, not liable to get out of order, durable and easily operated. Y
In the drawing Figure l is an elevation of the device with parts of the outer shell or casing thereof removed, parts shown in section; and the several parts assembled for use as a fountain syringe. Fig. 2 is a section of those elements which are illustrated in Fig. 1 in elevation, and a side elevation of a bulb attached to said parts. Fig. Sis a vertical section of the device assembled for use as a bulb syringe. Fig. 4; is a side elevation of a guard forming an element of the device. And Fig. 5 is a vertical section, on an enlarged scale, of a portion of the base of the device, showing a check valve and passage way in elevation.

A is a cylindrical shell or casing, which is provided with the internal screw threads a at one end thereof. The other end of said shell is restricted, as at B, and is provided with the opening B.

D is a stem and d is a passage waythrough G is a base which is provided with passage ways d and d therethrough. Stem D is attachable to base Cr by means of screw threads D', and when said stem is so attached the passage ways Z and d register to obtain a continuous passage way from one side of the base G to thedischarge end of stem D. Base G is provided with screw threads g which correspond with and fit screw threads a in cylindrical shell A, and said base is attach- Iable in the end of said shell by means of said vscrew threads.

e -is the stem of valve E, e is a groove in steine, and e isa pin in stem D which eX- tends throughgroove or slot e. Valve E has two functions one being to prevent the back iow of air or liquid in thedischarge endof passage way cl, and the other, to give a determined direction and shape to the liquid discharged from said passage way.
F is a check valve in passage way d, and f is a pin to prevent said check valve from falling out of place when off its seat to an extenty which will prevent its automatically seating when liquid is directed against it. Base Cr is also provided with screw threads g.
I-I and M are, respectively, elements by means of which a pipe or al rubber bulb are interchangeably attached to base G. For convenience I term part H a cap, and said part is provided with the passage way z/ in nipple it thereof. Cap H is so niade'as to form chamber J when said cap is attached in operative position on the base` Cr. (See Fig; l.) i
I .is a iieXible tube, usually made of rubber, which is attachable by being drawn over the nipple k on cap II. It is to be understood that. the upper end of tube I is attachable to a liquid receptacle which is-the source of liquid supply to the device when itis .used as a fountain syringe.

To persons skilled in mechanics it is known that when a hollow body having collapsible walls is compressed, the contents of said hollow body, whether liquid or air, are expelled therefrom, and when said walls are returned to their initial position atmospheric pressure produces what is commonly called a suction tending to refill said hollow body. And it is to avoid the said action which causes me to provide the passage way d and also the passage way in nipple b, the operation of the device being as fo-llows: `When used as a fountain syringe liquid flows from the source of supply through the pipe I, passage way 71., chamber J, passage way CZ and passage way cl, flowing from said passage way d around the valve E in what is termed a rotary spray, against the walls of the vagina in which the device is inserted. Said liquid may flow, by gravity, from said vagina into the chamber in cylindrical shell A, filling said chamber, and from said chamber through the passage way in nipple and to waste through pipe C. The liquid in chamber J will come against and close the valve F,
" preventing the flow o-f said liquid through passage way d. `When used as a bulb syringe medicated material may be placed in the porous material which is lettered N in Fig. 2, and the chamber in shell A is filled with the liquid desired to be used; bulb L is compressed, and as compressed a corresponding volume of air is expelled therefrom through stem D. The bulb L is released from compression and the liquid in shell A flows through passage way CZ into said bulb. Additional liquid may, if desired, be poured into the shell A (through restricted end B or through pipe C), beforethe stem D is inserted in the vagina. W'hen stem D is inserted in said vagina the guard K is pressed against the body of the person using the device to prevent the flow of liquid around said guard. The bulb L is compressed and the liquid contained therein is forced therefrom through the passage ways rZ, d, and into said vagina. Upon releasing the bulb it will return to its initial position, and liquid in said shell A will flow through said passage way d, as hereinbefore described, into said bulb. During the last named operation air may flow into said shell A through the passage way in nipple ZJ, and will so flow in suiiicient` quantity to prevent the action hereinbefore termed suction at the restricted opening B in end B of said shell; but the liquid which has been forced through the stem D by the described compression of the bulb L may flow' by gravity through said restricted opening B from said vagina back into said shell A, and the air in said shell will flow out therefrom through said nipple Z2 as said liquid enters said shell.
Repeated compressions and releasings of the bulb L are effected in the use of the device, in the manner above set forth. By this device the flow of liquid from the vagina is at all times eected by gravity, only. Furthermore, as atmospheric pressure exists, at all times, in the receptacle in cylinder A, it occurs that when liquid is forced into the vagina from stem D air contained in said vagina is forced therefrom into said receptacle, entering said receptacle through opening B', and because of said action, in addition to not subjecting` the parts to un due pressure, said liquid is brought into direct contact with the walls of said vagina.
I claim l. The combination of a base, a discharge stem on said base, said base and stem provided with a passage way therethrough, a check valve to said passage way adapted to direct the flow of liquid fro-m said passage way and to prevent the backward flow of liquid thereinto, a cylindrical shell to said base, a restricted opening to said shell concentric to said stem, an outlet from said shell, a source of liquid supply to the inlet side of the passage way in said base, said base provided with an additional passage way therethrough from the inlet side thereof to said shell, and a check valve in said additional passage way adapted to prevent the flow of liquid from said source of supply into said shell and to permit said flow from said shell to said source of supply.
2. The combination of a base, a cylindrical wall on said base arranged to form a receptacle, a restricted end to said wall and an opening through said end adapted to permit the flow of liquid therethrough into said receptacle, a stem to said base, said stem extending through said opening and said base and stem provided with a passage way therethrough, a source of liquid supply to said passage way, means to prevent the iiow of liquid through said passage way toward said source of supply, an additional passage way adapted to permit the iiow of liquid from said receptacle to said source of supply, means to prevent the flow of liquid in the opposite direction through said additional passage way, and an aperture adapted to permit the flow of fluid into and from said receptacle.
3. In a device of the class described, a hollow body reduced at one end, said body being provided with a vent in its walls, a tube secured in said body and projecting from said reduced end, said tube terminating in a nozzle, a check valve in said nozzle, and
a means for forcing fluid through said tube, substantially as described.
4. In a device ofthe class described, a hollow body cylindrical at one end and reduced at the other, there being an opening in said reduced end, a plug inserted in the cylindrical end, a tube secured to the interior of said plug and projecting through said opening, said tube terminating in a nozzle, a check-valve in said nozzle, a passage-way in said plug communicating with said tube, a second passage-way in said plug communicating with the interior of said body, a check-valve in said second passage-way, a bulb connected to said plug and adapted to :torce liquid through said tube and nozzle, and a vent provided in the walls of said body, substantially as described.
5. A device of the class described, comprising a hollow body open at one end, a plug screwed in said body opposite the open end thereof, an axial tube secured to said plug and projecting through said open end, there being an annular opening formed between said tube and said open end, said tube terminating in a nozzle, an automatic checkvalve in said nozzle to prevent the return flow of fluid escaping therefrom, two passage-ways in said plug one communicating with said tube and the other with the interior of said body, a check-valve in the lastnamed passage-way, a bulb coupling screwed to said plug the interior of which is in open communication with said tube and nozzle,
a bulb secured to said coupling, and an air- .Y
vent plug secured in said body, substantially as described.
