Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1917.
Application filed March 16, 1916. Serial No. 84,638.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD S. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in clothes pins.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and cheap device of this character easily manipulated when applying the same to or removing it from the line than with similar devices heretofore.
Another object is to provide a clothes pin which is particularly adapted for use in connection with the pulleylines, so that the lower la of the line will be guided and supported by the handle portion of the clothes pin. Thus the said handle portion serves a double function. 7
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved clothes pin shown in connection with a double or pulley line;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fi 1,- the clothes pin being removed from t e line.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that the clothes pin is made of a suitable length of Wire. This wire is so bent as to provide a pair of approximately parallel members 10 which converge toward each other at one end, as shown at 11, and these endsare twisted as at 12, and this twisted portion bent upwardly and rearwardly in the form of a ring, as clearly shown. The other end of each of the members 10 is connected, by means of a curved portion 13 to a downwardly extending member 1 1. The two members 14 are arranged in approximately parallel relation in advance of the members 10, and are of a length approximately onehalf of the members 10. These members 1A are connected by a transversely extending and outwardly directed curved portion 15. It will be noted that the members 11 are spaced a slightly greater distance apart than the members 10 so that. when the clothes line 16, and the garment 17 draped thereover are engaged between the members 10 and is there will be a tendency to kink the line at two points, that is where each of the members 10 cooperates with the member 14 to grip the line.
The portions of the members 10 below thev use in connection with a double or pulley,
line. In this instance the lower lap of the line is passed through: the twisted ring so thatthe laps will be held in properly spaced positions, and be prevented from twisting.
WVhat is claimed is: I A clothes pin for use in connection with an endless pulley line formed of a single piece of wire and consisting'of a pair-of parallel bars, a second pair of'shorter bars disposed outwardly of and at a greater dis-- tance apart than the first bars, said shorter bars extending into a plane approximately coincident with the plane of the longer bars, 1
whereby a twisting clamping action is produced between thelonger and shorter bars, curved members connecting the longer and shorter bars at one end, a curved member connecting the other ends of the shorter In testimony whereof, I aflix my signahars, the remaining ends of the longer bars ture, in the presence of tWo Witnesses. being twisted and formed into a rearwardly and upwardly extending open ring to pro EDWARD MITCHELL vide a hand grip, said ring also serving to Witnesses:
receive and guide the lower lap of an endless W. B. HARDING, pulley line. G. E. FAIRGHILD.
