Description

J. M. SIMON.
FIGURE TOY.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 27. I916.

WITNESSES ATTO R N EY UNTTE JOHN MAX SIMON, OF YORK, N. Y.
FIGURE TOY.
Application filed September 27, 1916.
To alt whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN Max SIMON, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Figure Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference generally to toys and more particularly relates to wheeled figure toys.
This invention has for its primary aim and object to provide novel means for connecting the supporting means to the body of the figure, the connecting means being placed under tension whereby when actuated the supporting means will consequently move the figure over a surface.
The invention has for an additional object, and one of equal importance as the first mentioned object to provide improved means for actuating the connecting means said means being connected to the supporting means.
Among the other aims and objects of the invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, the number of parts of which are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the eficiency high.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained. and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, I provide the figure I of an animal such as a horse including a body 1. In order to support the body I provide resilient clips 2 secured at their lower edges to the inner surfaces of the sides of the body and adjacent the lower ends thereof. Receivable in the clips is my improved elastic element 3 which may be,

and preferably is, a rubber band. The supporting means consists of a drum 4:, the sides 5 of which constitute wheels and are each provided with oppositely disposed and inwardly extending slots 6 which communicate with longitudinally extending grooves 7 in the intermediate portion of the drum 4. These slots and grooves receive the side portions of the band subsequent to the twisting of these portions about each other adjacent the respective ends thereof as indicated by the numeral 8, to. consequently place the band under tension.
For the purpose of moving the body over a surface I provide my improved actuating means, in the present instance, embodying a string 9 one end of which is secured about the intermediate portion of the drum, the main portion being slidably arranged in an opening 10 in the top of the body. A ball 11 is connected to the outer end of the string and normally rests on the top of the figure or the back of the horse as illustrated in the drawings, the main portion of the string being wound about the drum.
The mode of operation of the invention may be reviewed as follows: Assuming that the device is in the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 and the inner end of the string is wound about the drum, when the ball or knob is engaged and pulled outwardly the string will be unwound and incidentally the band will be placed under tension. The ball is now released and owing to the tension of the elastic band the drum will be rotated to rewind the string and during this movement, the sides 5 of the drum which serve as wheels, being in engagement with the surface will move the figure over the surface.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it can easily be seen that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed upon the market and sold at a minimum cost.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings com- Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A figure toy including a body, a drum the sides of which constitute supporting wheels and provided with oppositely disposed slots, an elastic band connected to the lower sides of the body and receivable in the slots after being twisted, a string wound about the drum and having the free end arranged through an opening in the body, an operating member carried by the free end of the string whereby when the string is pulled outwardly the band will be placed under tension toconsequently rotate the wheels and move the body about a surface when the operating member has been released.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in. presence of two witnesses.
