To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE KYLE, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Wooden Column for Porches, of which the following is'a' specification.

Myinvention consists of a wooden column for a porch, building and other purposes which is formed of an inner core or body and an exterior surface of alternate staves and fillers, means for connecting said fillers and staves to the core and means for closing the joints of the staves and fillers and covering the heads of the connections of the fillers and allowing the members of said exterior surface to expand and contract without affecting the integrity of the surface and consequently of the column.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is tobe understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a column embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same, certain members having been removed. Fig. 3

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a core formed of wood preferably cylindrical in form, and having on its exterior, a surface of staves 2 and fillers 3 alternating with each other and forming the exterior of a column. The staves are constructed of segmental pieces of wood with tapering sides placed in upright position on the core 1. The fillers 3 are constructed of pieces of wood comprising the tongues 4, having tapering sides, and head 5 on the outer ends The heads are extended laterally so as to form the shoulders 6, said fillers being placed in upright position on the core, said tongues occupying position between the staves, said heads extending beyond the outer sides of the staves and said shoulders overlapping the adjacent side portions of the staves.

cured to the core by thenail's-8 which are driven through the former into the latter, thus forming the column with a strong and durable exterior surface. Furthermore, the shoulders 6 overlap the oints of the tongues of t'lrefillers and the staves, and so cover the same, preventing the rain and dirt from entering said oint. Again said shoulders extend over the heads ofth'e nails *7, and-pro tect the same from the weather, and prevent said nails from loosening outwardly.

Sufficient spaces exist between the tongues and the fillers to allow the latter to expand due to the heat of the atmosphere and they can contract due to cold of the atmosphere, but in either case the shoulders 6 retain their overlapping nature over the side portions of the staves so as to cover the joints of the fillers and said staves and extend over the heads of the nails 7 as above referred to. so that the fillers may be driven in toward the core when it is required to tighten the same without crushing in the outer surface of the core.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A column of the character stated, composed of a core extending throughout the len th of the column, and an exterior surface, therefor composed of alternate staves and fillers and means for securing said fillers and staves to said core, said staves and fillers being curved to conform to the curvature of the core and said fillers being composed of tongues which are disposed between adjacent staves and heads on the outer ends of said tongues, said heads being provided with laterally extending shoulders which are adapted to overlap the adjacent side portions of said staves.

A column of the character stated constructed of an inner annular core extending throughout the len th of the column, and a surface on the exterior thereof composed of alternate staves and fillers curved to conform to the curvature of the core, means for securing said fillers and staves separately from each to said core admitting of expansion and contraction of said staves and fillers, said fillers having on their outer ends laterally extending shoulders which are adapted to overlap freely the exteriors of the side portions of said stavcs and the joints of the and fillers abutting each other, said tongues and fillers having tapered sides With spaces between said tapered sides respectivelyto permit expansion, said staves and-fillers be ing curved to conform to the curvature of the core and the core extending continuously throughout the height of the column and said staves and fillers being independently secured thereto atintervals throughout their length.
