ARNO WILLY KRAUSS, DECEASED, LATE 0F SCHWARZENBERG-SACHSENFELD, GER- MANY, BY ALMA PAULA KRAUSS, NEE WOLF, 0F SCI-IWARZENBERG-SACHSENZTELD, GERMANY, HEIRESS, ASSIGNOR TO METALLSTANZWERK G. FT. B. IL, OF SGHIVARZ- ENBERG, GERMANY.
PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING DRAWING-PINS.
Application filed. January 4, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ARNo WILLY KRAUSS, deceased, in his lifetime a resident of Schwarzenberg-Sachsenfeld, Saxony, Germany, and a subject of the King of Saxony and Emperor of Germany, previous to his death had invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Manufacturing Drawing-Pins, of which I, ALMA PAULA KRAuss, ne WOLF, a resident of Schwarzenberg-Sachsenfeld, Saxony, Germany, and a subject of the King of Saxony and Emperor of Germany, administratrix of the estate of the said late ARNO WILLY KRAUss, present the followingfull, clear, and exact specification.
Heretofore drawing pins with sheet metal heads have been made by stamping the point or prong of the drawing pin from a diskshaped head, in such a manner that the point is stamped directly in its final taper shape radially from the center of the head, whereupon the said point or prong is bent off and finally stretched, so as to give it the required length, as the semi-diameter of the head is not large enough for allowing of stamping the prong of proper length at once from the head. Drawing pins, which are made in this manner, however, show the disadvantage, that the points or prongs are weakened by said stretching, and therefore do not possess a sufiiciently great durability.
According to the present invention the point or prong in its stamping out of the head is provided with a thickening, and this thickening is subsequently equalized or settled by stretching without the point or prong itself being thinned or weakened. By such means it is possible to make the point of a length which is greater than the semidiameter of the head disk, and yet give it the necessary strength.
In the following the method, forming the subject matter of the present invention, shall be more particularly described in connection with the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing.
In this drawing Figure 1 is a top view of the head of the drawing pin, showing the hole made by the prong being stamped out from it; Fig. 2 is a side view of the head with the thickened prong stamped out and Specification of Letters Patent.

bent off, and Fig. 3 is a side view of the finished drawing pin.
As will be seen from the drawing, a prong is stamped radially from the center toward the periphery of the head disk at, said prong having close to its free end a thickening 0 (Fig. 2). In the embodiment exemplified in the accompanying drawing this thickening 0 is situated behind the point proper dof the prong or shank b. The hole 6 left in the head disk at, consequently has a corresponding shape (Fig. 1). After the prong Z), with its thickening c has been bent over in the usual manner, the thickening 0 is stretched or drawn out by aid of suitable tools, so that the prong or shank 6 receives the shape and length shown in Fig. 3. The point d remains unchanged in this stretching process. Therefore by disposing the thickening c behind the point proper d of the prong, it is not necessary to form such a point subsequently after stretching by sharpening the prong b. On the other hand, with the exception of the thickened part, the pin is not thinned or weakened, in particular not at the root or inner end close to the head disk. Preferably a shoulder is formed at the beginning of the thickening 0, as shown in Fig. 2, so that an abutment is thereby offered for the tool in the subsequent stretching out of the said thickening, whereby this operation is facilitated.
Having now described the invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. The process of forming from a disk a drawing pin having a prong greater than the radius of the disk, which consists in stamping from said disk a shank with a thickening on its length, then bending off said shank with its thickening from said disk and subsequently removing said thickening of said shank by stretching it out, whereby the shank itself is lengthened.
2. The process of forming from a disk a drawing pin having a prong greater than the radius of the disk, which consists in stamping from said disk a shank with a thickening arranged behind the point proper of said shank, then bending off said shank with its thickening from said disk and subsequently removing said thickening of said shank by stretching it out, whereby the shank itself is lengthened.
3. The process of forming from a disk a drawing pin having a prong greater than the radius of the disk, which consists in stamping from said disk a shank with a thickening on its length, said thickening having a shoulder at its inner end, then bending off said shank with its thickening from said disk, and removing said thickening of the shank by stretching it out.
4:. A drawing pin, comprising a circular disk-like head, having a prong struck out therefrom, a slot-shaped hole in said head and an enlargement in said slot, said prong having a length which is greater than that of said slot left by its being struck out from the head. I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.

cease' Witnesses ALFRED STONE, ROBERT VIER.
