UNIVERSAL DRAWING-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1916.
Application filed May 10, 1915. Serial No. 27,146.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CRAWFORD C. SrN- CLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fredonia, in the county of Wilson, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Universal Drawing-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in drawing boards or the like, and is particularly directed to the provision of such a board having associated therewith means for holding paper in a roll, and positioning it as desired on the face of the board, and having further associated therewith in a permanent manner, a T square and other means for making a drawing.
It is the object of the present invention to combine in a drawing board the above mentioned features and other features to be later brought out in such manner as to provide an efficient and easily operated structure facilitating the making of a drawing.
It is more specifically an object of the invention to provide a T square in connection with the board, and a member on said T square, and adjustable with relation there to to do away with the necessity of using the usual triangles With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts as more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure '1 is a plan view of the improved drawing board. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, looking toward that end to which the T square is attached. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the board. Fig. 4: is a sectional view taken transversely through the board on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken through the paper holding clip, on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 7-7- of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view on the line 88 of Fig. 1. I
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 designates the drawing board proper. Secured on the bottom face of the board is a casing 11 which has its sides flush with the bottom and right hand edges of the board, and spaced inwardly from the other edges thereof, these designations of the board edges being made with respect to the position of the board as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. This caslng serves to provide a securing place for the rolls of paper associated with the board, at the under faces of the said other edges of the board, and the casing also holds drawers 12 which open at the right hand edge of the board, and are adapted'to hold instruments or the like.
Extending from the under face of the upper edge portion of the board are a pair of bracket members 13 and 1 1 respectively, the member 14: being hinged to the board, and reslliently urged to proper position by a suitable spring member 15 to detachably hold in connection with the bracket 13 a shaft 16 carrying a roll of paper 17. The
- top portion of the board is provided with a longitudinal slot 18 through which the paper is passed onto the face of the board. The left hand edge portion of the board is provided with like brackets 19 and 20 respectively which are adapted to carry a roll 21 of tracing paper adapted to extend through a slot 22 in the left hand portion of the board, and lie over the drawing paper. For holding paper down on the face of the board, a spring clip 23 is secured to the lower rig-ht hand corner of the board, and extends diagonally inward, with its free extremity sharpened and bent inwardly at 24 to take the place of the usual thumb tacks. Outwardly of the slots 18 and 22 the adacent portions of the board are provided with substantially parallel grooves 25 in their rear faces which open at the top and right hand edges of the board, and these grooves have their reduced bottom portions opening on the face of the board to provide slots 26, and rotatably positioned in these grooves are scale members 27 hexagonal in cross section, and each provided with an operating finger 28 extending through the ios open end of the groove. The scale members are each so positioned that only one face is graduations on its side .edges. The scale members are held in the grooves by suitable straps 29 or other fastening means.
This T square is alsoprovided with a series of graduations 34. Associated with the T square is a protractor member which may be moved longitudinally on'the' T square, and
thus take the place of'the usual triangles, and which comprises a plate 35 disposed on the T square and provided with an inwardly extending rib 36'engaging the lower edge of the T square. The square isprovided with a longitudinal slot 37, and slidably disposed in this slot is a bolt member 38 which is passed through the plate 35, and has a reduced portion 39 passed through the end of a protractor arm 40, a suitableclamping nut 40. being providedon this reduced portion .to lock the arm against relative pivotal C'movement. The arm is extended past the' sfbolt 39 and pointed at 41, and associated with this pointed endis an arcuate series I of graduations 42 representing'degrees of a 30 circle. .Thus the arm may be adjusted-to any angle desired, .and while held in this adjusted portion may be freely slid along {the T square. I
i In the operation I of the device, readings are taken by the T square from thescale at the left hand portion of the board and by the protractorarm when at right angles to r the T square-from the scale atthe top portion of the board. The protractor arm is alsop-rovided with a series of graduations 7 432" Thus there has been provided a comparatively' simple structure whereby. a
drawing. ma be made in an; exceedingly ready and'e cient manner.. 145'.
It will-he understood that various minor changes andmodifications of structure with in the scope of the appended claims may be being hingedly mounted to provide access for inserting or removing the rolls.
. What is claimed is- 1. In a drawing board, the combination ofv a board proper provided in its under face adjacent the edge portion with a longitudinal groove having its bottom reduced and open to form a slot in the face of the board, a scale member including a plurality of regular faces rotatably mounted in the said groove to selectively expose one of its faces through said slot.'
2. In a drawing-board, the combination of a board proper provided in its upper face portion adjacent its edge with a longitudinal slot, a scale member provided with ;a plurality of scale faces and rotatably U mounted below said slot to selectively expose its faces through the slot when turned,
and'means for yieldably holding the scale member against rotation."
3. In a drawingboard, the combination of "av board-proper provided in its under face fl adjacentits edge portion with a' longitudinal groove'having itsbottom reduced and open to form a slot in the face of the board,
a scale member including a. plurality of scale faces revolubly mounted'in the groove to selectively expose one of its faces through the said slot, and aspring strap yieldingly engaging the scale member to hold thelatter against rotation.
. In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in
the presence of two witnesses.
