To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD ll-IARDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Pumps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to centrifugal pumps of that type wherein a pump head is mounted for rotation within a chamber and tends to draw water to the center of the head from which point it is discharged centrifugally into the chamber.
an object of the present invention is to provide novel means for centering the r0- tating members within the chambers.
Another object is to provide means for centering said chambers within the well casing and for preventing their rotation.
A. further object is to construct a pump head which can be cheaply manufactured yet one which will be extremelyefiicient in operation.
With the above and minor objects in view my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed, as shown in the drawing wherein:
Figure 1 illustrates a central vertical section of a portion of the well casing showing a number of my improved pump heads mounted for rotation in their respective chambers, one of said chambers being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail vertical longitudinal section through a portion of the well casing and the parts contained therein, and, Fig. 4 is a horizontal transverse section on the line 4-4: of Fig. 3. y
In the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a well casing having formed therein a series of openings 2 at each stratum of water in the well, such casing being closed at its upper end by a suit able cap member 3 which is herein shown as having an inclined dischargepipe 4 formed on its outer face.
This discharge or outlet pipe 4 has its up per portion provided with a suitable bearing rounded by a flange 10 adapted to receive therein the upper threaded end of the pipe 11 adapted to convey the water raised from the well to the discharge pipe 4. The free end of ti e pipe 11 is secured in an internally threaded sleeve 12 which is formed integrally with the conical shaped top 13 of the pump head receiving chamber 14, the bottom of this chamber 1a being also provided with an integrally formed internally threaded sleeve 15 depending from its outer face which is adapted to receive one end of an additional pipe 11. This section of pipe 11 has its free end connected in the upper end of an additional casing or chamber similar in all respects to the first mentioned chamber 14. These chambers 14: are disposed at suitable intervals throughout the length of the well casing, their number depending upon the depth of the well. The
lowermost of these casings is preferably disposed beneath the normal level of the water in the well, from which chamber said water is raised by suction to the next chamber and so on up to the top of the well casing. By disposing the lowermost chamber below the normal level of the water, priming of the pump mechanism is not necessary before starting the operation thereof.
This pump mechanism comprises substantially a series of pump heads 16, one of which is disposed in each of said chambers, and which are connected by sections of shafting 17 to one another. The uppermost pump head is connected by the shaft section 6 which passes through the bearing 5 and has its outer end connected with any suitable source of power for rotating said shaft. This rotating means may be either a motor directly connected with said shaft or as shown in Fig. l the end of the shaft may be keyed to a belt pulley 18.

-= The pump head-16 comprises substantially a pair of disk- like members 30 and 31 re- -spective ly, the member 31 having the bearing opening 29 formed therethrough. These members 30 and 31 are slightly concave with 2 their ,outer edges close together and their centers farther apart to provide the cavity 32. In operating my improved centrifugal pump the source of power is connected to the outer end of the shaft 6 for rotating said shaft, which will cause the rotation of all the pump heads connected either directly or; indirectly therewith. Each of these pump heads will rotate in the direction of the arrow, and each will suck the water from the head directly below through the pipe 11 and into the cavity 32 within said pump head, from which thewater will be discharged between the disk- like sections 30 and 31 in the form ofa thin horizontal sheet into the chamber 14. This operation will then be repeated, the water being guided by the inclined upper end of the chamber 14 into the pipe section 11 directly above. By providing a sufficient number ofpump heads with a strong enough shaft connecting them, the water may be raised from very deep wells with comparative ease.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is obvious that I have provided a very simple yet extremely efficient deiiceforcarrying out the objects of the invention.
Although I have described only the eleanents best adapted to perform the functions of the device, it is obvious that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of. construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new is:
v 1. The combination with a well casing, of a pipe disposed within said casing, enlarged chambers formed at intervals in said pipe each of said chambers having a conical shaped top and a flat bottom with an opening therethrough, means for centering said chambers in the casing, a pipe extension projecting within said chamber, a pump head rotatable on said extension in each of said chambers, a shaft connecting said pump heads, and means for rotating said shaft.
2. The combination with a well casing, of chambers disposed at intervals throughout the length of said casing, each of said chambers being formed of upper and lower separable sections, pipe sections connecting the outer ends of said chambers, a pipe extension projecting within each of said chambers, means formed on the lower section of each of said chambers for centering the same, a pump head rotatable on each of said extensions, a shaft connecting said pump heads, and means for rotating said shaft.
3. The combination with a well casing, of chambers disposed at intervals throughout' the length of said casing, each of said chambers being formed in two separable sections, the upper section having a conical shaped top with a threaded sleeve extending from its apex, the lower section having a threaded sleeve depending from its bottom, pipe sections connecting said sleeves, a pipe extension projecting into each of said chambers, means formed in the lower section of each of said chambers for centering the same, a pump head rotatable on each of said extensions, a shaft connecting said pump heads, and means for rotating said shaft.

The combination with a well casing, chambers disposed at intervals throughout the length of said casing, pipe sections connecting the outer ends of said chambers, lugs formed on the outer sides of said chambers adjacent their bottoms, hook-shaped springs secured by their shanks in said lugs, their outwardly bowed portions contacting with the well casing and having their free ends underlying the bottoms of said chambers and contacting therewith, the free end portions of said springs sliding beneath said chambers when the same move toward the well casing, a pump head rotatable in each of said casings, a shaft connecting said pump heads, and means for rotating said shaft.
5. The combination with a well casing, of two piece separable chambers disposed at intervals throughout the length thereof, pipe sections connecting the ends of said chamb'ers, spring means for centering said chambers in said casing, a pipe extension projecting within each of said chambers, a disk shaped pump head. disposed for rotation in each of said chambers, a circular bearing opening in the bottom of each ofsaid heads and adapted to receive said pipe extensions,
a threaded sleeve formed integrally with the top of each of said heads, a shaft connecting said pump heads and having its ends threaded-into said sleeve, and means for rotating said shaft.
