METHOD UF MAKING SHOES APPLICATION man nEc.22,1e15.

WM 14 wow and sole to the point at provide means for clenching human STATES; PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN FRASIEE; or HARRISBURG, l nunsrnvanznixumnon or Maxim: srrgns To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WARREN FRAsInR, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Harrisburg, Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Methods of Making Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boots and shoes particularly to means for securing soles to uppers, i I
An object of this invention'is to provide novel means for increasing the strength and durability of the joint between the uppers and soles of shoes without impairingfgtlie wearing qualities of the sole and without e5:-
posing it to view, the securing means which are relied upon as augmentin or increasing the stability of the means parts togetl1e1:= a
A stiil further" object of this invention is; for attaching a sinpper in whichfthe upper is;
to provide novel means gle sole to the u lasted outward and fastened to an exten-.
tered. v
.sion of thesole.
In carrying out myinvention, means for slitting the edge of the erably at a depth of one fifth of the said slit being near the upper the sole and I provideimeans whereby rivets may be applied which penetrate the upper which it is slit, and
I provide sole, .prefits width,
I furthermore the rivets without appreciably bending the lower portion of the sole with respect to the main portion thereof, it being only necessary to form a clearance in which a relatively thin anvil may travel against which the ends of the rivets abut during the clenching operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
describing the invention in detail, reference will behad to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Fi ure 1 illustrates a view in perspective in the county of erably at a distance of the staples. or joining thel tend only partlally through the sole and they hidden from view,

r of a shoe, the sole and a portionbf the upper to depict the relationbeing shown in section of parts; Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional-view of a fragment of the upper and sole; and
Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional ,view on the line 33 of Fi v i In these drawings 4 denotes the the edges 5 of which are lasted outwar up er, 1304.11
lie on the surface of the sole 6'at its edge;
the said sole being provided with extending inwardlyv from its edge and-preffrom' its upper edge equal to one-fifth of the thickness of the said sole, the said slit being designed for the purpose of receivin which the ends S of stapfes 9 may be forced for the purpose of clenchingthe said ends By reference to'the drawing, it will be apparent that the staples ex are entirely obscured or and it is furthermore apparent that a great percentage of the thickness of the sole may be Worn away before the staples are encounan anvil against After the upper has been secured to the 1' solo in the manner indicated, a welt 10 is applied so as to make the appearance more finished and this welt is preferably secured in place' by stitching 11, which is a well known and common expedient for accomplishing this result.
The fact that means have been provided for stapling a portion of a sole to an upper without materially flexing the said sole makes it apparent that one of the novel features of the invention is theposition of the the upper and lower surfaces of the sole, the advantages of which would be apparent from those skilled in the art since it increases the wear of the sole as stated before the staples are exposed or aflected by coming in contact with'the surenc'ounters when the" faces which the sole shoe is used. I claim:
1. A method'of making shoes including the joining of a sole and anoutwardly last upper comprising inwardly from its where the lower part of the sole will flex and stapling the upper to the sole, clench' the slitting of the sole edge atv a point above ing the staples at the slit of the sole and in securing a welt to the outwardly extending portion of the upper.
2. A method of making shoes including the joining of a, sole and an outwardly lasted upper, comprisingthe slitting of the sole inwardl when shtpart of the sole below the slit will from its edge at a point where 'not flex; stapling the upper to the sole, and
clenching the staples at the slit of the sole. 1 In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiix my. signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
