REEL.
Application filed July 22, 1915.
T 0 all Lo/wm t may concern Be it known that I, CI-IARLns l). Komm, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of the city of Chicago, county ofy Cook, and State of llinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in reels and has for its object thek provision of an improved reel which may be made of cardboard or other sheet material and is readily collapsible.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a reel embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a side view of the same shown partially in section, Fig. 3, a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4, a plan view of a blank forming one of the reel parts, Fig. 5, a perspective view of a modified formof construction, Fig. 6, a transverse section of said modified form of construction, andfFig. 7, a plan view of a blank from which the parts of the reel illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 are formed;
The form of construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive comprises a reel or spool formed of two cylindrical parts each formed from a blank of cardboard or other sheet material. Each of these parts comprises a substantially rectangular strip 8 forming a stem and circular heads 9 at each end of said stem. The heads 9 are separated from the stem 8 along the lines 10 and are bent at right angles to said stem along lines 11 so as to leave notches 12 in said heads adapted to pass over the stem on the other part. These two parts are exactly the same except that the stem on one part is slightly longer than that on the other so that the heads thereon may lit snugly against the outer sides of the heads on the other stem, the stem attached to the outermost heads passing through the notches in the innermost heads as indicated. The stems are provided with registering slots 13 and a locking key 14 of cardboard or similar material is passed through said stems at right angles thereto and is provided with a tang 15 struck up therefrom and adapted to engage Specicaton of Letters Patent.

serial No. 41,300.
against the corresponding side of the corresponding stem to prevent withdrawal of said key as indicated in Fig. 3. Said locking key 14 is also provided at each end at one side with an extension 16 adapted to fit within the notch 12 in the innermost head 9 and abuty closely against the outermost head as indicated in Fig. 2 thus reinforcing the construction and serving as a lock to prevent further passage of the key through the slots 18. A reel thus constructed may be manufactured very economically and is readily collapsible. V
Thev construction illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 is the same as that just described eX- cept that the stems 17 are made very7 much wider than stems 8 and heads 18 are made oblong instead of circular. The locking key 14 is also dispensed with in this construction, the material wound upon the reel serving as a means for holding the parts together.
`While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eect, this is capable of variation and modification `without departing from the spirit of the invention. l, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A reel formed in two parts formed from blanks of sheet material, each of said parts consisting of a stem and a head at each end thereof, said heads being notched to receive the stem on the other part and the heads on one of said stems being positioned to t snugly outside the heads on the other, substantially as described.
2. A reel formed in two parts formed from blanks of sheet material, each of said parts consisting of a stem and a head at each end thereof, said stem being formed in part from said heads producing notches in said heads adapted to pass over the stem of the other part, and said heads being bent at right angles to said stem, the heads on one of said stems being positioned to fit snugly outside the heads on the other, substantially as described.
3. A reel formed in two parts formed from blanks of sheet material, each of said parts consisting of a rectangular stem and a circular head at each end thereof, said stem being formed in part from said heads producing notches in said heads adapted to pass over the stem of the other part, and
said heads adapted to pass over the stem of the other part, and said heads being bent at right angles to said stem, there being registering slots through said stems; and a locking key passed through said slots, substantially as described.
5. A reel formed in two parts formed from blanks of sheet material, each of said parts consisting of a rectangular stem and a circular head at each end thereof, said stem being formed in part from said heads producing notches in said heads adapted to pass over the stem of the other part, and said heads being bent at right angles to said stem, there being registering slots through said stems; and a locking key passed through said slots, substantially as described. f
6. A reel formed in two parts formed from blanks of sheet material, each of said parts consisting of a stem and a head at each end thereof, said stem being formed .inipart from said heads producing notches pass over the stem of the other part, and
said heads being bent at right angles to said stem, there beingl registering slots through said stems; a locking key passed through said' slots; and a lock-ing tang on said key, substantially as described.
8. A reel formed in two parts formed from blanks of sheet material, each of said parts consisting of a stein and a head at each end thereof, said heads being arranged to automatically engage with each other and said stems tohold Vsaid parts together, sub stantially as described. Y f
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing' witnesses.
CHARLES P. KUEHN.
