Be it known that I', RICHARD S. HAYES,
a citizen of the United States ofAmerica,A
residing at Commerce', y in tlhe county of Hunt and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful `Improvements in Bolster-Bearings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
One object of thismvention is the production of a wagon bolster which is so constructed as to be attached to a wagon body, allowing the body to rock when necessary thus providing a device which will ride easily over uneven surfaces.
Another object of this invention gis the production of a pair of plates which fit upon the wagon bolster in such a manner as to prevent their accidental displacement and which are provided with a simple and eilicient means for holding the same in their correct positions for allowing the bolster to easily operate when necessary.
Tith these and other objects in view this invention relates to certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements o-f parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. y
In the accompanying drawing, Figur-e1 is a front elevation of the wagon bolster as constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the sand bolster showing the plate mounted thereon. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the rocking bolster showing the plate mounted thereon.
Referring to the accompanying drawingv by numerals it will be seen that the invention comprises a rocking bolster 1 anda sand bolster 2,. 4This rocking bolster lis provided with an even upper surface 3 which will allow the same to i'it snugly uponthe bottom of a wagon body to which it is secured. The lower surface of this bolster 1 is curved throughout its entire length as shown clearly at et while the upper surface of the sand bolster 2 is curvedto correspond to the shape of the surface 4 of the bolster 1.
The plate 6 which is mounted uponthe sand bolster-2 comprises an elongated body upon which are formed the flanges 7 as clearly shown inl Fig. 3. These flanges are formedupon the side edges of the plate 6 so as to extend in spaced relation whereby the plate is mounted upon the sand. bolster 2, the anges will fit. oversaid bolster in assistingA vin preventing the accidental displacement of the plate 6. The bolts 8 pass horizontally through the bolster 2 so as to pass through the anges 7 retaining'the plate 6 in its correct position upon the upper portions of the sand bolster 2; At the central portion of thisvplate 6 there is formed a circular disk 9v which is constructed so as to divide the groove 10 adjacent its outer periphery, and adjacent this groove 10 there' is constructed an annular extending rib 11 extending to formV the depressed pocket 12 asclearly shown in Fig. 2 and an integral vbushing 13 is formed upon the inner portions of 'the pocket 12 so as to provide the bolt opening 14. This bushing v13 passes through-the vertical opening 15 formed in the sand bolster 2 for the purpose of reducing the wear thereon and thus prolonging the life' of thebolster. l
The plate 16 which is used connection with the rocking bolster 1 is elongated similar to the platel 6 usedin connection with the sand bolster 2. provided with side anges 17 extending in parallel spaced relations so as to fit over the side surfaces of the rocking bolster 1 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 therebyassisting in retaining the plate in its correct position upon the rocking bolster. Horizontal bolts 18 are passed through theiangesl? to the bolster 1 thereby fiXedly mounting the plate upon the bolster. This bolster is provided at its central portion withV a socket 19 communicating with the vertical opening 20 eX- tending therethrough.- The plate 16 is provided at its centralv portion withxa circular cup 21 which fits snugly within the socket 19 as shown clearlyv in Fig. `2 so that when the rocking bolster is-positioned upon the upper portions of the sand bolster 2 it will it upon thecir'cular disk 9 of the plates 6. An integral bushing 22`is formed at the central portion of the cup 21 so as to pass through the vertical opening 20 formed in the rocking bolster 1 for preventing wear upon the inner portions of this opening.
When this device is in use, the plates 6 and 16 are mounted upon the bolsters 2 and 1 respectively and are secured in position by means of the bolts y8 and 18. vAt this time the cup 21 ywill lit upon the circular central portions of the thereby fixedly f disk of the plate 6 so as to allow the opening 1a to register with the opening formed through the bushing 22, whereby a bolt may be passed therethrough. It is not deemed necessary to disclose this bolt in this application inasmuch as any suitable bolt of an ordinary construction may be passed through the bushings 13 and 22. In this manner it will be seen that the bolsters will be held in an assembled position in such a manner as to allow the same to efficiently rotate or pivot as occasion may require. It will be seen by referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 that the plates 6 and 16 conform in contour to the surfaces a and of the bolsters 1 and 2, thereby fitting snugly upon the bolsters throughout their entire length. Consequently the weight of the wagon bottom upon the bolster 1 will be imparted to the bolster 2 by means of the cup 21 and the disk l/Vhen, however, the wagon is passing over uneven surfaces and the body begins to rock, the bolster 1 may rock upon the bolster 2 owing to the fact that the end portions of these two bolsters annularly extend in spaced relation as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This rocking movement, however, is limited by the end portions of the plates 6 and 16 coming into engagement with each other at which time one of the beads 31 of the plate 6 will iit within one of the channels 32 of the plate 16 there byv holding the outer portions of the bolster 2 as the same is rocked. The end portions of the plate are efiiciently held in their correct positionsupon the end portions of the bolsters by means of the vertical bolts 33 passing therethrough as clearly shown in Fig. 2. It is, of course, obvious that the bolt which passes through the bushings 13, 22 and 25 must not be of such a thickness in its diameter as to prevent the bolster 1 from rocking, since the bolsters have curved surfaces on which the plates fitfor the purpose of allowing the bolster to rock and thus take up the jarring action caused by passing over uneven surfaces. By having the countersunk pocket 12 formed in the disk 9, sufficient space is provided for the Y reception of any suitable lubricant whereby, when the bolsters are pivoting the inner portions of the disk 9 and the cup 21 may Vbe lubricated for the purpose of allowing the same to freely pivot upon each other and thus reduce all frictional engagement therebetween, whereby the life of these two elements will be greatly prolonged. The fitting of the cup 21 over the annular rib 11 and into the grooves will relieve the bolt passing through the bushing of practically all of the strain caused by the movement of the wagon inasmuch as the depth of the cup is of sufiicient greatness as to take up the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the draw the wagon body forwardly and at the Y same time are provided with suflicient means for lubricating the same when in operation.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a sand bolster and a rocking bolster, protector plates carried upon said bolsters, the protector plate carried by said sand bolster provided with a circular disk Iintermediate its ends, said disk having an vupstanding central portion, a cup formed upon the central portion of the plate carried by said rocking bolster, said cup being adapted to fit over said disk whereby the rocking bolster will be carried in its correct position above said sand bolster, bushings formed integral upon the central portion of said disk and said cup, said bushings extending through said bolsters so as to be `positioned in alinement with each other whereby a bolt may be passed through said bushings for retaining said rocking bolster against accidental displacement, said plates being adapted to prevent wear upon the inner portions of said bolsters when the device is in operation.
2. ln a device of the class described, the vcombination of a sand bolster and a rocking bolster, plates positioned upon said bolsters and provided with over-hanging flanges fitting upon the side surfaces of said bolsters for holding said plates against accidental displacement, a disk formed integral upon the central portion of the plate carried by said sand bolster, said disk comprising a groove extending to form an upstanding annular rib, said rib terminating in a depressed pocket, a cup formed integral upon the central portion of the plate carried by said rocking bolster, said cup fitting over the disk formed upon the plate of said sand bolster, said pocket being adapted to contain lubricant for efficiently lubricating the inner portions of said disk and cup when the device is in operation, said disk and cup being adapted to retain said bolsters in their correct 'positions when in operation. v
