Description

M. E. APPLEGATE.
sHoE. APPLICATION FILED APR. 12, 1916.
18 gg 7 1 18 MILES E-HPPLEGHTE' MILES EL APPLEGATE, OF SUGARLOAF, PENNSYLVANIA.-
SHOE.
specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
Application filed April 12, 1916. Serial No. 90,734. I I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Mums E. Arrnpca'm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sugarloaf, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in shoes and has particular reference to improvements in soles and heels therefor The principal object of the invention is to provide armoring means for both the heel and sole of a shoe which will permit of the ready application of new soles or heels in lieu of worn ones and which will be so constructed as to serve as a retaining means for the sole and heel so that all other fastenings such as nails, stitching or the like I may be dispensed-with.
-55 of Fig. 3.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a means of the character mentioned which will be so constructed as to not only act as an armoring means for the heels and soles of shoes but which will be pliable or yieldable so as to in no way interfere with the comfort of the wearer and which will also act as 'a supporting means for the arch of the foot.
With the foregoing and other ob ects 1n view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts as will. be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 1s a view of the blank out of which my armoring device for shoes may be formed; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 3 is an elevational sectional viewthereof; Fig. 4 is atransverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a similar view on'the llne 5 preferably formed from sheet metal or Formed upon the outer edge of is applied thereto.
the like which is of a shape corresponding to the shape of the sole of the shoe, the same including a forward portion 6 corresponding to the shape of the portion 2 of the sole and intermediate or arched portion 7 corresponding to the arched portion 3 of the sole and aIheel 8 corresponding in shape to the heel portion 4 of the sole. This band is of any desired Width in plan and the sides thereof are preferably connected by transverse strips 9 adjacent the arched portions 7 thereof so'as to stiffen and reinforce the same at this point. v
Formed upon the outer edges of the forward or sole portion 6 of the band is a downwardly extending flange 10' which is of a height or width in transverse section corresponding to the width of the half sole 2, the same extending aroundthe forward curved portion of the band and terminating at either side at a point adjacent the point of emergence of the arched portion 7 into the forward or sole portion 6.
portion 8 of the band is a downwardly ex tending flange 11 which is of a height or width in transverse section corresponding;
to the height of the heel of theshoe, the
I the heel same extending about the rear curved portion of the band and erminating ateither side thereof at a point adjacent the point of emergence on the arched portion 7 into the heel portion 8 of the band, the forward" or terminal points of the flange being adapted to lie in substantial alin'ement with the forward or substantially straight portion of the heel of the shoe when the device The arched portion of the band 5 has formed upon its outer edges intermediate the flanges 10 and 11 other flanges 12 which extend downwardly therefrom and are relatively narrow in transverse height or width so as to engage with tl'li} outer edges of the arched portion of the so e. v Theflange 10 "is formed upon its lower edg' with an inwardly extending portion 13, which is of any desired width and which extends throughout the length of the flange and being adapted for engagement with the under face of the half sole. The heel flange 11 is provided in a like manner with an inwardly extending portion 14 which extends throughout the length of the flange and'is adapted for engagement with the under face of the heel, the same being relatively narrow in width and in this respect preferably corresponding or substantially corresponding in width to the portion 13.
Formed on the terminal ends of the flange 10 at the forward portion of the band are ears 15 which are provided with openings 16 to receive elements such as tacks or the like whereby the ends of the flange may be secured to the sole. The terminal ends of the flange 11 have hinged thereto as at 17, plates18 which are likewise provided with openings 19 to permit of tacks or other fastening elements being passed therethrough to secure thesame to the heel.
It is well known that the forward portion of a sole of the usual type of boot or shoe is of relatively greater width than the rear portion thereof and therefore in order to provide means whereby a sole maybe readily engaged or disengaged beneath the portion 13, I split or slot the'armor at the point of connection of the flange 10 with the band 5 adjacent the terminal ends of the flange as indicated at 20. This permits the flange 10 at its ends to be readily flexed ,llexing of t outward as will be understood.
My improved attachment isl adapted to be applied at the time the shoe is manufactured and for which purpose the band 5 adjacent its freemargiu is provided with.
the openings 22 through which stitches or other suitable means may. be passed to anchor the device to the shoe, said stitches or other suitable means being also passed through the main sole and heel for maintaining the same in assembled relation. It is to be noted that the band 5 is positionedintermediate the upper of the shoe and the main sole and heel. Now it will be obvious that the half sole may be inserted between the outer sole and the inturned portions 13 of the flange 10 by flexing the flange outwardly at its terminal ends as previously mentioned. After this. sole hasbeen arranged between the outer sole and the inturned portion of the flange, tacks or other securing elements may be then passed through the openings 16 of the portions 15 and engaged with the sole to thus lock the same against accidental removal. The heel may be arranged in a like manner between the heel portion of the outer sole and the inturned portion 14 of the flange 11 and after the space between the inturned portion 15 and the outer sole has been filled.
the plates 18 mav be swung inwardly and tacks or other fastening elements passed through the openings 19 and engaged with the heel. thus serving to lock the same in place in a manner similar to the half sole. It will be ngted that the slits 20 permit of e armoring when the same is in use and thus the shoe is permitted to give,so as to .in noway interfere with the comfort of the wearer. In this connection it will also be noted that the flanges 12, arched portion 5 of the band and the trans verse connecting strips 9 serve as a sup,- porting means for the arch of the foot and effectually prevents falling of the same. After a portion of the heel or half sole has become worn, the fastening elements may be ,removed from the openings 16 or 19 and the plates moved outwardly so as to per mit of the removal of the worn sole or heel and the insertion of a new one in 1ts stead, after which the plates may be again of the same since all wearing portions of the sole and heel are effectually protected. From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation and advantages of the improved shoe will be clearly understood and while I have shown and described certain specific embodiments of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claims may import.
I claim: a v 1; The combination with a shoe, of a band carried thereby, a flange extending from said band for engagement with the heel portion of the shoe, and plates hinged to said flange for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a shoe, of a band carried thereby, a flange extending from said band for engagement with the heel of the shoe, a second flange extending from place.
arranged intermediate the first and secondmentioned flanges for engagement with the arched portion of the shoe.
3. The combination with a shoe, of aband permanently connected thereto, flanges extending from said band, one of said fianges" being adapted for engagement with the heel of the shoe, the other of. said flanges being adapted for engagement with the sole of the shoe, intermediate flanges on the band for engagement with the arched portion of the sole of the shoe, inwardly extending portions on the first and second-mentioned In testimony anges forengagement with the under faces signature in the presence of two witnesses. of the heel and sole of the shoe, and plates hinged to the first named flange adapted MILES APPLEGATE' 5 to overlie the inner face of the heel and Witnesses:
provided with means whereby the same may HARRY Evns, be secured to the heel. PATRICK S. JOHNSON.
