To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN E. WENDEIJ., a citizen of thel United States, and a resident of Gulfport, in the county of Pinellas and State of Florida, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Boxes, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My present invention has particular reference to boxes, containersor receptacles of knock-down or collapsible type, constructed or manufactured from one or more pieces in such proportions, weight, and inish as may be desired, from suitable material, such as card-board, press-board, mill-board, fiberboard, air cell-board, compressed, oiled, or waxed paper, corrugated straw-board with jute or other suitable lining or covering or any iire-proofed, water-proofed, wearproofed, or otherwise treated composition, fabric, or combination of materials which may be suitably adapted, so cut, shaped, creased, plaited, folded, joined, hinged, bound, fastened, or sealed as may be suitably adapted to the structure as hereinafter more full shown and described.
The object of my invention is to embody in a box certain novel features of construction, binding, fastening, and sealing, and to provide a simple, inexpensive, light weight, and durable structure with double-wall protection on all surfaces and reinforced, when folded, by rigid triangular double thick corners showing no raw edges, the corners normally assuming folded positions during the process of erection, rigidly binding the several units in their proper places, and also guarding against collapse of l the structure under external pressure and preventing outward bulging from internal pressure, as well as obstructing the entrance of insects and foreign matter and preventing the leakage of loose contents.
In the accompanying drawings in which my invention is illustrated, and which form a part of this specification-Figure 1 is a perspective View of the box complete and secured. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one step in the construction of the box from the blank with the body thereof almost complete. Fig. 3 is a similar View illustrating the body complete and secured, the box being ready for the reception of its contents. Fig. 4 is another similar view, illustrating the box in the course of completing closure at its top. Fig. 5 is a cross section through the box. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view illustrating the initial folding of the blank t0 form the inside walls of the box body.
Referring` now to these figures, and by a comparison thereof, it will be seen that the body portion includes a double base of which l0 is the outer wall and Vl1 the inner wall, as best seen in Fig. 7; ends on which the inner and outerwalls at one end may be seen at 12 and 13 in Fig. 2, and theinner and outer walls at the opposite end seen at 14 and l5 in Figs. 2 and 7; sides on which the inner and outer walls 16 and 17 at one side appear in Fig. 2, and the inner and outer walls v18 and 19 of the other side appear best in Fig. 7 the outer end walls 13 and 15 being respectively provided with exteriorly projecting cord fasteners 20 and 21, to one of which is secured one end of a flexible fastening member 22 `which may thus be extended around the completed body as shown in Fig.' 3, so as to hold the several -walls rigidly in connection with one another, before the top, to be hereinafter described, is closed, thus holding the body, as seen in the ligure just mentioned, rmly in position ready to receive the contents of suitable nature.
rIhe inner and outer top walls 23 and 24 are continuations or extensions of the outer side' walls 17 and19, the inner top wall 23 as-clearly -seen`in-.Figs.. 2v and 3 being integrally -joined at its ends to the outer end walls 13 and 15 by the triangularly folding corner pieces 25 and 26.
By reference tol Fig. 7 itlwill further be seen that the -outer` bottom wall l0 is connec'ted integrally at ,its ends to the inner end walls 12 and 14 by triangularly folding corner pieces 27 and 28, and by a comparison of this ligure with either of Figs. 3 and 4, it will thus be seen that the top and bottom of the box are reinforced by the folding corner pieces.
By referring again to Figs. 2 and 3, it will be noted that the outer top wall 24 is provided with an exteriorly projecting cord fastener 29 so that when the top walls are folded into the closed position, the flexible securing membery 22 may be extended transversely around the box intermediate its ends as well as longitudinally around the Same and across its ends in order to firmly secure the several parts thereof together, as best seen in Fig. 1.
The blank 30 from which the box is formed, as shown in Fig.V 6, is partly cutl along an intermediate dividing line by cuts 31 and 32 extending in alinement with one another, parallel to the side edges of the blank from its opposite ends, and forming sections 33 and 34 upon opposite sides thereof, which sections are integrally joined at the folding line 35 connecting the inner ends of the cuts 31 and 32 and also alined there with. v
The section 33, it will be noted, has relatively foldable panels forming the outer end walls 13 and 15, the outer side walls 17 and 19, and the inner and outer top walls 23 and 24, in addition to the triangularly folding corner pieces 25 and 26, and is cut transversely at 36 along a line between one end of the outer top wall 24 and the adjacent corner piece 26. On the other hand, the section 34 has panels or sections forming the inner end walls 12 and 14, inner side walls -16 and 18, and the innerand outer bottom walls 10 and 11, in addition to the triangularly folding corner pieces-27 and 28, and is cut along a transverse line 37, in alinement with the transverse out 36 of section 33, to separate one end of its inner. bottom wall from the adjacent corner plece 28. Furthermore the panels at one side of the entire blank are provided with flaps at their outer ends, separated from one another by cuts 38, the flaps of the innerbottom. and side walls of section 34 being respectively indicated at 39 and 40 and the flaps of the outer top and side walls of section 33 being respectively indicated at 41 and 42.
To form the box as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, the blank lis laid flat with its exterior surface down, and in the position shown in Fig. 6 flaps 39 begjig initially turned with the right hand to perpendicular position, followed by a similar movement of the panel 11. The panel 11 is then turned upright upon its inner edge along the inner end wall 14 and is then again turned to the left upon the inner side wall 18. The inner end wall 12 is then turned upright, following which the corner pieces 27 and 28 are folded inwardly and triangularly and the inner bottom wall 11 is turned over fiatwise upon the outer bottom wall 10 in the manner shown in Fig. 7 The bottom portion of the box is ,in this position complete with single end and side walls and double bottom wall, and is then again turned to place theinner side wall 18 iiatwise against the outer side wall 19. The outer end wall 15 is then turned up against the inner end wall 14 and the outer side Wall 17 is turned against the inner side wall 16 to the position shown in Fig. 2, end iiap 42 being turned down against the inner end wall 12 as seen in the same ligure. The outer end wall 13 is then turned up against the inner end wall 12 and the flexible securing member 22 passed around the completed body with its double walls, from the cord fastener 2O to cord fastener 21, or entirely around the .body as shown in Fig. 3, the box being then ready for the reception of suitable contents.
lVhen the box is packed, the corner pieces 25 and 26 are folded inwardly and triangularly with the raising of the inner top wall 23 and the outer top wall 24 is then placed over the inner top wall 23 as seen in Fig. 4, after which the securing member 22 is passed across the top of the finished box to the fastener 29, and from thence'transversely around the box intermediate its ends, and again around the box longitudinally across its ends in the direction at right angles to the direction initially'given to fold the body as in Fig. 3.
In any event, it will be seen that the several panels of the blank when folded as described, become rigid supporting units of a substantial reinforced box structure, susceptible of speedy erection, and Vjust as easily collapsed to a perfectly fiat blank, the area of which may be reduced to half by folding along its longitudinal center in alinement with the cuts 31 and 32 and again to quarter area by a second fold at theJ transverse center, thus affording great economy in storage space and convenience in transportation.

A box including an inner body portion having side and 'end walls and a double bottom, and a cover portion integral with said body portion, said cover portion having side and end walls folded around and outside of said side and end walls of the body portion -and having a double top wall, the double top of the cover portion including oppositely closing walls lapping one another in closed position, the inner top wall and said end walls of the cover portion having triangularly and inwardly outside of said side and end walls of the body portion, and having a double top Wall, said inner body portion having its double Ybottom including lnner and outer bottom Walls of Which the outer bottom Wall and the end Walls have triangularly and inwardly folding corner pieces uniting the same foldable between the-said inner and tions integrally joined between vthe inner ends of the cuts and foldable upon one another along a line co-eXtensive with and joining the inner ends of said cuts, oneof said sections having relatively foldable panels constituting the inner and outer bottom Walls, inner side Walls, and inner end Walls, and the other section having relatively foldablepanels constituting the inner and outer top Walls, outer side Walls, and outer end Walls of a box.
