BUILDING SLAB 0R TILE.
aoaiao.
Application filed February To all whom it may concern Be it known that LLnnor BAUMGARTL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ghicago, in the county ofCookand State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful limprovement in Building Slabs or 'llile, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relatesto improvements in. slabs of concrete, clay, or thelike substances, which are used for forming walls, floors, ceilings, roofsvand the like; and more particularly to slabs of the kind which are provided with cells, or chambers, opening through edges of the slabs, or tile, at which edges they interfit with adjacent slabs, or tile, when positioned for use.
' Asis well understood in the art, the cells, or chambers, are. provided in the slabs, or
' tile, primarily for the purpose of insulating the air at one side of the slabs, or tile, from heat or cold at the opposite side of the slabs, or tile, form a roof-structure and wit is desired to insulate the air in the space beneath the roof against the hot 'or cold air outside of the building; Furthermore, it is desired that the joints between the'slabs', or tile, be;-
sealed not only against passage of air therethrough from one side to the other of the structure formed of the slabs, or tile, but also against entrance of air and moisture from thevexterior of the slabs, ortile, into the cells, or chambers'thereof, and themstructed, considerable difliculty has been experienced in properly sealing the joints between them, a' relatively great 43 ofsqueezing-the material out of trance into these cells, or chambers. of air rom-the inner sidesof the slabs, or tile. As slabs, or tile, have. hitherto been conamount of sealing material is required and objectionable squeezing of the sealing. material through the lower part of the joints results, producing an uneven under surface to the structure and oftentimes littering the floor beneath by the squeezed-out material.
My object is to provide for the proper .sealing of the joints'between slabs, or tile, of the character above set forth, by the use of the minimum amount of sealing material,
and Without the above-referred to objection the joints.
Referring to the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a face. view of-a slab constructed in accordance with. my invention, the central portion thereof being broken away; Fig. 2,
Specification of Letters Patent.
1,,1916. Serial No. 75,527.
an edge View of the slab of Fig. 1, the edge shown being the one through which the cells, or chambers, of the slab open; and Fig. 3, a perspective sectional View of two similar slabs showing the manner ofjoining them together in accordance with my invention, the section being taken at a line, correspond ing to the line 3 of Fig. l and viewed in the direction of the arrow. s
The particular form of slab illustrated, and in which I have chosen to illustrate my invention, is formed with a pluralit'y' of cells, or chambers, indicated at '4',- and separated by partitions 5, these cells opening through an edge of the slab. The opposite edge of the slab is preferably provided with'a flange, or bead, 6, which extends lengthwise thereof throughout the full length of the latter, this bead being located intermediate the upper and lower surfaces of the slab and preferably in line with the cells .4, as represented. The edge of the slab provided with the bead 6 contains a groove, or recess, 7, which extends, by preference, the full length of the slab below the-bead6, and the ends of the partitions 5 and the end-walls 8 ofthe slab. at the opposite edge of thelatter are shaped to ccimform, generally, to the contour of the ea I a In building a structure from the slabs, the latter are interfitted with each other as shown, by way of example, =in Fig. 3,'the
beaded edges of the slabs opposing the edges thereof through which the cells, or chambers, 4, open, in which condition thebeads 6 oppose the concaved ends of the partitions 5 and walls 8, as shown. Preliminary to represented at 10, and squeeze it in oppo- L site directions, as represented, thus producing a highly efi'ective seal against air entering the cells, or chambers, from the lower sides of the slabs. The sealing of the upper portions of the joints between adjacent slabs, above the cells 4, ma) be efl'ected in any desirable manner, as by applying thereto cement as represented at 11.
It will be understood that by constructing slabs, or tile, in accordance'with my invention, a highly effective oint is obtained with Patented ea. eaters.
the use of a relatively small amount of sealing material, and squeezing of the latter through the joints at the under side of the structure is prevented.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A hollow slab or tile open at one edge and provided. with cell-forming partitions the outer ends of Which are eonca-ved,.the said slab or tile being closed at its opposite edge and provided thereat With a convex portion extending along thesame to fit in the said closed edge of the tile being also provided with arecess flanking said convex por-v tion and inset relative thereto to receive sealing material and'into which recess one of the edges of the open end of the tile enters, whereby such open end is sealed.
