To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVlAOK W. MICHAEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Haskell, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Generators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to acetylene generators and has special reference to that type of generator wherein no bell is employed.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified. acetylene generator of the type described wherein the carbid container or receptacle will be elevated clear above the surface of the water contained in the generator when said receptacle is not discharging into the water.
A second object of the invention is to provide such a generator with a float and valve only operable when the carbid receptacle is in lowered position.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a vertical section through the casing of an acetylene generator constructed in accordance with this invention the parts within the casing being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a section at right angles to Fig. 1 but showing all of the parts in section. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a detail section showing the lower part of the carbid receptacle, the float and valve controlling said receptacle.
In carrying out the object of this invention I provide a casing 10 of the usual cylindrical form and this casing has on its top a.
draw off pipe 11 provided with a valve 12, the draw 0E pipe leading to the gas main or to a suitable scrubber or other like device for purifying the acetylene. This casing top is also provided with a filling opening closed by the usual cap 13.
Fixed to the top and side of the casing is a guide rod 14L and slidable on this guide rod is a carbid receptacle 15 which has an opening at its lower part. This opening 16 in the lower part of the carbid receptacle is controlled by means of a conical valve 17 which is provided with a depending stem 18 and on the lower end of this stem is a float 19 so that when the carbid receptacle is in its lowered position the float will rest on the water and open the valve 17. For the purpose of preventing accidental opening of the valve 17 there is provided on the lower end of the receptacle a skeleton casing 20 which forms a guide for the valve stem and at the same time supports the lower end of the spring 21. The upper end of the spring 21 bears against a collar 22 mounted on the valve stem and is secured thereto, the spring being a retractile spring so that by this means the valve is normally seated.
This carbid receptacle 15 is provided on one side with an ear 23 which embraces the guide rod 14: and thus serves to guide the receptacle in a straight line vertically. Furthermore a tension spring 2 1 has its lower end connected to the spring or sleeve 23 and its upper end connected to a hook 25 fixed to the rod 1 1. The purpose of this spring is to counterbalance a portion of the weight of the receptacle 15 and the carbid contents thereof.
Mounted within the casing 10 is an elongated cylinder 26 wherein is reciprocally mounted a piston 27 to which is connected a piston rod 28. This piston rod 28 passes through a packing boX 29 at the upper end of the cylinder 26 and has connected to its outer end the receptacle 15 as indicated at 30. Extending from above the water line and passing out of the casing 10 is a pipe 31 which extends downward on the outside of the casing and again enters the casing to afford communication with the lower end of the cylinder 26.
For the purpose of forcing the piston 27 downward after the same has been raised there beneath there is provided a spring 32 the upper end of which bears against the packing 29 and the lower end bears against the upper surface of said piston 27 In or der to provide means for relieving the pressure of the upper side of the piston 27 when the latter is raised a bleeder 32 extends from the upper part of the cylinder 26 through the side wall of the casing 10.
In the operation of the device the receptacle 15 is charged with carbid through the opening closed by the cap 18. The casing 10 also has water fed there into until a suitable height is reached. The piston 27 will be held downward yieldably by the spring '22 and this will cause the receptacle 15 to move downward until the float 19 rests on the water. When this takes place the spring 32, forcing the receptacle 15 still farther downward, will cause the float to press upward and open the valve 17. lVhen the pressure in the upper part of the casing becomes sufficiently great the piston 27 will rise upward and carry with it the receptacle 15 and the valve and float. This removes the receptacle 15 to a considerable distance above the water and thus prevents any splashing of the water into said receptacle.
There has thus been provided a simple and may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
What is claimed is:

In an acetylene generator, a closed casingradapted to contain water in its lower part, a carbid receptacle mounted in the upper part of the casing for vertical movement therein, a cylinder arranged within the casing and having one end communicating with the upper part thereof, a piston in said cylinder, an operative connection between the piston and receptacle arranged to raise the' receptacle as the pressure increases in the casing and a float valve carried by the receptacle and movable therewith.

In an acetylene generator, a closed casing, a carbid receptacle vertically movable in the casing and having an opening in its bottom, a guide rod mounted in the casing and having the receptacle slidably connected thereto, an upwardly opening valve controlling the opening in the receptacle, a valve stem depending from the valve, a float fixed to the lower end of the stem, a cylinder fixed within said casing, a pipe leading from the upper part of the casing to the lower end of the cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod carried by the piston and having its upper end connected to the receptacle, packing for said rod at the upper end of the cylinder, and a bleeder leading from the upper end of the cylinder and communicating with the atmosphere.
