'WlTFM @TATE JOHN DIEDRICH HEMSO'EH ANI) FREDERCK ADOLPH NIEVINN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BADGE 0R BUTTON.
Application filed June 27, 1912.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
lie it known that we, JOHN D. HnrMsoTr-r and Fnennnion A.. Nimh-inn, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Badges or Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in buttons or badges.
The object of the invention is to provide a button or badge having interchangeable letters or other sign characters and adapted for use asfraternal order buttons, campaign buttons or badges, high school buttons, class buttons, etc.
Another object of the invention is to provide a button of the type above indicated, which may be used at different times for different purposes without the necessity of buying a new button each time it is desired for a different purpose.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combination of parts and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of a button or badge embodying our improvements, the same being shown as applied to a coat lapel. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, upon an enlarged scale, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are side-elevations of two of 'thefmembers composing the button. Fig. 5 is a detail, perspective view of one of the members adapted to be provided with a letter or othersign-character, and Fig. 6 shows our improvements adapted to be attached tothe clothing in the manner of a pin.
In the drawing, 10 denotes the main portion or base plate of the button, the same being in the form of a sector of a circle and provided with an arcuate depressed portion or groove 11 around the outer edge, having an inner shoulder 12, an outer shoulder 13 and end shoulders 14, 14. In this arcuate groove 11 is adapted to be seated a plurality of keystone-shaped, letter or other character carrying members 15, each of said members 15 having its sides formed on radii passing through the center of the arcuate groove or recess 11, and having its outer and inner edges concentric with the outer and inner shoulders 13 and 12, respectively, of the groove. Each of these letter or other Specification of Letters Patent.
- are supplied to the trade in Patented @et 24, 1916. serial No. 706,204.
character carrying members 15, which are relatively short, stili' and preferably made of Celluloid., is provided on one face with a letter or other character, and is left blank onits opposite face, although some members may be provided with letters on both faces, and some of the members left blank on both faces, and due to the shape of these members 15, it will be obvious that the same maybeplaced in the groove 11 either with their letters exposed or with the blank faces turned outwardly. rlhe base plate 10 is so constructed as to carry and retain any number desired of the members 15, that in the drawing being shown as adapted to contain twelve. rFliese letter carrying members 15 quantities, and providedL with all the letters of the alphabet, and as will be obvious, they may be arranged4 and so disposed in the groove 11 as to spell any word, name or group of initials as desired, and these members are each independently removable and reversible when the clamp plate is removed. These letter carrying members 15, after having been properly positioned in the groove 11 are held in place by a suitable cap piece or clamping member 16, the same being of a sector formation, but of smaller radius than the base plate 10, and having a screw 17 soldered or otherwise secured thereto, and adapted to pass thro-ugh a. hole 18 in the member 10 and held in place by means of a lock-nut in the form of a threaded disk 19. The screw 17 may be made long enough so as Ato take through a button hole 2O in a coat lapel, and the button is adapted to be retained in place as by means of a thumb nut 21, the latter being concaved, so that where the screw 17 is passed through a thick piece of wearing apparel, as shown in Fig. 1, the thumb nut will be applied as there shown, but if the coat or other material to which the button is attached is of lesser thickness, the thumb nut will be reversed so as to always have the end of the screw 17 below the plane of the outer surface of the nut.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the one screw 17 cooperates with the disk 19, and the nut 2l in holding the clamping member in position and the button or badge in the button hole.
In order to prevent the button or badge from rotating or Working out of its proper position after the same is applied to the Wearing apparel, the member is provided with a pair of spaced, sharp projections 22, 22, adapted to stick into the cloth. Both of the members 10 and 16 may be formed by stamping, and if desired, the clamp plate 16 may be suitably ornamented or lithographed to represent any object desired, the clamp plate, as shown in the drawing, being provided with a convex center portion 23 and a plurality of rays 2-1 to represent the rising sun. Where it is desired to attach the button to the wearing apparel at other places than through button holes, as for instance, when it is desired to use the button as a suiiragette badge, the button may be provided with a safety pin arrangement 25, as shown in Fig. 5.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the button or badge may be manufactured at relatively small expense and may be used anyV number of times for dierent purposes by merely interchanging th-e letter vcarrying members or by substituting other members 15, having different letters than those already carried by the button.
We claim 1. A button of the character described adapted to be attached to Wearing apparel,
comprising, in combination: a sector-shaped base plate provided With an arcuate groove; a plurality of interchangeable, removable members, at least one of which is provided With a letter or other symbol and all of which are adapted to be seated in said groove;'a clamping plate for retaining said m'embers in position in the groove; and means for attaching the button to wearing apparel, said means including a screw secured to said clamping plate and adapted to pass through a button hole and a nut coperating with the screw, substantially as specified.
2. A button of the character described and adapted to be attached to wearing apparel, comprising a base plate provided with a groove, aA removable character bearing Copies of this patentmay be obtained for member disposed in said groove, said member being lettered or provided with a symbol and being readily interchangeable with other members of like shape, a removable clamping plate, means securing said clamping plate to said base member in position to hold said character bearing member in place, and means on the rear of said base member for securing said button to the wearing apparel` 3. A button of the character described adapted to be attached to wearing apparel comprising, in combination: a base plate having a recess provided with a groove; a removable member provided with a letter or other symbol adapted to be seated in said groove and interchangeable for other members of like shape; a clamp plate for retaining said member in position in the groove; and means for attaching the button to wearing apparel, said means including a screw fixed to said clamp plate and extended through said recess in the base plate and adapted also to pass through a button-hole and a nut cooperating with said screw, substantially as specified.
4. A button of the character described and adapted to be attached to wearing apparel, com'iprising a base plate having a recess provided with a groove, a removable member provided with a letter or other symbol adapted to be seated in said groove and interchangeable for other members of like shape, a clamping plate ior retaining said member in said groove, and means ior attaching the button to wearing apparel, said means including an element iixed to the clamping plate and extending through said recess in the base plate and adapted to cngage the garment of a wearer, substantially as specified.
